Merged Australian Politics / Australian election

Not surprisingly, nearly all the newspapers are asking for a vote for Dutton. No doubt all directed by Rupert.

Hmmm... Not the SMH. They are saying Albo is at "Winx-like" odds on to win.
That is because Rupert does not own it.
Nine's assets include the Nine Network, Nine Radio; major newspaper mastheads such as The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review; digital properties such as nine.com.au, 9Honey, Pedestrian; video-on-demand platform Stan; and a majority investment in real estate web portal Domain Group.

Meanwhile, the polling booth was very quick this morning.

Probably only in the queue for ten minutes.

There's been a fair bit of discussion on local radio suggesting that many people voted early this time around.
(Pre-poll and postal voting).

That can cause some results to be confirmed late, IIRC, because those votes don't get counted on election night, but get picked up in the following weeks.

I don’t believe that’s true. When I voted overseas I asked the AEC person and was told that the votes would be sent to my electorate before voting day.

8.5 million early voters, apparently ~47% of registered voters.
Makes me wonder if all the last minute spruiking has that much effect on Saturday voters.

And that’s the problem about early voting. Technically you can only vote early if there is a reason you can’t vote on election day, but the AEC doesn’t bother to even ask. I would much prefer early voting to be for exceptional cases. It’s not the last minute spruiking that is an issue for me, it’s the last minute ◊◊◊◊ up or revelation. What if Dutton or Albo are found to be funded by Russia/the Mafia/Hamas etc etc?

Democracy achieved! The queue was longer than I'd seen it before - I queued for a little over half an hour (in the sun!) before I got inside. And of course I got my Democracy Sausage afterward.

The Qld electoral commission disagrees, or ignores the technicality as does the AEC.
All voters can vote at an early voting centre before election day.”

The advantage of voting early is that it would not matter if anything happens to you on election day that would stop you from voting, as you already have voted. It should be up to the individual to decide what is best for them and not the AEC. How often does a major scandal happen in the last two weeks of a campaign?

This is what the AEC says on the issue
The result of this is that votes cast on election day are often counted and displayed on the AEC's Tally Room well before pre-poll votes can be reported. If there is a difference in voting behaviour between early voters and election day voters, this could mean that early results appear to favour one candidate, but then swing towards a different candidate later in the evening when pre-poll votes are counted.

We voted a few days early because it was convenient for us to do so. We were not even asked why we needed to. It was the bog-standard usual polling centre spiel when being checked off and given our ballots.

I have just discovered that the ABC election coverage is live on YouTube. I’m due to head off on a walk around Krakow in a couple of hours. I think I’ll have the tour guide’s voice in one ear and the ABC in the other.

Enjoy! Krakow is lovely.

Yes I know this, but technicality it still is. From the AEC:

There is nothing wrong with casting an early vote if your circumstances mean you can't make it to a polling place on election day.
How would I know if I can make it to a polling place on election day? I might have had an accident. So I am eligible to vote early.

Election live. Sorry cannot give you a summary.

Yes, there have been several mentions on the coverage tonight saying that the pre-poll and postals will be counted tonight.

I don't know if this is a new thing, because of the amount of pre-polls or if I've always been wrong about that.

:)

The early swing towards Labor and away from the Coalition is very strong right now, at this time that polls have closed in WA. They're saying that the postal and pre-polls will favour the Coalition, but it's hard to see this being sufficient to counter the country-wide red wave.

Well that used to be the case, but it was based on the assumption that the relative wealthy go on holidays, and they were more likely to vote Liberal. That is certainly not the case now. I would be very surprised if there were any difference in voting patterns.

So Antony Green called his last election and the ABC couldn't even give him a computer that works.

Fun to watch McGrath constantly say "let's wait for the pre-polls" as the results look bleaker and bleaker.

Well it was fun watching Price talk to the ABC. I wonder how well her allegations that the was voter fraud in Lingiari will go down with everyone else.

Current results
ALP: 77
Lib: 33
GRN: 2
Oth: 10
Doubt: 28
Total: 140
This suggests that the ALP already have a majority.

Source: ABC news.
Edit.
Oth: 11
Doubt: 27

What I find equally amazing and pleasing is that a single seat has not been lost by Labor in Victoria. This is despite all the pundits predicting seats would fall en masse because of the Labor state government. Voters are smarter.

I'm just happy that Voldemort Junior has lost his own seat. Pleases me more than the ALP win.

Still no news on Bugles of Bullshit results yet. It was all a tax write-off for Clive, really, so he won't give a flying ◊◊◊◊ about the result.

In the ACT (which is obviously all I care about) Andrew Leigh has retained Fenner, my home, which is fair enough because Labor has never not held Fenner. Alicia Payne holds Canberra because of course she does. And the big upset is the independent Jessie Price probably taking Bean. Oh no, whatever will we do?

ETA And I'm seeing breaking news now that David Pocock has held his Senate seat. Good!

I’ve been following closely (it’s 1.40pm here). TOP has been below One Nation. No impact whatsoever. Hope they lose their deposits.

Out of curiosity, I checked some overseas front pages. The BBC has it as a big front-page story with live coverage.

CNN has it as a front page story, but it's smaller:

Fox News doesn't mention it at all - no surprise there. Checking some European sources, Deutche Welle doesn't have it. In Le Monde it's below the fold. Japan Times doesn't have anything. RT isn't carrying it.

Other side of the globe...? Time differences?
