When we moved to Xenfora some of the signature options didn't come over. In the old software signatures were limited by a character limit, on Xenfora there are more options and there is a character number and number of lines limit. I've set maximum number of lines to 4 and unlimited characters.

Should I just assume TikTok will steal all my data?

I more or less accidentally downloaded TikTok, but I don't think I made an account. I am suspicious of the Chinese state which is per my understanding the owner of TikTok. What better way of surveilling the US public than to get them all using a mobile app to look at funny cat videos or...

The cloud, iPhones and backing up data

First of all, if I am not a complete idiot will I be able to transfer the data from my iPhone 5 to my iPhone 8? A brief check online recommended I start by backing everything from the iPhone to the cloud. Although the articles I found didn't really deal with the iPhone 5, I did find tutorials...

    Is Stephen Hawkins paranoid?

Playing with a Raspberry Pi 2

Currently futzing around with a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. I'd messed around a bit with the original Raspberry Pi, though not too seriously. I'm currently posting using it. The stock web browser, Epiphany, isn't too bad. Major improvements include a quad-core processor and a gig of RAM. I also...

Question regarding internet and the mind/body problem...

Another question from Ghost in the Shell :) In a discussion between the Tachikomas, one suggests that the internet loosely forms a consciousness. Another notes the implications this would entail with regard to the mind/body problem; that the internet itself is growing "mind" generated by humans...

I'm playing with Win 7, and it's not all bad

I put together a completely new computer this weekend and dropped an OEM version of Windows 7 on it. I'd considered buying a pre-built system with Win 7 already installed, but decided it was better to start from scratch. It's hard to make physical upgrades on custom cases like from HP or Dell...

XP Newtork Setup Wizard - what settings does it change? Or: Switching to Wireless.

Is anyone here familiar enough with the bowels of XP to know what settings the Network Setup Wizard changes? Quantum computers are going to be built soon. The moore's law will come to a end soon, and be replaced by quantu computers. However, these will never be able to think like humans. How would they play chess? tactically, they are really good. However in a static game computers could beat humans...

computer will be able to know what you are thinking

I posted this in Science and technology but I thought I'd post it here also because of what it may imply about the brain and mind. http://www.cmu.edu/news/archive/2008/January/jan3_justmitchell.shtml According to the article, researchers at Carnegie Melon have developed a program that can...

    MacWorld Expo 2008

So what's everyone's prediction for MacWorld Expo 2008, which takes place in the middle of January, and is anyone excited about it? As far as I can see, we should expect the following: 1: A sub-notebook which uses flash memory instead of a HDD. 2: A new model of the iPhone, with 3G and a few...

I messed up and now have a question about mail

I don't know what I was thinking. I went looking for 'best dentists' and found this DrOogle site with a lot of recommendations posted. I found a dentist I wanted to try but made the mistake of thinking the "get your appointment by email" was just that. After I stupidly put in my name, phone...

    Old Computers

In the Mac vs PC thread the usable life of a desktop computer came up and I was wondering who out there is still using some old hardware to do work for you. Question about Dell computers

I know the Dell line of systems is a good, but I've heard that the parts they use are specific to Dell. For example, they may have a name brand MB from say ASUS, but it is slightly different. This leads me to believe that it is harder to upgrade Dell computers with off the shelf components...

    Inexpensive computers: anyone else amazed

....esp. you "old timers?" It's hard to spend much more than a grand on a PC now even if you try; heck used to be the cheapest thing available was at least $1200-1500, and you could easily go $3-4K +. The other day I saw a PC for sale in I think a Circuit City ad; it was a Compaq with specs...

Can someone help me with my computer's clock

The time is always about 10 minutes ahead. Every time I try to change it to correct time, the time changes back about a second or two later. I'm guessing it updates the time from somewhere, but I don't know why it's doing that, it never has before.
