What book is everyone writing right now?

Well, I guess I'll be the voice in the wilderness here, but I like the one without the box better! To me the box seems to get in the way and clutter up the picture. But I'm partial to non-box covers (most of mine were done that way, as I mentioned before).

I know, I did it off arthwollipot's suggestion and as you say it works but I can't put my finger on why either. :)
I've had a look at a few other science fiction book covers (very small sample), and none of them have text over picture elements. The "problem" as I saw it on your cover was that the text was over a part of the picture that had stars and a nebula, so it was text over a busy background. The few other samples I checked had cover images such that the text was over plain block colour. That's why I suggested framing the text - so that the background didn't distract from it.

I've seen a few where the test is superimposed over a graphic element; but the text is also formatted and coloured so as to contrast sufficiently with the background.

Wow, looks like my mental block has finally gone away. Really starting to crack the pace now; I rewrote my most recent chapter in two days.

Where/when can I read something of yours, Gumboot? I'm intrigued by, "The Silver-eyed Child". Not the violence, necessarily, but I'd like to see how you handled the 'protag as a child' backstory. Plus, I'd like to read your work.

Not too much longer to wait... but here's a little sneak peak...

What has become of the thunder?
Whither now falls winter’s rain?
Why have the storm clouds all parted?
Why does the tempest now wane?

She has faded with her children,
Vanished like mist in a breeze.
Only their shadows remain;
Only the shape of their deeds.

Gone are the last of her daughters,
The last of her sons are lost.
And the earth has soaked up their blood;
And the earth has paid the cost.

All of the dancers have fallen,
Their blades are still in the sheath,
And justice has fled from the world,
And the earth weeps in its grief.

The rain has been traded for tears,
The wind is a mournful cry.
No more with the lightning they dance,
No more to play in the sky.

Are you going to do the whole thing in verse - like Beowulf or something? That would be a feat! And pretty unique in modern fantasy...

Hah hah, no, that's just a spot of world-building. My longest piece of verse is only 250 lines, and that was a mission. I'm no John Milton.

Goodreads is a fun place. Take a look around & check out the forums & other groups. There's a lot of useful and interesting stuff there.

In addition to working on cover art I'm also trying to build up my online presence I've actual started a blog about my writing here:

http://fourth-planet-problem.blogspot.com/

I'm even planning on starting a Facebook page.:eek:
My personal preference reading a web page is dark letters on a light background. Maybe I'm in the minority, I don't know, but white letters on black is hard on the eyes.

And you should get that profile up there soon. :)

Honestly I do prefer the white on black myself. I have updated the profile and I'm not being enigmatic with the photo, I really don't have any of me.

I'm writing a book based on the premise of having obtained my Wife's Great Great Grandfathers journals and presenting his life within that journal starting with his going out to India in 1836 as an officer in the Bombay Artillery and his later involvement in an expedition into Independent Tartary (Central Asia).

I would love to write a book, even have a nice set of ideas that fit together nicely, but regrettably have none of the talent to fuel it. I am entirely certain that any aspirations of authorhood on my behalf would result in the grownup equivalent of a fistful of crayons rubbed frenziedly across the lower part of an inconvenient wall.
