I'm a reasonable republican, and I'm also tired of being blamed (along with other reasonable republicans) for this disastrous election.

There may not be many, but there are some republicans who will gladly throw some big rods into the maga weirdoes wicked gears of destruction. Hell, my fellow vet, John McCain (RIP), threw a big one into the middle of at least one, but I'd like to hear from you folks.

Are there any republicans out there who you think won't make it easy for trump to do his evil deeds done dirt cheap? Besides me, here's an example of at least one other reasonable republican willing to do it:

House Republican who voted to oust Trump over Jan. 6 beats MAGA-endorsed opponent: report

ETA: maga weirdoes need not apply.

My girl, you just started a thread and then resolved it the first four words in. Good job. Can we use it to share cake recipes now?

Seriously, though, probably and hopefully. We'll have to see if they all fall into lockstep like in 2016, or if the resistance continues this time.

You also have to remember what happened with the budget extension before the election. It didn't get out of the house because of some rebellious (albeit reasonable) republicans who wouldn't vote for it.

I really don't think it'll be as smooth sailing as many of the folks here think it'll be.

(Pssssst, I'm not a girl. I'm a he--it's actually in my profile. My username is the name of one of the main characters in my novels, who just happens to be a talking Cat.)

There's a handful of republicans out there who could make outright lunacy difficult to achieve. Hell, even Pence was willing to destroy his career by standing up to the Supreme Leader. But it will be an uphill battle, as the political slaughter of outspoken opponents like Cheney have proven.

If you aren't MAGA, you're a RINO. The End.

Not in my book, and I will once again repost my earlier answer (in two other threads) explaining my beliefs as a reasonable republican.

I have a very, very personal reason for being a republican, and the reason is none of your business, but here are my beliefs:

One thing I will not do is vote for any republican who's an idiot and wants to "own the libs" rather than work together to make government smaller while at the same time protecting or helping as many folks as possible who need it, especially children.

I'm not a fan of abortion, but I'm also not some kind of egotistical male who wants to tell women what they can and can't do by passing stupid laws.

I'm also a fan of pot, so legalize the damn stuff and tax the s**** out of it. The prohibition of alcohol didn't work and neither does it work for weed. Other drugs (like heroin, meth, or fentanyl) are a different story all together.

Sexual orientation is personal and none of it should be outlawed by the government, whether local or federal.

Banning books is stupid.

I don't believe in putting the ten commandments up in classrooms or forcing children to read the bible, especially since the whole beginning of genesis is loaded with a detailed list of incestuous begettings (unless of course, god was able to pull off a secret creation in the next county over), and it's just weird that religious fanatics would consider that a good thing to teach children as part of some kind of lesson in morality. Personally, if you're gonna put up anything, it should be the Golden Rule.

There are many, many things I totally agree with the democrats on, but I will not abandon the republican party just because a bunch of maga weirdoes are trying to ruin it for the rest of us reasonable republicans. My reason why is no one's business but my own.

This is what it means to be a reasonable republican to me.

You can call that being a RINO if you want, but that's your opinion and not a fact, or the damn end.

Oh, I understand that. But in what passes for the Republican party today, if you're not MAGA you're a RINO. There is no room in today's party for reasonable Republicans like you.

I live in the state that elected Mitt Romney to the Senate. Romney spent much of his career building a modern Republican Party, only to see it taken over by extremists. To that point, I live in the state that also elected Mike Lee to the Senate. Lee got into politics because he was a mediocre lawyer (and is now on the short list to be Attorney General).

While I disagree with most of Romney's politics, he remains one of the few high-profile Republican politicians that you can have a conversation with. Sadly he's leaving politics.

If you were reasonable you would not be a republican. The party left reasonableness for lawlessness a long time ago.

