Merged Sylvia Browne passed away this morning

This is oddly emotional for me. Growing up with a mother who was a staunch believer in psychics and the paranormal, I was aware of Browne long before I was interested in skepticism. Really, it was the gradual realization that Browne and her ilk were fraudulent which spurred my skepticism, which now informs much more of my personal philosophy than a disbelief in psychics. I suppose "Thanks for the critical thinking skills" is the nicest thing I can say.

If she had grand kids and was good to them I hope they are alright and being looked after.

Besides that, good riddance

Sorry, just because someone is dead doesn't rehabilitate them. She was a horrible person in life and death hasn't changed that. Her family may mourn her but the world is just a little better off without her conning people.

This. ^^^^

I would discourage one and all from any snarky comments. Whatever else may be said of her, she is survived by family members who I think deserve to mourn her passing without hearing of snarky comments about her passing.

She had no problems milking the emotions of those who lost loved ones and capitalizing on that.

So **** her.

Well, there goes the last chance the cops had of finding those kidnapped children.

I have to go with Robert. As much as I loathed her, I give her family respect. However if one of them announces they have contact with her, I will rescind it.

Why exactly? She was an evil woman who stole money from people who could ill-afford it.

Why exactly should we pay any form of respect to her at all?

Reminds me of a recent conversation at the funeral of my wife's grandmother:

Funeral home woman: Im so sorry for your loss
Me: No loss to me. She was a horrible, horrible woman. Everyone here is just relieved she's dead. For the past 10 years it has taken every ounce of my self-control not to put a pillow over her face in the middle of night
Funeral home woman: ....

Seriously, if people were dbags in life, theyre dbags in death.

Sylvia Browne was a gigantic dbag. All Im sad about is she didnt spend the last 20 years in prison for fraud.

I don't wish her family ill (except for the ones that have followed her into the scamming business), but she is one of the few people about who'd I'd say, "The world is better without them."

I'm withholding snarky comments for the time being, though I do have to say, if a family member goes to a skeptical forum immediately following Browne's death, they should be prepared for what they see.

Ding Dong! The Witch is dead. Which old Witch? The Wicked Witch!
Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead.
Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.
Wake up, the Wicked Witch is dead. She's gone where the goblins go,
Below - below - below. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.
Ding Dong' the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low.
Let them know
The Wicked Witch is dead!
Yes, let the joyous news be spread The wicked Old Witch at last is dead!

If she didn't want her surviving family to be emotionally damaged by people saying unsubstantiated and frequently callous things about her after her death, maybe she should have thought of that before she spent decades emotionally damaging the surviving families of other people by saying unsubstantiated and frequently callous things about them after their death.

Hitler and Stalin had family too:D

I hope the rest of the frauds keep her babbling her nonsense for years to come. Hell, she used to charge seven hundred bucks for a phone call; now they can get her to yammer for free.

What do you call a person who claims to have an ability that she does not actually have?

What do you call a person who presents herself as offering help but actually offers harm?

What do you call a person who invents a religion for less-than-honorable purposes?

What do you call a person who has devoted her life to the peddling of nonsense and the deception of those who are suffering?

I know what I would call such a person, but now is not the time and this forum would not allow me to use that language in any event.
