Continuation Part Seven: Discussion of the Amanda Knox/Raffaele Sollecito case

I've had CNN on all day. I was watching when they broke the news. I figured Amanda Knox would dominate for the rest of the day. Then.....nothing. They went back to interviewing some guy about the ice storm in Atlanta. I don't think they've mentioned it since (although I have left the room a few times). I know the CTers will find this hard to accept, but the vast majority of people just don't care.

Coverage in the UK has been fairly sympathetic to Amanda and included a powerful interview of Amanda talking about her interrogation

I think you're right though, people are bored of the whole soap opera surrounding the case, which is a tragedy for justice.

A simple murder could have been solved six years ago when the overwhelming evidence against Rudy Guede was found - and the Kercher family would at least have been spared some degree of this whole hellish nightmare and might possibly have found some closure.

Meredith Kercher would have been ashamed by what has been done in her name - and would be ashamed of those that persecute innocent people in her name

You're kidding right? There has only been about a dozen prime time specials in the US about Amanda Knox. Not to mention probably at least a hundred thousand articles minimum written about this case.

You'd have to be living under a rock in the US not to have at least some understanding of this case.

The vast majority of people do not live in the US. Outside Europe and north America, I doubt the case is at all well known.

interview with Amanda Knox

In a funny kind of way this interview with The Guardian (portions of which were shown on BBC2's Newsnight) cheered me up a bit. Maybe she will get some traction in stating her case to the U.S. authorities.

I am not reading the PGP sites but I bet they are hoping Raffaele will somehow turn on Amanda. It will indeed be interesting how the Rafaelle /Amanda dynamic will play out.

The prosecution CT involves Amanda and Raffaele hooking up with known knife carrying burglar and drug dealer Rudy Guede..

You mean, knife carrying, druggie Raffaele Sollecito hooking up with knife carrying drug dealer Rudy Guede?

Sounds like a perfect match.

Amanda is at home and Raffaele is free for the time being. Yay Hellmann and Zanetti.

This case really is much like the JFK case. If one looks at the evidence, it is abundantly clear each was committed by a lone killer. To include others requires manufacturing facts and evidence. Both are simple, straightforward cases, easily solved because each has a mountain of evidence against the actual killers, Guede and Oswald.

<snip>Of course today's verdict makes no difference. JFK nutters, 9/11 nutters, Pan-Am 103 nutters, Moon landing nutters, etc all still believe they are right. No amount of evidence will ever convince them otherwise.

Oh, NOW I see where you're coming from! You are preoccupied with the urgent issues of the day -- the ideas great modern thinkers obsess about. No wonder you are so loyal to your position -- you are doing important work, protecting the rest of us from the real menaces to society.

I will sleep well tonight knowing you are on the job.

Sounds like a perfect match.

Except of course there is not one shred of evidence they ever hooked up. No phone record, no closed circuit camera, no testimony, no physical evidence that has ever placed them in each other's company.

But, no big deal, right?

toto, for some reason I couldn't respond to your post, but I recall the 9/11 truther was an honorary head of the ISC, not an actual member.

Technically speaking, there is no evidence Rudy Guede carried a knife. I'm not sure there is even any evidence he dealt drugs. But you knew that, didn't you?

Really? I thought there was a video of her doing it?

full disclosure: I know virtually nothing about this case, but if the central scrutinzer is for it, I'm agin it!

No, we'd dearly like to see footage of that night in the Questura! That will never come to light, unfortunately.

She was doing yoga as when they got there at 10:15 PM she'd been with police 44.5 of the previous 82 hours and wasn't sleeping well. A young policeman named Raffo or somesuch asked her to do the splits.

However two years later, for the very first time the police all called it a 'cartwheel' and kept saying it over and over, in court and out, the day they testified on what happened at the interrogation. These are the same police who claimed they had 'clear cut' CCTV coverage of her entering the cottage the night of the murder, bleach receipts from the day after the murder and released to the press a picture of what appeared to be a blood soaked bathroom (it was the chemicals they were using instead) that made Amanda taking a shower in it sound macabre. Those were all lies too, and just a few instances of many.

Incidentally some of her 'fans' online created a crude cartoon mocking her doing cartwheels, perhaps you came across that or something.

Should be simple for you to put it together in a theory of the crime that works with the known evidence then. I have yet to see one that stands up to scrutiny from anyone on the side of guilt. Let's see yours.

Yes, one of the judges on Italy's Supreme Court.

I think The Central Scrutinizer has some scrutinizing to do. Maybe he can also tell us why there is nothing nutty about arresting scientists for failing to predict earthquakes.

The vast majority of people do not live in the US. Outside Europe and north America, I doubt the case is at all well known.

Ok, fine, but those people don't care either way .

I'll just say, the vast majority in the US, Canada and Europe.

That'll do.

I don't think he has followed the thread for some time. If he had he would be aware that the big CT's lately have come from the pro guilt side, particularly the one about Hellmann taking a bribe to find them innocent, a bribe paid through the Masons by some American media bigwigs. Or the one that Amanda's supporters are racists and filthy mafioso. Or the one that Amanda was sexually attracted to Meredith.

Huh, in all seriousness thought I saw a picture of her doing it...

I must also state that if you asked me her name yesterday, i would have answered Amanda Fox.

Maybe that is indicative of the very casual reader of the press coverage, all i could remember was the cartwheel and the fact she is attractive.

Just heard the news.

What a bunch of bull. I feel so sorry for Amanda and Raffaele.

I can't believe this. I hope Amanda appeals this to kingdom come and the American government fights any attempt at extradition tooth and nail.

Ad hominem is the preferred strategy, I get it.

Can you venture an opinion what crime they were convicted of? Ritualistic rite from Mignini tha Massei disbelieved? A choice for evil that the ISC disbelieved? The sex game gone wrong that Crini disbelieved? Or the pooh in the toilet that now Nencini needs to shoehorn into a motivations.....

... assuming he doesn't come up with a completely new theory no one has heard of before - let alone defendants who never know what they are defending themselves from.

But ad hominem works, too.
