Assassination of United Healthcare CEO

Well, he was "poof" for the last year or so, I'm reading. Shouldn't be a problem to be "poof" for another, if you're rich. Just trim and lighten the damn eyebrows and frown when you have to interact with people.
Virtually no one was looking for him. Strangers would barely take notice of some white guy in his 20s. Since the murder everyone was looking for him. His image was everywhere. I have been thinking what I would do. If they didn't know my name and only had that image, I could have got on my boat and not be seen by almost anyone for 6 months. But if they know my name, they will almost certainly find the boat and then me.

Photos of the gun are out, with comments it might have been 3D printed. The photo is quite blurry, but it looks like regular Glock, possibly with handle wrap. You can't print the whole Glock, even though you can print some parts, possibly to fix broken gun ?

Lots of bio information in this NBC-New York news article:
Freddie Leatherbury hasn’t spoken to Mangione since they graduated in 2016 from Gilman School in Maryland. He said Mangione was a smart, friendly and athletic student who came from a wealthy family, even by the private school’s standards. “Quite honestly, he had everything going for him,” Leatherbury said. Leatherbury said he was stunned when a friend shared the news of their former classmate’s arrest. “He does not seem like the kind of guy to do this based on everything I’d known about him in high school,” Leatherbury said. Personally, I wouldn't have matched the NY pics to that guy in PA in a million years, except for the brows. Maybe. They looked like two ferrets stapled to his forehead in the NY pics. Nor would I have matched him either to the NJ fake license or the Facebook posts. Unless facial recognition software nailed him.hard, he might have actually gone unrecognized after a couple weeks.

Also, rich guy shoots another rich guy is so much less poignant a narrative.

The dude is currently only charged in PA for forgery and gun violations in their state. NY hasn't formally charged him.with anything.

So we're all seeing this you tube channel thing, right? A YouTube channel popped up with Mangione's handle that was created back in January. It activated right after he was arrested, saying "if you can see this I'm already under arrest".

It had a countdown timer running out, and an "all is in place and will be revealed soon" message, scheduled to be released this evening. You tube suspended the account.

Alright, so the hommes here is filthy rich, right? And the rich don't go to jail like the rest of us, right? So what's the bet on how he gets out of this?

Upper assembly appears to be a Gen 5 Glock slide with it's markings removed - This side of the pistol would show the make, model and caliber engraved on the slide, the reverse side would have the serial number engraved underneath the ejection port. Lower assembly looks like typical 3D printed ◊◊◊◊, likely a contribution as to why the thing ran like ◊◊◊◊.

BBC: Investigators revealed that finding him was a complete surprise, as they did not have his name on a list of suspects before Monday.

Luigi has been formally charged with murder.

He was charged in New York on Monday night with one count of murder, two counts of carrying a loaded firearm, one count of possessing a forged instrument and one count of criminal possession of a weapon.

A ridiculously rich person in Hawaii has reconsidered destroying the lives of many local families by buying up real estate needed by the poor and family businesses because of this. A horrible way to get there, but I bet there will be some silver linings. This is kind of "Zuckerberg learns there's only one way out of Kauai" MK II

Not exactly. What had happened was that one of Princip's co-conspirators had lobbed a bomb at the Archduke's car as planned, but the driver had spotted it and sped up, the bomb detonating under a later car and severely injuring two of its occupants. The convoy sped up as a result and Princip and the others couldn't get off their bombs. The Archduke reached his destination safely, gave his speech and told the Governor of Sarajevo that he wanted to visit the injured at hospital. No provisions were made for this change of plan so when the driver of the car followed the original route, the Governor started shouting at him that he was going the wrong way, he tried to reverse, staller out the car and Princip, who was at the location by happenstance took the chance that fell into his lap.

There was no failback plan other than "get out of Bosnia asap".
Well that's pretty much exactly what I said, except that I said he did hang around there in the hope of being able to get a shot off, which, I believe is what he said when questioned.

clearly, whoever let immigrants from Italy into the country is at fault, and the only thing to do is to deport everyone with a vaguely Italian-sounding name back to where they came from.

