When we moved to Xenfora some of the signature options didn't come over. In the old software signatures were limited by a character limit, on Xenfora there are more options and there is a character number and number of lines limit. I've set maximum number of lines to 4 and unlimited characters.

Independent discoveries of the same thing

A post in the Israeli Jar thread got me thinking. What discoveries do we know of that were discovered by more than one society (or person) in more than one place? Pyramid structures. Use of hallucinogenic drugs (as per the interesting post by @grunion ). Beer/alcohol. What else? And have you...

    History Possibly Lost.

Was a Letter from Thomas and Abraham Lincoln lost because of a flawed expert opinion? At my last Family reunion I saw my Great Great Great Grandfather's Bible, and a letter that was supposed to be from Thomas Lincoln too him, this was in 1987-1988. It was written on back of a Map Drawn by...

Historical figures recently read about you find fascinating

Quite busy reading about Leon Battista Alberti whom I've never known of before and finding his life and accomplishments inspirational at my ripe old age. Considering how long ago he lived it is understood why it took me this long to find out about the man. Too new to me to who he was to say...

    The New Nostradamus...Psychohistory?

The History channel was running a show yesterday called The New Nostradamus, profiling mathemetician/social scientist Bruce Bueno de Mesquita, who has a computer program/model that can reputedly make accurate predictions about various human affairs and conflicts. Alas, I did not get to watch...

    Marianas Trench Dive Faked!!!

Forget the Moon Landings, everyone knows they were faked. What people don't know and should know is that an even more important and rare first was achieved over nine years earlier within the bathyscaphe Trieste. Don Walsh was a deep cover CIA operative that had covertly infiltrated the US...

How are aspects of American History taught outside America?

Specifically I'm wondering how things like the American War of Independence or Civil War are taught outside of America. Now the War of Independence did involve a lot of countries so I'd imagine it'd have to be covered to some degree but I'm curious as to how extensively it's covered and what the...

    William Wilberforce?

I can understand the uproar over Churchill, Hitler, Gandhi, and others being cut from school curriculum, but is there a reason Wilberforce shouldn't be taught? I realize he's not as historically significant as the others, but Randi's commentary left me with the suspicion that Wilberforce was...

Wackiest Religious Claim I've heard, "Romans invented Christianity"

I heard about this ten years ago. http://www.angelfire.com/biz5/piso/ Quick summary, the Roman Piso family wrote the Gospels. It is hard to sum it up, but it is an extensive theory that goes into great detail of the hows and whys. In my experience, the author gets hammered by just about...

Do you want to live back then?

Inspired from discussion on "The Dark Ages are coming back fast… " , would one ever want to live 'back then', where 'back then' is any time in the past? Who'd want to forsake all the improvements that we know have occured since that time in the past? Or, would you forsake the known...

    UFO's in history?

Some of these programs depicting UFO's in ancient paintings and ancient texts do seem a little interesting. Why was there such an interest in those periods, some more than others. I am watching a show that "heaven" in the bible simply means sky and that god "could" have been an alien. I...

History of the Bible / Council of Nicea

I'm debating the Bible with a Christian on another forum. He claimed the bible (New Testament) was true, because it was written by eye witnesses. I then made the claim that the Bible as we know it today was put together by the Council of Nicea, and that many books didn't make it into the book...

History made easy - the George MacDonald Fraser way...........

I've been re-reading a couple of George MacDonald Fraser's excellent "Flashman" novels. Start with the fine upstanding character of Brigadier-General Sir Harry Paget Flashman, V.C., K.C.B., K.C.I.E., Chevalier, Legion of Honour, U.S. Medal of Honour, etc., etc. Flashman is a professional...

What part of history would you pay to preserve?

An issue very dear to me: The preservation of history. Our history. Mine, yours, ours. It tells us who we are, where we come from. And, possibly, where we are going. Stonehenge. The Pyramids of Egypt. Angkor Wat. The Colosseum. Sure, a doozy. Big tourist attractions. A quick-and-dirty way of...

    Pope Benedict Needs History Lessons

I just read an article in Newsweek August 15, 2005 on the pope's first address as pope. He claimed the Nazis were athiest and it was the lack of religion that caused the entire movement. Is he ignorant or is he lying?