I am sure there are a few, including of course those who have made national news for repudiating Trump despite their substantial agreement with most of his supposed policies. One is Vermont's Republican governor, who is a Republican by inclination as well as membership, but who has been popular with both sides as being a fairly reasonable sort, and openly stated he was voting for Harris (as he previously did for Biden). The party itself, of course, hates him.

Though I think the current party's position makes it hard to counter Gulliver Foyle on this, I do not agree. I suspect it of being a lost cause, or one whose goal is at least far distant, but despite my disagreement with most conservative ideas, I do not believe they must include crime, corruption, hatred and imbecility, and I respect those who stubbornly maintain, despite their party leaders' current delusion, that they should not.

I question whether such folks are being realistic, and whether they will live long enough to see the R. party return to sanity before it expels them, or whether the decay of the party has gone so far that the principles they espouse can be even called by that name any more, but I wish them luck.

This just seems like another symptom of America's political dysfunction. In a functional democracy, a political party going this far off the rails would result in a schism, or a mass-migration to another party. Here, people will repudiate Trump, and then still vote for him, or remain in his party, because what else are they going to do? Drink Pepsi? Even relative to the past, it makes no sense. We occasionally saw political parties die and be replaced by new ones, but we've been locked into these two parties for 170 years. These parties don't stand for anything, but elicit insane brand loyalty. We're a million miles away from Reagan Republicans, or New Democrats. We're pretty clearly going through a major political realignment, but still, nothing changes. Presidential elections are still won on razor-thin margins. Congress swings back and forth, but compare that to the New Deal era, where Democrats sometimes won 80% of Congress. It's weird. Everything changes, but nothing changes. It's like a magician pulling a tablecloth out from beneath the place settings.

I'm old, and I probably won't be around to see how this all ends, but I won't ever stop being a reasonable republican, and I'm not referring to you, bruto, but no matter how many jerks stop in to say I'm stupid for not switching, or just simply calling me stupid, or even just a RINO, I will not change, because I have a very, very special personal reason for not being able to do so, and it's not something I can explain or even ignore, but one thing that won't ever change either is that even though I'm one of those hated "republicans," I'd still rather be awake than asleep.

Here's one who sounds reasonable.

A Republican lawyer thought to be in the running to be Donald Trump’s Attorney General has said he wants to drag Democrats’ “dead political bodies” through the streets and “burn” them in a graphic social media post.

Mike Davis, a former Supreme Court clerk and Senate aide, shared the violent post on X on November 6, shortly after Trump surpassed the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

“Here’s my current mood: I want to drag their dead political bodies through the streets, burn them, and throw them off the wall,” Davis said.

“(Legally, politically, and financially, of course),” he added.

“F*** unity... We have the votes. And they tried to kill Trump,” he said in another expletive-laden post, referring to Democrats.
Legally, politically, and financially, of course . . . nudge-nudge, wink-wink.

"This disastrous election"??? So you would have preferred that Kamala Harris won? That hardly seems "reasonable" for anyone who claims to be a Republican.

Hey, that's my opinion, but obviously, you must think a reasonable republican would have to be a maga weirdo, and all I have to add to that is... bwahahahaha.

I think that like too many others here and elsewhere, you are looking at this as a battle of political viewpoints. Those viewpoints were present, but they were not at the fore for many. To some it was also about character, and the integrity of our government itself. It is not reasonable, after all, to support the very embodiment of unreason. Sharing a few of your views does not make a madman sane.

It is unfortunate that Amy Strange, among others, is in the minority who feel that some things, even those desired, come at too high a price.

45 years as a reasonable republican here. Given the reasons I remain in the party in other threads and I've always voted for the candidate not the party. I consider everyone to be just a member of some party in name only. Currently the only way you can vote in the primaries is to belong to that party. If it wasn't the republicans, it would have been the conservatives or some other party that went down the rabbit hole. The democratic party use to be the party that spoke to and for the working class but it seems not so much any more. The republicans use to be for fiscal conservatism but now they seem to be the don't tax but still spend party and it's not like the parties haven't flipped scripts in the past. Heck, as I recall even trump was a democrat at one time.