No. There was an active conspiracy to publicly assassinate the Archduke going on, and it's not tremendously surprising that they stumbled across one of the would-be murderers while that conspiracy to publicly assassinate was actively going on.

The plot had failed and there were only five assassins left in the whole city. A series of mistakes led the car to stop right in front of Princip. Not on the same street or nearby, but right in front.

What gets me is exact the time and place that the killer set up to kill Thompson. It's not exactly public knowledge.

There was an investors' conference going on in the hotel. Of course it was public knowledge.

But let's assume the killer was aware that the conference was going to take place at this hotel (which is not publicized anywhere, nor was last year's conference).
Really? And how did the investors know about it?

Let's further assume that he knew Thompson would be speaking there (again, not publicized: the Big Kahuna at this thing who appeared in reporting was CEO Andrew Wittty). Great. All that is a given.

Would Andrew Witty not have made an equally good target?

How would the killer have any idea that Thompson would be using this entrance? There are three, and zero reason to choose a perch at this one, unless he had reason to suspect that Thompson would be using it. Not staying at the Hilton, which would make more sense, or even staying at the Plaza or wherever and being driven there, dropped off at the 6th street entrance.

After all the careful planning this guy took to set this up, from the clandestine entrance into NYC a week earlier to the bike set up in the alley to escape, do you seriously propose that it's likely that he just chose one of the three doors with an "lol let's try this one, I'm so random"? Not even getting into diddy-bopping around the neighborhood till he hangs up the phone and bee lines to his ambush spot where he suddenly sits still and waits?

Sure. Totes looks random. Just implausible that he knew damn right well where Thompson would be and when.
He got lucky. Maybe he'd staked out lots of places where he expected UHO executives to appear over the previous year. We'll probably find out soon, since he's been caught.

I'd guess he thought along the lines of "I'm out of the danger zone, and just another anonymous bus rider now", radically underestimating that the entire northeast was actively looking for him.
I wonder if McDonalds old guy tipster had been calling police for days, reporting literally every male under 60 years old he saw, and just got dumb lucky this time? That would fit in the story well.
His photos had been everywhere for several days. There was no way he could have missed it, unless he had been hiding in the woods First-Blood-style and then went straight from the woods to McD.

Two interesting videos:
'Unfathomable': Friend of CEO killing suspect describes him (CNN on YouTube, Dec 10, 2024 - 8:13 min.)
CNN’s Brynn Gingras reports on what we know about CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione. Then, Erin Burnett talks to R.J. Martin, former roommate to Mangione, about what he was like when they knew each other.
The former roommate mentions Luigi Mangione's problem with backpain, which is also mentioned in the other video:
Ben Shapiro's Audience Angrily REVOLTS Against His "Left vs Right" Framing of UHC CEO (The Humanist Report on YouTube, Dec 10, 2024 - 19:08 min.)
Ben Shapiro tried his very best to turn his coverage of the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s hit into an attack on the left, but his audience just wasn’t buying it. In fact, they began to realize in the comment sections of his videos that he’s an out of touch multi-millionaire whose entire business model thrives by getting working class Americans to fight each other at the behest of elites. In this video we’ll discuss the overwhelmingly negative reaction to these videos and talk about Luigi Mangione, the alleged assassin, and how his politics are more ambiguous than people like Shapiro probably expected.
From the latter:
"Something is happening in this country that I did not think was even possible. Americans are waking up and finally becoming class conscious, and the propaganda that once suppressed this awakening for years and kept them in line has failed at a critical point in time.
(...)
He followed liberals like AOC and Trevor Noah on Twitter, but he also followed conservatives like Joe Rogan and Patrick Bet-David. Now, he retweeted right-wing billionaires like Peter Thiel. But, I mean, politics aside, he has a photo of an X-ray in his Twitter banner and apparently had books about backpain in his Goodreads, and reportedly had a lot of medical issues in that regard. And in an Amazon review [of Unabomber Kaczynski's manifesto] that he posted he said that he thought violence was necessary to survive."

