Al Gore...hypocrite?

apparently so

According to the Tennessean, Gore used recent attacks on the Dixie Chicks that followed anti-war comments by Natalie Maines as an example. Gore told the audience, "They were made to feel un-American and risked economic retaliation because of what was said. Our democracy has taken a hit," Gore said. "Our best protection is free and open debate."

I probably missed the bit where you explained why he was a hypocrite. All I saw was a rant on your site.

Well, no, he's not really.

The Dixie Chicks were called un-American for doing exactly what Americans should do, and some people chose to speak for everyone and say their music (which has nothing to do with their political views) ought to be boycotted.

The Dixie Chicks aren't a corporation that does nasty things. The Dixie Chicks don't break the law. The Dixie Chicks don't employ children in sweat shops. Entirely different situation with entirely different circumstances.

Surprise surprise, Gore then has an entirely different opinion! It's like he had different opinions on different subjects. Imagine that.

The problem is, he thinks what the Dixie Chicks said/did is a good example of free speech. (And they have a prefect right to say what they want.) But, people complained, and stopped buying their CDs. Bascially, they were criticized. Which should also be considered 'free speech'.

So, he was for one form of free speech (criticizing the prez), but against another form (complaining about someone's polical views).

The Dixie Chicks have a right to say whatever they want. And there has been no government censorship. But the public also has a right to comment on them, or to buy (or in this case not buy) their music for any reason they wish.

Apology?

I just got this in my e-mail. Don't know if it's legit, but interesting anyway.
This it the full apology of Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks. Bet you haven't seen this in too many newspapers.

Apology from Natalie Maines

As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I now realize that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect.

I hope everyone understands, I'm just a young girl who grew up in Texas. As far back as I can remember, I heard people say they were ashamed of President Clinton. I saw bumper stickers calling him everything from a pothead to a murderer. I heard people on the radio and TV like Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, Newt Gingrich and Trent Lott bad mouthing the President and ridiculing his wife and daughter at every opportunity.

I heard LOTS of people disrespecting the President. So I guess I just assumed it was acceptable behavior.

But now, thanks to the thousands of angry people who want radio stations to boycott our music because criticizing the President is unpatriotic, I realize it's wrong to have a liberal opinion if you're a country music artist. I guess I should have thought about that before deciding to play music that attracts hypocritical red necks.

I also realize now that I'm supposed to just sing and look cute so our fans won't have anything to upset them while they're cheating on their wives or getting in drunken bar fights or driving around in their pickup trucks shooting highway signs and small animals.

And most important of all, I realize that it's wrong for a celebrity to voice a political opinion, unless they're Charlie Daniels, Clint Black, Merle Haggard, Barbara Mandrell, Loretta Lynn, Ricky Skaggs, Travis Tritt, Hank Williams Jr, Amy Grant, Larry Gatlin, Crystal Gayle, Reba McEntire, Lee Greenwood, Lorrie Morgan, Anita Bryant, Mike Oldfield, Ted Nugent, Wayne Newton, Dick Clark, Jay Leno, Drew Carey, Dixie Carter, Victoria Jackson, Charleton Heston, Fred Thompson, Ben Stein, Bruce Willis, Kevin Costner, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Bo Derek, Rick Schroeder, George Will, Pat Buchanan, Bill O'Reilly, Joe Rogan, Delta Burke, Robert Conrad or Jesse Ventura.

God Bless America,
Natalie

LOL
Everybody now,
"Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by a damned old train"

:D

I doubt it is legit. Here is a statement from what looks to be a more official site.

"As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American."

I knew it was fake when she started talking about 'looking cute'. That porky little blonde toad got hit with the ugly stick more than a few times...

Yeah, I suspected it was fake, and sure enough, good old Snopes turned it up as the work of a parodist working for
The Specious Report.

I just thought it was an interesting counterpart to all the "patriotic" messages that have been flying around lately.

I do find it interesting though that when conservatives find a woman they dislike, they immediately begin to insult their looks. Both Hillary and Chelsea Clinton got a heavy dose of it, as did Janet Reno. I have not noticed any of the Bush women getting similar treatment.

No liberals just insult that "coke-head, moron, chimp-looking, nazi" instead of insulting his wife and kids. Oh, but they do mention his "crack-whore niece" from time to time don't they?

Instead of making fun of his daughters' looks, Hustler magazine offers money for nude photos of them. Yes, its a big change.

Even with all my liberal friends and connections, the only thing I have seen was the "coke head" allegation, which Bush has pointedly refused to comment on.

Maybe it's because I don't listen to the hate-mongering liberal talk shows enough.

Ah, that free speech thing again?

Free Speech- the greatest and most accurate method used in locating an idiot.

Why is it there is more flack for a call to boycott, which I do believe still falls under the same premise of "free speech", than the comments made to begin with?

Is political correctness going astray and we now can't call a dumb bimbo a dumb bimbo when she says something that, right or wrong, is merely her opinion and ours may differ than hers?

I think a boycott is silly. Well, at least a call for a boycott. If one has an inclination to avoid the band because of some comments made by one of them then they should feel free to avoid them. A call for a boycott is playground tactics at best. Little Johnny got insulted by Bobby and now hates Bobby. His comments are as follows, "I hate you Bobby and everybody should hate you too and if they don't then I will hate them as well."

It sort of distracts from the purpose of free speech and the allowance of others to make their own freaking decisions.

She's a moron and so are those that call for more than just themselves to avoid her product.

Oppose this comment and you must be opposing my freedom of speech. ;) haha

As long as people keep trotting out Gore (private citizen) and Clinton (private citizen) to criticize, the more attention will be diverted from the shortcomings of the present elected administration. Limbaugh, Hannity, Robertson are particularly adept at this tactic.

Well, I'm shocked--SHOCKED!--that a hypocritical lawyer who sometimes tell lies can be succesful in politics.

What is the world coming to?

That's why I'm so glad that we now have such an honest Christian man who has never lied in the White House. There are, however, one or two in the senate that I'm worried about.
