Texas Repubs pass abortion bill

At best, they are "pro-birth", because after a kid is born, Texas Republicans could give a crap.

I've described the attitude this way, by a paraphrasing a line from the opening narration of the movie Blood Simple: "After birth, you're on your own."

Pro-life is pro-life - shouldn't matter what end of the spectrum the person is, right? Thus, the execution-happy Texans are not, in fact, "pro-life". At best, they are "pro-birth", because after a kid is born, Texas Republicans could give a crap.

Do you apply this standard both ways? Any given "pro-choice" person is likely anti-choice on plenty of issues.

I'm pretty sure choice has a larger set than life. As such, pro-life people are typically anti-choice on things like gay marriage, or, you know, life post-birth.

So you want the self serving colloquial term for your side and a stricter, very literal, term for the other side?

You are hardly alone in that.

Everyone is pro-life and pro-choice. It's only when it comes to the issue of abortion that the terms get muddled.

Singleminded, you mean.

Which has made them scarily effective and capable of punching way above their weight.

No. Being against executions is not the same as advocating we let people walk. Well, maybe to stupid pe-

Oh.

The antichoicers can paint you as saying "Ted Bundy/Jeffrey Dahmer has more value than an unborn child to those lot! That does not make sense!", and a lot of people can buy that line.

"It's my body."
"These are personal matters." How are those two different?

Yes, but the rhetoric is different. One is "**** you, I got mine!" and the other is "this is a private matter".

How about this: totally inform teens about all the good and bad aspects of sex, which gives them more information, enables them to make more informed choices, which will result in fewer unwanted pregnancies in the first place, and thus fewer abortions. They don't expect teens to drive without receiving instruction and passing a test - why do they expect teens to "just say no to sex"?

I was talking more about the Antichoichers idea of sex education (i.e. making them watch graphic videos of childbirth and abortion, as well as making them look at graphic results of STDS). You have no idea how much they put into terrifying the **** out of people.

I just wish the pro life people would be honest about how happy they are to let women die in agony. Mere medical necessity is never a reason to violate your precious morals and treat your patient instead of letting them die.

The important thing is that you recognize that anyone who disagrees with you is a monster who does so for sadistic reasons rather than less horrible ones.

That is probably the most offensive thing I've seen all day. I hope something terrible happens to that guy.

This one too:

Those won't work. You need wire hangers.

It would be, if there was no difference at all between a fetus in it's 6th month of development and a convicted criminal.

You're right. When conservatives/Christians/Republicans use the term "pro-life" it needs an asterisk next to it.

It's all about safety for women, is it?

In Texas, women die in childbirth at a rate of almost three times the national average. By contrast, fewer than 1 woman in 100,000 die as a result of legal abortion.

People, quit talking about the safety of the woman. When restrictive abortion laws are combined with cuts to Planned Parenthood and other women's health services, it becomes clear that it's all about your desire to restrict women's reproductive rights.

Hell, at the end, even Perry and Dewhurst quit pretending that it was about women's safety.

And it's none of your business.

I'm a "root cause" kinda guy.

Why?
Why is Texas an outlier? (In the wrong direction on the bell curve?)

Why do an unusally high number of women die during childbirth in Texas?

Yes, that's offensive. Fortunately, I have the author on ignore, and he doesn't have the same profile as Erickson. I'm not going to be much offended by a simple internet troll.

Ahem.

The issue isn't nearly as black and white as most people pretend. But for a more light-hearted take on the whole issue than what I linked above, there's this.

Life means being alive, and not much else. It's not that I necessarily want this; it's just the way it is. You can't say you're pro-life and have the most executions of any state.

A lot of people are stupid, and will buy anything. It doesn't make it true. If someone is truly pro-life, they should want to incarcerate prisoners, because groups like The Innocence Project show every day that "guilty" people aren't always guilty. If they're in prison, it sucks, but they can be released. If they're dead, too late.

They do. I think it's ridiculous that they will a) stand outside abortion clinics with graphic pictures, but then go try to ban Huckleberry Finn from the library, and b) will tell teens all the bad stuff about abortions, but won't tell teens all the good and bad things about sex so they hopefully don't have pregnancies in the first place.

This can just as easily be turned the other way. If someone is pro-choice they should oppose imprisoning someone unless that person chooses to be a prisoner.

They did.
They chose to commit a crime and that resulted in their incarceration.

I don't see any contradiction between anti-choice and pro-death penalty (one is about the question of when is a human a human, while the other is a question of whether the state's monopoly on violence should extend to killing people as punishment for crimes)

Again, there's not much contradictions there. For one thing, The displaying of graphic pictures outside abortion clinics are seen as "political statements", while huckleberry finn was seen as art being racist (refer to controversy regarding Tintin in the Congo). The horror stories about abortions/stds are seen as a "scare 'em straight" deterrent wrt teenage pregnancy (like the Red Asphalt films which depict gruesome aftermaths of car crashes), so there isn't much contradiction there.

By that standard, getting executed is an elaborate form of suicide.

My wish is just that people would be consistent if they want the "pro-life" or the "pro-choice" side to adopt a more literal nickname I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that they do so for both sides, not just the evil other side. If anything, the pro-choice side is probably more anti-choice than the pro-life side is anti-life. How many pro-choicers actually side with choice on all issues? I would bet that not a single one does. Being consistently pro-choice would mean opposing any legal restrictions on behavior. Even the need to get a driver's license is anti-choice. Why nitpick about one side but not the other? Neither nickname is literal.

The important thing is that you recognize that anyone who disagrees with you is a monster who does so for sadistic reasons rather than less horrible ones.

And the women who suffer because of it really care that they are being made to suffer because their life and pain doesn't matter. If it mattered then hospitals wouldn't be able to say "we don't perform life saving abortions because they are unethical". Shows their respect for life right there.
