Assassination of United Healthcare CEO

But he wanted the police to find the backpack. I don't think that was a mistake by any means. He left the monopoly money in there and the intent was for them to find it.
Still a mistake if the intent was not to get caught. Which I believe was and is the intent. The problem is Manhattan has the highest density of security cameras than almost anywhere. The combination of the distinctive backpack and cameras being everywhere allowed them to identify him before and after the crime. The only way this guy doesn't get caught is that he disappears.

You don't think it's him?
Yes, it certainly appears so. But even the police say they are just questioning him. Extreme longshot that he is a very average looking guy, carrying a gun in PA (totally normal), with fake ID (unusual but not out of the realm of possibility).

But yeah. it sounds like 95% chance him. It's just so disheartening.

If this mother ◊◊◊◊◊◊ didn't at the very least trim and bleach his distinctive heavy dark eyebrows in the last week, I'm killing him myself.

Seems strange to me he would be chomping a burger in MacDonalds. I mean, expensive Peak Design back pack, $225 windcheater, and he's scoffing a two-dollar cheeseburger...? How was he recognised without his mask, and why still carrying around a rare-ish gun...not to mention fake ID...?

Lets see if the arrested dude looks anything like his AI produced pics.

Maybe he thought the distinctive backpack would be bait for police dispatch? People looking at it are less likely to look at other features. Maybe? You know "Suspect is wearing ...... and a distinctive backpack". Drop the backpack and he's lost a distinguishing characteristic.

Where else was he going? A five star resteraunt? He should have been holed up camping alone for a couple weeks, with supplies loaded before his arrival in NY.
How was he recognised without his mask,
Because his face is still plastered everywhere. Neither of those two AIs look like the actual surveillance pics, IMO. The killer has thick dark eyebrows and a pointy chin.

To shoot his way out of an arrest, maybe. And hope to pass himself off on the few times you need ID.

Looks like this McDonalds worker is going to have a $60,000 nicer Christmas.
The New York Times reports that an “elderly patron” at the McDonald’s is the one that called the police, and that he had “a manifesto” with him critical of the Health Insurance industry. He also was in possession of a “ghost gun”and the same driver’s license that was used to check into the hostel 10 days ago.

Well, I'm glad they caught him. Now maybe they can get back to paying attention to any of the other people murdered. Still not sure why killing a CEO means more than other murders but they figured it out.

Don't you know your worth to society and humanity as a human being is determined by how much money you have.

Thinking about some comments on an apparent mix of skilled and clueless, perhaps that is an indication that he's an amateur. He's watched some NCIS, CSI, Bourne etc and has picked up odd scraps of things to do and not do, some of them wrong, and with some crucial gaps. He drops his water and snack wrapper because he's reminding himself not to screw up by keeping the backpack etc.
Pure speculation.

It's so much worse that he is carrying this stuff with him a week later. I mean, walk into the woods a little and bury it before you go prancing into Mikky D's for your ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ happy meal.

I'm just crushed. Christmas is ruined.

OR... the guy in custody is one of the 'lookalikes' who thought it'd be amusing to have a Karen in McDonalds to report him...?

BREAKING — NY TIMES: "The handwritten manifesto found on the person of the man detained in Altoona criticized health care companies for putting profits above care, according to a senior law enforcement official."

'A handwritten manifesto...?' The guy is either insane or someone desperate for fame.

Perhaps it's not him at all.

That's what had me thinking ex military. I run across a lot of young ex military in construction around here, and they almost always have that weird mix of doing some things sharp, disciplined, and focused, but if they take a step out of their lane and have to get creative, they turn right back into Joe Average and kind of blow it.

I can't hold out hope that he's playing 4-D and this is part of a criminal mastermind ruse. He's just a nitwit that got incredibly lucky.

