Calorie restriction can help you live longer

One of those things one reads about. One of those things that promise a lot but are probably bull? Except not, in this case: not bull, fact. Calorie restriction, intentionally starving the body, does help you live longer. An informative post* in another thread set me thinking that this is...

Mom blames healthcare system after her son went blind from diet comprised of french fries and Pringles https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/mom-blames-healthcare-system-her-204000918.html Surprising to see this in a developed country. If the doctor knew the kid was not eating right, then perhaps a...

Mom Blames Healthcare System For Son's Poor Diet

Mom blames healthcare system after her son went blind from diet comprised of french fries and Pringles Of course if you are going to feed your children crap, just make sure they get plenty of vitamins.. I see it as a simple case of child abuse..

    Jordan Peterson's all-meat diet

You guys know about Jordan Peterson, right? For anyone who hasn't heard of him, he's a Canadian psychologist and a professor. He's also a bit of a "self-help guru" if I can use that term. He recently wrote a best-selling book called 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, and he has a popular...

Question: weight loss and Fruit consumption in day

I have a question for those with a background in medicine and/or nutrition.... A friend of mine is trying to loose weight. They have a relative that is a Nutritionist or dietitian (not sure which one, but it was something they had to train for, although I'm not sure what sort of accreditation...

    Are some diets “mass murder”?

From the department of "No, don't hold back... tell us what you *really* think." BMJ: [Are some diets “mass murder”?] Excerpt: Blutoskitorial: It's an editorial by Richard Smith, who was actually editor of the BMJ for years and IMO highly esteemed. I also think he may be regrettably...

    Criticize My Diet Plan

One of my goals for this year is to lose weight. I finally got around to writing up a clear and concise diet plan, and would appreciate any input that might help improve it. If someone can think of a better name for it than the one I came up with, maybe it could become the next popular...

    Good nutrition over 40

I run, walk, and work out with dumbbells. I do situps, pushups, crunches, etc. I have little body fat, but of course what I have gets distributed evenly to my belly these days. It might be a losing battle but I will win or die trying. My biggest problem is sensible nutrition; I don't eat well...

Is Hunger Calorie or Volume Determined?

I know early settlers seemed to resort to eating all sorts of inedible things due to their starvation, which would support physical and not metabolic satiation. That is an extreme case, but the idea could translate to the opposite condition of surplus. That is, eating high volume, low calorie...

All Red Meat is Bad for You

http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-red-meat-20120313,0,565423.story This is very interesting and telling to me. Not just as a vegetarian. Hell, I'm an alcoholic who loves cheese, so I can't be holier-than-thou. I just find this interesting. I'm usually pretty skeptical about nutrition science...

Harvard Declares Dairy Not Part of a Healthy Diet

I came across this article today which states that the Harvard School of Public Health has declared that dairy is not part of a healthy diet. Intrigued, I went to Harvard's site and the article appears to be giving an accurate assessment. I have heard that dairy isn't healthy for you in...

    Sugar is Toxic?

So I'm having lunch with my co-workers today and one of them starts talking about how she has gone three months without sugar. The natural questions ensue, "oh, is it a diet", etc. She tells us no. She has been off of sugar because "sugar is a toxin" and an "inflamatory". Her doctor has...

"Fat Head" v. "Super Size Me": the great nutrition conspiracy

Last night I got around to watching the film Fat Head which is a tongue-in-cheek response to the Morgan Spurlock documentary Super Size Me. For those who don't remember: in "Super Size Me" Spurlock ate nothing but McDonalds for 30 days, gained weight, experienced other health issues, blames fast...

    Vegetarianism

Have any of you run into people who call themselves vegetarian but eat fish and/or chicken. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarian) has definitions for these variations I had a neighbor who was a Jain and she said if it had a face she didn't eat it. That seems to me to be a...

    Calorie Restriction & Longevity

So it looks like you can make some animals live significantly longer and also more healthily by having them eat a good deal less than a test animal fed an ordinary diet. While this has been demonstrated to work in rodents, fish, and dogs, tests in primates are still ongoing, so scientists are...

high fructose corn syrup vs "natural" sweet

There may be another thread in this subforum on this topic; but I cannot find it. There is an excellent article http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=6501 that compares high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to a large number of "natural" sweeteners. Most such articles only point-out that HFCS is...

The dreaded cellulite fat (cottage cheese) that appears upon the hips, thighs, tummy...well, just about everywhere. I've looked (googled) around about this fat - what is it, how to get rid of it - so many conflicting opinions/suggestions. Rub it off, diet it off, exercise it off, apply...

Some dweeb nobody knows whines about food in America

Story America has a "food system"? We have health classes, cooking shows, and gymnasiums. Lots and lots of them. I'm sure the vast overwhelming majority of them can. And in any case, what's that going to accomplish? In home economics, I learned how to make low mein from scratch, and...

Vegetarian: Arguments For and Against Vegetarianism

Vegetarianism is the practice of following a diet based on plant-based foods including fruits, vegetables, cereal grains, nuts, and seeds, with or without dairy products and eggs. The Dangers of High-Fructose Corn Syrup

I became intrigued by this due to some TV Ads I recently saw put out by some Corn Growers associations attempting to debunk the percieved dangers of High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). Thier argument is that it has no artificial sweetners and in moderation is no more dangerous than sugar. I...