Anyway the wind blows. But could be said for most politicians.

My thoughts exactly and thank you.

My biggest problem with democrats is all this PC crap. Some of it is ok, but they seem to go overboard with it sometimes.

I was once in this forum that you had to be a democrat or think like a democrat all the time, or you'd be thrown out. They actually didn't mind that I was a reasonable republican as long as I followed the rules, but one time, the discussion got around to how some folks were calling Lindsey Graham, Lady G, and folks got all crazy about it because it "supposedly" defamed gay folks.

Well, I actually did some research and found out there was actually a performer called Lady G, and I got banned from the group after I brought that up.

They also didn't like the term "master," even if it was used in the term "master" bedroom. It was too reminiscent of slavery.

Maybe not, but you'll excuse me if I don't see a silver lining here. I expect the ACA will be repealed without any replacement and likely the only thing that may stop that would be Republicans from Purple districts realizing this isn't a popular move in their area. The Deep Reds will accuse them of disloyalty. But then the whole thing will end up as some 'compromise bill' that utterly neuters the ACA so the purple GOP can say they didn't vote to repeal it. Repeat this scenario with a host of other issues.

Unless one of these Republicans goes true "Maverick" and puts up ads saying they told Trump and MAGA to get stuffed when called to do their usual evil I won't be impressed.

But frankly they are going to act like they have a mandate from God to make everyone who isn't MAGA (and a lot who are) miserable.

No offense, but I think you are an endangered species.

No offense taken, because you're probably right.

Heck, as I recall even trump was a democrat at one time.

Trump is an opportunist. He's changed parties on a whim base on who could give him the most attention and publicity. He changed to Democrat in the 90's because Clinton gave him a little more attention than the dry GOP's Dole and Bushes did. Then he switched to the Reform party hoping to make headway but jumped out as soon as he realized it was Pat Robertson's party. After that he was straight GOP.

Are there any reasonable Republicans? Here's one...

Anybody whose oppenly declared opposition to T****y has only done so because of feuds he started with them or tbeir families. While that does make them better people than the likes of Ted Cruz or Brave Sir RonDa, that still doesn't make them good or reasonable people.

I would say the only difference between the Ray-Gun republicans and the MAGAts is how loudly they're willing to proclaim their racism. Remmber, there is nothing about the modern party that wouldn't comply with Barry Goldwater's Southern Strategy.

The thing is, "PC ****" is basic human decency, nothing else. If you're agai st ordinary levels of decency to your fellow humans, how can you call yourself reasonable?

I tend to agree, but I hope I'm not a racist republican, or is that how you see me?

True, but reality exist even for those who don't believe in it.

-
Yes, a lesson you haven't learnt. The last reasonable republican at any level worth being at is well decomposed by now.

Remaining in the party of T****y at this stage is offering your support to fascism and worse.

True, but I think dems sometimes go overboard on PC, like being against the word "master" just because it might remind someone of slavery?

If there are reasonable alternatives then use them. There are terms used in common conversation back in the 60s for minorities which would simply not be acceptable today and alternatives are used instead.

Of course you can continue to use outmoded language after you have been asked not to.

Of course you can continue to use outmoded language after you have been asked not to.

That's true about not using unacceptable language if you don't have to, or using alternatives when possible, but do you really think making "master" unacceptable (as in, "master" bedroom, or "master's" tour for golf, or stair "master" for example) just because it's linked to slavery? Seems a little overboard to me.

BTW, have you ever read Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, especially the former? The "n" word is used on just about every other page, and I know some high school teachers who won't suggest it as reading material for that reason alone.

I don't like the word myself, but I'm not throwing the books away just because of that. As a matter of fact, Mark Twain himself was an abolitionist.

Look at the movie, Gone with the Wind. Some folks want to ban it just because of it's racial overtones.

IMO, it's just too much sometimes.
