My take?
***********
What do you call a person who for years accompanies her ministers on trips to nursing homes to visit with the elderly? For free?
Who during church services, led by her personally, passionately talked about how her church will one day help the elderly and the AIDS patients and all the downtrodden, and who herself goes out and tries to help these people?
What do you call a person who sits you down for a free psychic reading when she sees you are struggling? Who invites you to her trance classes for free?
What do you call a person who tells you she only does psychic readings to pay the bills, but her real love has always been hypnosis and past life regressions because of what she sincerely believes can be learned from them about the other side?
What do you call a person who fakes trance classes? Who pretends she is channeling her spirit guide but is in fact making the whole thing up?
Who asks everyone in the office to please, please pray because she's nervous about how a show will go and she wants to do well?
What do you call a person who will talk on the phone with you for an hour and has you in stitches, her humor is so dry and funny? Whose love and affection for you are real and tangible?
Who does a past life regression on you and is sincerely trying to figure out what you might be able to "see" on the other side? Because she believes in all this passionately?
Who you interact with all the time and who truly believes there will be earth changes happening at the turn of the century (which a decade later she will half-heartedly pretend never happened, though continuing to sell a book detailing it), and who adores her father and can't stand her mother, who gossips and pokes fun of people, who really seems irked by namby-pamby people but at the same time can't stand anyone who seems in any way a threat to her status as top dog?
Who is always "in character," never ever acting like a person who is deliberately faking something? Who, when she gets going, talks as passionately about God and love and the other side as if she wishes she could shout it from the rooftops?
But then says to respond to the questions of people who want to know how long it will be until they meet Mr. or Mrs. Right with, "two years?"
What do you call a person who lies on television about supporting her ministers, knowing the ministers can hear her?
What do you call a person who does all day seminars where she sits and talks from the heart about how to become more psychic, telling stories from her own life and past, where her sincerity and passion and caring are evident even in the tone of her voice? Who tells you the secret to being psychic is to say the first thing off the top of your head?
Who in later years you realize is wrong more often than not probably precisely because she believes the way to be psychic is to say the first thing off the top of your head?
What do you call a person who seems to really believe she is psychic but often gets things terribly, destructively wrong?
Terribly, destructively wrong as in telling Shawn Hornbeck's parents he was dead?
Who changes her story when she realizes she is caught in a contradiction?
Who calls people "dark entities" who you know are quite the opposite?
Who gets to where she can charge $1000 for a salon? $750 for a reading? and still pays her employees as meagerly as she did when she really was barely making ends meet?
Who after years of scraping by, makes it big, so big that she is suddenly famous and wealthy and living the good life, perhaps losing sight of what originally inspired her? Was it really inspiration? If not, what was it, then?

I have written this for myself, not for any of you. I'm no writer.
Her death just takes me back through it all. It's all Sylvia. My personal experience of Sylvia.
A big mass of contradictions. Good and bad. I don't get it. I know she faked the trance classes. I know she lied. But all the rest of it? I just don't get it. Never have, probably never will. Doesn't matter.
I can't say, like most skeptics, that I loathe her or that she is a knowing fraud. Maybe she was, and she reserved that for only her husband and closest family. Going to the old folks homes, singing them Christmas carols, all an act? And I can obviously never say what her adoring fans say.
But it would be nice if it could all be black or white.
Many people here will carry on as if it is - all black, that is. And her fan sites will carry on as if it's all white.
Her closest family could probably explain to me what exactly was going on. There are probably others like me who knew her just well enough to not get it. People with a grudge who will be happy to call her a fake, and people who know nothing about it who will state with authority that she was a knowing fraud. Adoring fans who have even less of a clue and don't even realize she faked the trance classes.
What a mess, Sylvia.
That's my take.
