All Hail Taylor Swift, Person of the Year!

If MAGA types get triggered by the immensely talented but generally inoffensive Taylor, I’d like to introduce them to Amyl and the Sniffers.

It's not that's she's the most offensive entertainer out there... I mean there's the lady who wrote the song W.A.P. It's that she is seen as a traitor of sorts, plus she's immensely popular with a demo that the GoP needs, youngish white women. And yet they can't help themselves but to alienate her fans. This could honestly swing the election.

What do I mean on the "traitor" angle. Well she's white, comes from a wealthy family, is ostensibly southern, vaguely christian(?), and started off as a country genre artist. The fact that someone they see as one of them isn't kissing Trumps smelly white ass, troubles them deeply.

Well, I can't speak for young, famous, beautiful billionaires, but it annoys the hell out of me when people assume I'm on "their" side, just because I look like them.

Funnily enough, it seems to happen with the same kind of people who go after her. As in old white people like me.

Fair enough and true enough , but I think she is considered offensive by MAGA types

Okay I know this is in social issues not music etc, but I’ve been trying to think of the biggest musical phenomenon since the Beatles (which will never be bettered) and I believe it’s Taylor.

Amyl & The Sniffers are brilliant! Musically, I rate Any as far superior to Taylor.

As Politico asks, what would happen in MAGA v Taylor Swift's crew?

A fall 2023 survey from the Harvard Institute of Politics found 19 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds said they’d be more likely to vote if they “received a personalized phone call or text message from Taylor Swift encouraging you to vote.”

And polling conducted for Newsweek this week found that 18 percent of voters reported they’d be “more likely” or “significantly more likely” to vote for a Swift-backed candidate.

She's a force of nature. I can't think of any singer ever with the potential political clout of TS. She is capable of turning the election on its head, hence the MAGA fear and loathing.

I'm seriously concerned for her health - some of those types are insane and most of them have guns.

But let's focus on her travel arrangements...

I should add to my last post that there is nothing that Taylor does that is revolutionary (unlike, for example, punk) but what she does is consistently perfect.

Prince? I heard on a radio show that the amount of music he had recorded but not released before he died would provide enough material for dozens of albums. He also liked to travel in private jets. :)

As the parent of a brood of starving artists I can sort of see the point of saying that if Taylor were a true, oh so good and wholesome, artist, she'd not be doing what she does and making millions and flying around in jets and so forth. I like to say that my favorite artistic muse is Vivian Maier, who worked all her life as a nanny, and was discovered only after her death to have been one of the greatest street photographers of the 20th century. But like it or not, Swift is not that. She's an entertainer, and the visible part of a huge and lucrative industry. Sure, she's a talented songwriter and performer, and coincidentally quite easy on the eye, but she works that vein and works it hard.

It's always fun to mock and disparage movie stars who make millions per picture, and sports stars who make incredible amounts of money for tossing a ball around, and so forth, but I think if you look at the industry that surrounds them and the profits that are had because of them, their reward is proportionate. It may be a proportion of something you disapprove of. It may well be that in some utopia nobody would get rich and we'd all be happy amateurs and artists, but we've yet to see that working. Not everyone is at home in the Bread and Puppet Theater. And it may well be (I would agree here) that billionaires and their ilk pay too little in taxes and as a class are over-privileged, but that argument is about what they should do with the fruits of their work, luck, talent or fame, and not the work itself.

Taylor Swift just won a Grammy (Pop Vocal Album).

I'm sure the Kansas City Chiefs are watching from a box seat somewhere in the auditorium.

Surely Michael Jackson or Madonna would be up there.

Try to keep on topic
I'll probably try to tidy up this thread when I get time

I almost already replied... in the USA, she's the biggest solo artist since Michael Jackson. Weather she has topped his popularity, I'm not sure, or what metric to measure them by. There might be a group or two as well... NSYNC were ******* everywhere circa 1998-2002.

While I can't name even one of her songs, I'm pleased she won best pop album. Anything that triggers MAGA morons, especially Kanye, gets two thumbs up!

Might be difficult to compare but I’m pretty sure Michael Jackson has sold more albums than Swift. Of course, comparing sales of vinyl with sales of downloads, especially with a larger market, would seem to favour Swift but even then I think Jackson is out in front.

Michael Jackson has touched many generations in ways that Swift hopefully won’t. Allegedly.

Biggest in what sense?

I'm trying to put a metric on it... not sure which works. Most money made touring (adjusted for inflation)... album sales (well a lot of people don't buy albums anymore)... most #1 singles?.... biggest cultural icon (how the hell do you quantify that?).

Anyways, its is IMO, safe to call her at least the biggest solo artist in the USA since the height of MJ.

To answer two of my questions: MJ has outsold TS by a factor of almost 5 to 1 in album sales (a bit unfair since that counts posthumous but still). TS has had 10 #1 singles, MJ had 13 #1's (does not count The Jackson 5).

Although a large amount of MJs #1s were off 1 album. But he had 7 albums in the top 10, with 5 at number 1. Not counting re-releases, Swift has 10 albums in the top 10, with 8 #1s

And Swift is still going. Expect her next album to hit #1 the first day.

As noted, the metric for "more popular" is hard to come by, but it's clear Swift is right there with MJ or above. And that's just in terms of people listening to songs she sings. I think another aspect that adds to her popularity measure is that she writes her songs. That's something that makes her more Beatles-like and less so Elvis or Michael.

Then again, Swift as only been in the business 20 years, and there is no reason to believe she won't continue to succeed for a long time.

Whether she is going to have the historic legacy of the Beatles is likely doubtful, merely because they were more transformative. But her legacy will still be huge.

MJ wrote many (most?) of his songs.

As a songwriter, he [MJ] penned more than 150 songs, with more than 20 reaching multi-million performance status on American radio and television.

It seems a little unfair to compare TS to Jackson considering that they're in very different parts of their careers. She's likely to have some time to catch up.

It sounds like she's already just about caught up, and if her career lasts as long as his did, she might even lap him at some point.

Remember that Taylor's first album was released in 2006. She's almost twenty years into her career now. Michael Jackson's solo recording career was almost over in twenty years.

Wait, what?

I had to have a quick look at this claim.

It seems that Michael Jackson wrote a lot of his own songs. He is given sole songwriting credit for Beat It, Billie Jean, most of the Bad album, and some of the Dangerous album.

Taylor Swift is credited, according to Wikipedia, as writing or co-writing all of her discography except some cover versions. Well, okay, but it looks like the co-writers did quite a lot of writing.

So I would call that a draw between the two. Elvis, on the other hand, definitely pales in comparison to both on the song-writing front.

I have to say it has been bloody hilarious watching the right absolutely losing their collective minds and descending into full meltdown over Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.

Seriously, a conspiracy to fix the result of next week's Superbowl so that something, something Taylor Swift, something, something Biden endorsement? Really? There are people stupid enough to fall for this sort of crap?

Oh wait... I forgot! We're talking about the rubes in The Fat Orange Turd's base aren't we!? Carry on then!
