Assassination of United Healthcare CEO

His shouting and struggling when being brought into the jail reminded me of some movie. Someone wrestling with cops and saying "It doesn't matter -- you're all dead!" I might be thinking of Sarah Connor in T2, but in the back of my mind it's a guy. Michael Biehn? Bruce Willis (12 Monkeys)?

So clearly functional Glock lower assemblies are printable for some time now, with all the metal being available as parts with no checks.
Here is example of 3 years old video:
The materials are even better now, also resin printers are cheaper, and they can produce stronger parts.
Guess that all will be brought to light now. And nothing will be done, or at least nothing sensible. Sensible thing would be to regulate the pressure carrying parts, especially barrel, which can't be made easily. Then you can print all day long, you will never make a (good) gun. But that would be quite major change in gun laws. Never gonna happen, especially not under Trump.
I can see something stupid like tax on 3d printer filament instead ..

Michael Moore:
Filmmaker Named in Luigi Mangione's Manifesto, Reacts to Cryptic Message (Daily Beast, Dec 11, 2024)
“No other industrialized country on Earth so willingly and heartlessly lets a few large corporations literally decide who shall live and who shall die—a decision that is based solely on profit motive,” wrote Moore.
Moore’s post also included a link to a 19-minute clip from his award-winning 2007 documentary SICKO, which exposed the measures health insurers go to profit off Americans while simultaneously denying them care.
That clip, which was posted to Moore’s YouTube on Friday and embedded in his Substack, was given the title: “SICKO Clip: ‘Deny, Defend, Depose.’”

Ex-insurance exec who walked away from 6-figure salty discusses CEO killing (CNN, Dec 11, 2024 - 8:49 min.)
Former health insurance company executive Wendell Potter tells CNN's Sara Sidner why he understands the rage toward health insurance companies amid the killing of UnitedHealthcare's CEO and explains why he walked away from his six-figure salary at Cigna.
In the video, Potter is asked:
- Do you see any changes for the better from back then, about 20 years ago, 2009?
- Sadly, no. In fact, these companies are making even more aggressive use of prior authorization. They are increasing the out-of-pocket obligations year after year. And they just simply are not paying attention to the needs of patients. They are dropping customers as well. We're seeing that, this year, most of these big insurance companies have largely taken over our Medicare program.

Matt Gorman, former Tim Scott presidential campaign senior adviser:
- A lot of CEOs and corporate leaders I talked to are very concerned about security in a new way, where they were, a lot of them were like Brian Thompson a week or two ago, just being a little bit more carefree about it, being willing to walk around without major security presence. That has changed a major way now.

Let me introduce you to the Ender 3! I was wrong, they're down to about $160. As a note, it doesn't really matter much about how intricate it is, it's about how big it is. The larger the thing you want to print, the bigger the printer. Other than that it's all about finding a .stl file for the part you're looking to print and off it goes. I used to print tire stem caps that were little dicks to prank people. They were pretty small.

The software to do it is free (Cura) to run the machine and I'm sure there's a site like thingiverse that even hosts the .stl files for easy download. Hell, spend an extra few bucks for an aftermarket mother board and it'll be next to silent.
My wife hates you. I am going to clutter the house with more stuff

You're doing it all in the name of furthering technology...or something. I strongly suggest 3 things for new 3D printer users.

A Microswiss Direct Drive, a glass plate to print on, and the aftermarket motherboard because that makes the printer silent. It's worth the expense.

3D printers take work and a bit of research and technical savvy. They're intricate little machines but they're a blast once you get them up and running. I used to print all sorts of stuff. Holders for my TV remotes, cable managers, and while I didn't print this, to show the intricate small stuff, here's a motor mount for a tiny plane. They're great toys once you get them dialed in and running right.

I'll stop derailing the thread now. They are a fun hobby though.

Why would you 3d print a silencer ? It's 2 tubes and few washers. You can print spacers to go between the washers, but that's about it. Yes, there are 3d printed silencers. But it's the most complicated way to make one.
If there was something 3D printed on the gun, it could be lower assembly of the Glock, as all the other parts can be bought online. It's plastic with few metal inserts, IMHO doable on the cheapest 3d printer.
But we don't even know if anything was 3D printed. It's one vague claim, similar to the welrod one. Why speculate. It doesn't matter anyway. If he simply bought a Glock, nothing would have really changed.

Because if you 3d print it you can have internal chambering designs that are far more complex and efficient than anything you could build from individual components. They are produced using a metal sintering printer, not a cheap thermal plastic one.

The new M5 Sig 'Spear' the new US army rifle is issued with a 3d suppressor as standard, it uses 3d printed internal components.

There's also this one

Resin printers don't produce stronger parts. They are uv cured epoxy. I use them to produce model kits, it 'was my living for e few years. They are good on detail and resolution but no way are they stronger than an ABS print.

They're great for printing comic statues

Some of of my kits straight off the printer.

I'm a little less clear on that. Andrew Witty was the reigning CEO of UnitedHealth at this thing, and the public face and frequently pictured and quoted speaker. I can't find anything on Thompson being a speaker here at all, either this year or last.

