Encountered my first "Truther" today

I'm not giving them "leeway" I just think that saying Truthers are "mentally unstable" is inaccurate....

I agree with that, and to bring it back to the topic of the thread, the sort of mental instability evinced by the fellow in tri's anecdote doesn't seem just like the characteristic of believing nonsense about 9/11.

I've had some spooky conversations with people about 9/11, but I wouldn't expect any of them to physically challenge someone they believed to be an NYC firefighter.

If others can honestly say otherwise, that's interesting -- and we don't need to go 20 rounds on the meaning of "mental instability." I suspect that some people who immediately believed the story did so not because it matched anything in their experience, but because it fit a general sense that Truthers are crazy enough to do almost anything. But maybe I'm entirely wrong, and it really doesn't matter much. As some folks pointed out at the time, hey, it was someone telling a story on the internet.

Over the weekend I was talking to a poker buddy and he casually mentioned that the book Dianetics and the movie Zeitgeist had changed his life.

I just rolled my eyes.

I'm said to say I've never met any truthers in real life :(

I mean, I know 2 or 3 people who think 9/11 was a conspiracy theory, but none of them are what I would call a 'truther' because, well, they're friends of mine, and none of them go out of their way into the public eye to hand out material, talk to randoms or push their ideas onto anyone.

Personally I'd love to meet someone in real life standing on a street yelling at people about conspiracies :D

Follow-up questions:
Do you believe that thousands of undercover NWO minions have kept 911 a secret for over 12 years? How often do you wear an aluminum foil hairpiece?

A hairpiece is a wig, not a hat. You want "haberdashery".

Training, talking to them.

That being said, the last two truthers I saw, I did not talk to, rather they were talking (well more like yelling) at each other on a suburban train platform basically saying that "F word 9/11 was a (very naughty word) inside job." Both were highly intoxicated. Perhaps sober they might have been excellent bike messengers or the equivalent. As it were, they should have been in the drunk tank to sleep it off. Of course, it WAS nearly 7 pm....
Cool story, bro.

I have a poker buddy that says the exact same thing...weird.

Girlfriend just recently watched Zeitgeist on Netflix and I had to roll my eyes every time she mentioned it. Now she wants to watch Loose Change.

Questioning my relationship status ATM LOL.

Bad enough I have to deal with the popular Stundie on another forum I subscribe to, now I have to deal with her.

So recently some classmates of mine started watching some Truther videos on YouTube (I don't know which ones) and started to buy into it. Ironically enough, we're in the Aviation Maintenance Technology course. Doubly ironic, we're in the module for Turbine Powerplat. Triply ironic, I was holding in my hand a turbine nozzle stator from a JT-8 that been partially melted away by a hot start when they tried to tell me that jet fuel can't burn hot enough to melt steel.

Their justification for buying into it? The government is corrupt.

Anyone care to advise me how to deal with this nonsense?

The government may be corrupt, but that has nothing to do with jet fuel fires being hot enough to melt steel.

The government may be corrupt, but that doesn't mean they did 9/11. Terrorists with a long history of attacking the U.S. and American interests like to attack the U.S. and American interests. Which makes the stronger case?

You have identified the fundamental problem with 9/11 Truth. They are guided by ideology, not information. They don't want to find out what really happened. They want to find out how they can blame their demon of choice (Bush/Cheney, NWO, Illuminati, Jews, etc, etc, etc,...). Ideology is the Chimpanzee part of the brain at work and nobody looks good flinging poop.

Tell him you're a government agent in charge of suppressing such stories now would he please repeat what he said and direct it to your left shirt collar.

A nephew of mine, knowing I was into science and technology, brought up the topic of WTC 7 and how it mysteriously collapsed, bucking all physical laws. When I replied with facts about it he was a bit taken aback, "you know about WTC 7?". Seems the site he had been reading had been telling him that no one knows about WTC 7, its been thoroughly suppressed and was the 'smoking gun' showing MIHOP.

He argued a bit, even using the, BBC reported it fallen when it hadn't, meme. I asked him how that worked, how does telling the BBC that a building IS going to collapse before it actually does would make any sense in the scenario of a conspiracy by gov't planners of 9/11. Seems he hadn't been told the answer to that. I believe that he's a bit more sceptical of the 9/11 TM now.

Jaydeehess, It's good to catch them early before their minds crystallize around these ideas. Congratulations.

I think this point about corruption is key. governments, bureaucracies, large institutions, and of course large corporations are self serving and those who lead them in key positions within these institutions are self serving and looking to protect their positions. Accordingly this produces MASSIVE PR and spin and sometimes (often?) outright lying. So people have an understandable mistrust of what they are told by these institutions.

However, lying, PR, spin, deception, self promotion and so forth does not mean that the USG conspired to carry out 9/11.

Truthers further are driven by the notion of cui bono. The look at what the outcome of 9/11 was (policies, government spending and so forth) and assume that those who benefited from these policies and appropriations etc. actually conspired to do 9/11 FOR those very benefits. This is very much how a crime is often examined when trying to find the perpetrator.... Who benefited from the crime?

One needs to look at natural disasters which often produce policy changes and large government appropriations... But of course no government or agency or corporation caused the natural disaster. And although many suffer from disasters, others find business in relief, rebuilding and so forth. No on accuses those who find business post disaster as engaged in any sort of wrong doing.... Well some DO leverage the disaster into rip off schemes and profitable ventures such as re build contracts.

There were agencies and corporations which did benefit from 9/11 such as the designers and contractors and workers who built the new structures, the memorials etc. They didn't work for nothing. But no one is accusing these interests of causing 9/11 to get some building contracts.

The cui bono might be the military, the oil companies, intel who all seemed to make out post 9/11. But this would be the case even with an attack from some radical ME group... which would be leveraged to advance the ongoing agendas of the military, the oil companies and intel. Disaster capitalism at work. And of course these agendas would be couched in PR and spin and lies... as they always are. Nothing new there.