I mean, average looking guy, carrying a semi in PA, I'm not blinking at. Fake Jersey ID with the same name used in the NY hostel? That's stretching it, unless an online fake ID maker uses the same name and this card is all over the place. Handwritten manifesto? Maybe a copycat goofball?

But no. God doesn't love me that much. It's him, and he is the world's luckiest moron.

I reckon the guy caught with 'fake ID's' and a 'handwritten manifesto' is a simulacrum. Probably a lookalike dude as we saw in the lookalike contest in NY recently.

Reason? Because IMV the perp is surely not going to be caught in a very public hangout like McDonalds (apparently seated, not a takeaway as you might expect with his face covered by a scarf or mask). He could have left his 'manifesto' in the backpack neatly typed out in advance. Presumably, this arrested giy was wearing a similar jacket to the one the perp wore, which is why he was 'recognised' as being the perp's lookalike, it was whom he was aiming to be mistaken for. Fifteen minutes of fame.

Oh, cheer up, it's manifesto time. Those can be fun.

And while I doubt it's going to come even close to the Unabomber, the latest reports point to a former Ivy League student who looks the part, so he should at least be coherent.

If we get to see it that is.

Here's the Facebook of the suspect in custody. It states he attended the University of Pennsylvania and (the last time he updated his profile) lived in Honolulu HI.

Edit: there's a link to a Wordpress blog on that page but unfortnately it has been made private.

I just can't. I thought we were actually getting a proper villain. He doesn't like United Health because granny died, yada yada yada. I'm so sad.

I can only guess that that part is heavy irony, but you're doing a good impersonation of someone who cares deeply about this case.

Once they had his face, this was over. He did a great job of planning his escape from the scene. But didn't understand how many good cameras are in Manhattan. My best friend has been a Seattle police officer for 20 years. He use to say security camera footage bordered on being useless. But not today. They are high definition and cheap so they are everywhere.

I...just...want...a...proper...villain. One that understands what being a ghost means. It ain't that ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ difficult.

OMG OMG OMG Looks like he made the gun himself - seems to be some kind of high tech bod.

The Facebook profile looks like this kid came from money. Interesting that the health insurance crisis would become his hill to die on.

The thing is, if he was good, he'd have had his face everywhere and still gotten away with it. You just need to be 100% ghost when you're committing the crime.

Like, you come up with a perfectly valid reason to be in town. Visiting a campus, whatever. Stroll around big and bold, doing your tourist stuff, right out in the open.

When you do your crime, 100% different clothes, even and especially your shoes. Zero evidence behind. Go back to tourist or whatever stuff. You get cleared as just some guy who was around, for a good reason, and obviously not hiding out.

Well the x-ray of his a spine on his X profile could well be an indicator of motivations.

They say when you plan a crime you account for 3 things and miss dealing with the 4th. He planned the shot and the escape fairly well. But blew everything else. I can see having a backpack that contained other clothing to change into. But the clothing and the backpack should have been ubiquitous. The distinctive backpack led to them connecting the dots on all the security cameras until they found one with his face. The fact is this guy blew it. Unless you're Donald Trump killing someone on a street in Midtown Manhattan is not something you're likely going to get away with.

This pic looks very like the androgynous guy ID-ed by Jennifer Coffindaffer.

I don't know if that post is a joke, but the picture is of Dave Franco -- James Franco's better-looking brother. (Although the actual guy's picture does look a lot like him.) If he's handsome and rich, you-know-who will undoubtedly pardon him.

Right. The backpack, and the jacket. That's what killed him, and also connected him to the hostel, where they recognized the jacket and pack and found pics of his face.

And leaving all the stuff behind, with DNA, that will ironclad the case against him.

Didn't they find the jacket in the backpack? I thought I read that in a post around here.
In it, or near it. I've read both.

More hair and DNA, of course. I just hate this guy.

His exit disguise was virtually identical to his killing look. Again, he stood out and was easy to pick, even though it was a COVID mask. He looked the same with the hood and mask and big ol brows.