But Witty looks nothing like Thompson, so I doubt it was a case of mistaken identity. I'm starting to think that Maglione worked out that this door was the closest entrance/exit to the conference area inside, and he knew what the Big Fish all looked like, so he took a shot at the first he recognized.

It's not as sexy as the version I've been lobbying, but it fits the facts as we know them.

But how did he know it was Mr. Thompson from behind? Or that he had popped back to his hotel room and was now on his way back precisely at that moment, ready to fire? Could have been any city suit with a stocky frame.

OMG OMG OMG Looks like he made the gun himself - seems to be some kind of high tech bod.

Any particular reason you wrote 'bollocks'? Did you think you knew better than NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny? Perhaps an apology is in order.

Maglione was apparently along side of Thompson when he exited the Marriot, and probably caught a good profile of him. He then had to cross the street and catch up from behind to make the kill.

I very reluctantly am coming around to think this was a good part dumb luck. All Luigi would have to know is that this door was closest to the conference area, and what the different big wigs looked like. I think Luigi really did get lucky, but I'm holding out for the cel phone logs till I will fully accept it. But the needle is swinging harder towards "this nitwit stumbled onto an opportune circumstance".

In fairness, NYPD was totally out in left field about what kind of gun it was from.the start. Their expert opinions need to be taken with a ton of salt nowadays.

Also, it wasn't a high tech bod or custom work. It appears to be low rent borderline junk, which is why it malfunctioned so badly.

Still no reason to use foul language about a direct quote from the NYPD Chief of Detectives. I should think they see literally thousands of different types of weapons throughout their career and training, and know what they are looking at. They also choose their words carefully in statements prepared in advance in their press releases.

ETA: It is possible the gun found on Mangione's person is not the same one used in the murder.

I doubt it was 'dumb luck' as - I know this sounds ironic - Mangione had a principle against hurting 'innocent people'. For example, in his Goodreads review he says Kaczynzki was 'rightly imprisoned' for this type of thing.

He seems to have been tracking Mr. Thompson, and I wonder if he was behind the bomb threat earlier at his home. The guy is a nerd to a meticulous 't'.

Cause he saw him from the front leaving his own hotel and walking towards him.

So it appears Mangione did stalk him and it wasn't just 'dumb luck'. Plus, he had those three ludicrous sloganised bullets ready as if he was in some kind of virtual reality video game.

I don't think there is much of a question that Thompson wasn't his target.

A lot of us kind of use foul language whenever talking about the NYPD. They also thought Luigi was using an exotic assassins gun, when our own members were able to correctly see that it wasn't.

True. Longshot, all things considered, but true.

The hommes was still carrying the tainted fake ID though. My days of thinking him competent are retreating in the rear view mirror.

Right, but I mean dumb luck as in when Thompson happen to stroll across the ambush spot. It is really starting to sound like the plan was incompetent from.beginningbto end, and only by the grace of God and a couple quirks of fate did it actually succeed.

Dunno. Not sure he was focused on Thompson, unless I missed something. Seems like he was after "all y'all insurance guys", to use the American technical term.

Careful, now: your prudery is showing.

There's nothing 'foul' about bollocks, it's a perfectly good English word with a long history of use in the bible, as a nickname for preists, in the title of a somewhat lacklustre record that was legally found to be innocent of obscenity, and as a synonym for nonsense.

ETA - Note how our notoriously prissy auto-censor has no issue with the word: Bollocks. See, nary a diamond to be seen.

Michael Biehn, Terminator?

I'm thinking it was a guy shouting "You're all dead!" or "You're already dead!" while being restrained. But that's pretty close. I may be mis-remembering. I'm pretty sure it's not Sigourney Weaver I'm thinking of.

For what? He didn't use a 3d printed gun, he isn't some kind of tech bod.
He has had a crappy malfunctioning cobbled together Glock. As for the NYPD, they thought he was using some kind of exotic assassins gun based on a Welrod.
It was obviously nothing of the sort, I said that based on my own experience with the claimed weapon and just watching the video.

Depends on the resins. They are resins way stronger than FMA printers. They especially don't suffer inter-layer adhesion problems.

This guy uses it a lot:
The white translucent stuff, that's resin printed, and the screws metal armatures right into it.

Lot of popular support out there for Mangione. Hard to know what to make of all this.

What to make of it is that many Americans are quite happy to celebrate and glorify murder, as long as the victim is someone they don't like.

Nice. Thing like that would land you year in prison around here. You could get a parole for public approval of a violent crime .. but selling shirts, ie. capitalizing on it .. I doubt the judge would be so nice. I'm not even mad.

They are not selling t-shirts, or giving them away with donations, or anything like that. It's just a backgound to mount the slogan on.

Pretty much a formality at this point, but NY has matched fingerprints from the murder to Luigi, and they also matched the gun, which they are still calling 3D printed, along with the silencer.

Seems that the only reason he is in lockup right now is that he gave the Altoona police a fake name. That gave them the right to arrest, which led to the frisking which turned up the illegal gun, and upped the game. If this dude just said his real name, police would have had nothing but "some old guy thinks you look like a partial picture of a crime suspect in another state"....and they couldn't have done much more.