One possibility is he had enough money to get investors newsletters, be a member of wealth management websites and other services. So instead of having to dig out where it happened he was invited or was watching people say "am attending exclusive Investors conference at blah blah, follow me for updates".

Who will be left if everyone who had trouble with their health insurance company will be excluded?

It's not just the Left - plenty of MAGAs also "show ill will towards Corporate America", to quote the NYPD.

That's part of the sales pitch, isn't it?

"Look how bad these corporations and billionaires are", said the billionaire investor, "We should do something about that, vote for me".

This may be a comeback for MSNBC:
Joy: Mad at UnitedHealthcare? Voted for Trump? You voted for U.S. to be rund like UnitedHealthcare (MSNBC on YouTube, Dec 10, 2024 - 12:02 min.)
The conversation around health care policies, corporate practices and economic frustrations, across partisan lines, has practically engulfed the actual story of a man brutally murdered outside of a New York City hotel. The controversies plaguing the health insurance industry, and the history behind them, are analyzed on The ReidOut with Joy Reid.
Imagine if the Democrats had run on a program like this instead of on the endorsement from the Cheneys ...

I love it!
"If you watch this and don’t realize that Walsh’s whole purpose is to divide the poor/middle class for the interests of the rich then idk what to tell you"
"The bizzare insistence that its just "the Left" celebrating this CEO getting clipped maskes me think one of two things about you, Matt.
A) You are brutally out of touch.
B) You are mostly just a mouthpiece for corporate interests of the Dailywire that requires tribalization and fighting between everyday normal people."
"You’re entire business model is getting people to hate each other"
"Yeah... Republican pundits don't realize this isn't as politically partisan as they wished it were. We all hate our healthcare system. We may not advocate for murder, but sympathy for CEOs of these organizations is at an all time low, regardless of R or D."
"Matt isn’t “out of touch”. He’s purposefully dividing us so his team can laugh all the way to the bank."
"Guess I’m a leftist now guys"

This could be the beginning of the actual resistance - against the GOP as well as the DNC.

It doesn't matter. Mangione just has to repeat often and loud that Brian Thompson was the CEO of 'Obamacare', and then Trump will pardon him.
Trump still only has "concepts of a plan" and obviously doesn't know or give a **** about healthcare.

I think mental illness played a role in this. I don't mean Mangione should plead insanity but this is not a normal person.

He certainly isn't, he is one of the elite comfortable class, a small minority in the USA but one that controls the USA.

Yes, we all know this, and have for about a century. So what?
There was an investors' conference going on in the hotel. Of course it was public knowledge.
It was not. We discussed this in depth upthread.
Really? And how did the investors know about it?
Because they are on a private internal mailing list. We did this already. Have you not been reading this thread?
Would Andrew Witty not have made an equally good target?
Yes. {ETA: I am wondering more and more about this. Posters have been insisting that Thompson was the intended target, because of the words on the shell casings. But I'm not so sure Witty wasn't the intended target, and Luigi got entirely he wrong guy? I mean, if we are interpreting every event as part of a zany madcap sitcom plot}

I'm sure luck played a part, both good and bad. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a part that seems to have been planned.

He was videoed walking around a block away, talking on a burner phone at 6:30AM. After this call, he goes straight to the ambush spot and waits. For like 5 mins, and the (presumed) target walks right in front of him.

So ok. We know now that family and friends say he had gone "poof" for about a year (I don'rt actually believe this, but it kinda sorta helps to account for why no one IDed him from the circulated pics for a week). So who was he talking to on a freaking burner phone immediately before the ambush? You think he was calling for the current time? Maybe checking the surf report?

They have the phone (presumably), and the call logs will be telling, especially the number he was making/receiving the call he was on. And how often they were in contact and when, etc.

I think he thought the same thing I did: the circulated pics look little like him, so he's actually fairly safe. And he certainly appears to have gotten on yet another bus and traveled around, going in McD's, and no one but a lone elderly dude even recognized him (and like I keep saying, if he had trimmed and lightened his eyebrows, I bet he'd still be walking free. He's a fairly generic looking guy and the circulated pics were awkward perspectives).
