Continuation Part 5: Discussion of the Amanda Knox/Raffaele Sollecito case

They were all the victims of the police in Perugia and Mignini, if there's racists it's them.

You're getting played, I don't suppose you ever took into account that the 'PR effort' might have attracted so many people because they were actually right? Dude, no one's getting paid here, get it? All those FBI agents, scientists, journalists, writers, lawyers and the such freely give their time and talents because this is a gross injustice and a engrossing case and story.

Almost everything TJMK puts out is twisted or untrue, place creeps me the hell out. That's not a healthy environment. Haven't you noticed when you rely on them for information your posts get sillier and easier to trash with well supported links and logic? The only one I know stupid and dishonest enough to try to give someone the impression that this case isn't Mignini's baby is Creepy Pete.

I don't think anybody here is getting paid by the PR machine of Knox. you guys seem real young, some of you may still be teenagers, most are probably in college and no older than 30 or so.

I don't rely exclusively on TJMK although they have lots of interesting stuff. my favorite site on this case is this real simple one that lays out the case against Knox ...it's murder of Meredith kercher.com or something like that. the dna evidence especially is explained well over there in a way that I could understand it with no background in biology.
TMJK has some good information on the cell phone evidence, and also the MOF, Doug Preston, Narducci case stuff which I find interesting. I love all the conflict b/t all these different players. that Pete guy you talk about can be pretentious at times (which seems to be a trait of all British people for some reason) and he is prone to forcing his liberal politics into his discussions about the Knox trial...I remember one time he started brown nosing Katie Couric as some kind of excellent interviewer but most Americans think Couric is a bimbo...true story, Couric was talking about being in a room with all these men and she described the room as being "jockular", she really thought the word jocular was really "jockular" and descriptive of a group of men acting like a bunch of jocks rather than it's real meaning of people, gender neutral, just having a good time. you'd think a journalist would understand what a word like jocular means. she wasn't trying to be witty with this, she really thought jocular meant a bunch of guys acting like jocks.

I think most people are going to mock your demonization of the prosecuter. you've never seen me brown nose Mignini like those sites do. i'm perfectly willing to admit he plays for keeps and willing to do the dirty things you need to do to get jusice and he made Knox cry in court with mind games like referring to Rudy as poor poor Rudy. When I read about that, I knew Mignini was the man. he's tweaking this Butcher of Perugia with these subtle digs throughtout the trial. you have to sit back and admire that. I like the fact he is more Dirty Harry and less Gandhi. TJMK and PMF make him out like he's Gandhi.

So what?

What significance do you think this has even if that's an accurate summation?

she claims concern/panick over her roommate due to the locked door, yet there is no concern/panick demonstrated by her actions. Why lie about it?

You don't need to have a degree in biology to understand DNA evidence. But without a background in biology it is possible to be bamboozled by somebody who seems to know what they're talking about. The problem with the DNA evidence in this case is that the way it was collected makes the results of any test worthless. Then there's the chain of custody issue.

If you want to convict Amanda Knox, you can't use the DNA evidence to do so.

I have to disagree with you, apparently the Y DNA and the auto. DNA on the bra clasp BOTH point to Raffe. with the Y DNA, it could also be his daddy or maybe an uncle if he has one but that would be absurd in this case. somehow I don't think his rich doctor daddy showed up at the cottage that night, scaled up that wall to the high window, sniffed through Filo's clothing, had a dump on the toilet, then proceeded to go Butcher of Perugia on young Meredith. the auto DNA was a strong match with 16 loci, even if the prosecution gives the defense the 4 contested loci to be cool, it still points hard at Raff. I really think the all you need in this case to convict both of them is the DNA on the bra clasp, and that would convict them in every country in this world except maybe North Korea.

College kids are out getting laid!

My guess is you would be younger than most of the more prolific posters, especially in this thread.

This one?

The truth is they don't actually understand it! :)

Would you like to defend any of the false or irrelevant 'evidence' contentions there? It's been a while since I tore apart the luminol prints they tried to pretend were blood. I see they have the relative sensitivities of luminol and TMB wrong, if you're gonna use lab conditions for one you can't use field conditions for the other. However short version:

TMB is a highly sensitive blood test, luminol is more so, but that doesn't matter in this case. They had to come up with that BS theory because they got caught hiding the TMB negatives. TMB is natural chemical reaction, if it fails the test, it's not blood. The idea that it could have been diluted below the threshold of TMB but detected by luminol seems clever--until you take into account the nice bright pretty pictures. Luminol is also a chemical reaction, but it doesn't glow so nice and bright when the blood is diluted to virtually nil and the luminol has almost nothing to react to... ;)

Then of course there's the fact that even if they were there's no possible source of the diluted blood other than something already known and non-incriminating such as all the people walking through that hall and bathroom the day of the discovery.

You don't get much stupider than that, I felt like a fool when I realized it, as much time as I spent on it, but actually chemiluminescence is a fascinating subject and I learned a lot--so no worries.

TMJK has some good information on the cell phone evidence, and also the MOF, Doug Preston, Narducci case stuff which I find interesting. Heh. I wouldn't go to TJMK for accurate info on the Monster of Florence, you'd be better off reading Douglas Preston's book.

He's a kook who does hurtful and dishonest things, he's not Dirty Harry he's just dirty.

here is True Justice summary of the conflicting statements of Knox with the cell phone record, this is what they do best over there:

4) The afternoon of 2 November

At 1208pm, Amanda Knox called Filomena and said she was worried about the front door being open and blood stains in the small bathroom. Knox claims that she made this call from Sollecito’s apartment.

However, in his prison diary, Raffaele describes the same conversation as taking place at the cottage.

Knox claimed that when she called Meredith’s Italian phone it “just kept ringing, no answer”.

Her mobile phone records show this call lasted just three seconds, and the call to the UK phone lasted just four seconds. (Meredith’s WeAnswer Call service, which prides itself on how quickly it answers its customers’ calls, boasts that their average speed-of-answer is 5.5 seconds. There were no messages left.)

At 12.34pm Amanda and Filomena again spoke on their phones. Filomena said, “We spoke to each other for the third time and she told me that the window in my room was broken and that my room was in a mess. At this point I asked her to call the police and she told me that she already had.”

The prosecution introduced records to show that Knox and Sollecito didn’t actually call the police until 12.51pm.

In her email to friends in Seattle on 4 November, Amanda Knox says she called Meredith’s phones after speaking to Filomena. Knox’s mobile phone records prove that this was untrue.

In the email, Amanda also claims that she called Filomena back three quarters of an hour later – after Raffaele finished calling the police at 12:55pm. But cellphone records show that Knox never ever called Filomena back at all.

Sollecito and Knox both claimed they had called the police before the postal police had turned up at the cottage and were waiting for them. Sollecito later admitted that this was not true, and that he had lied because he had believed Amanda Knox’s version of what had happened.

He said he went outside “to see if I could climb up to Meredith’s window” but could not. “I tried to force the door but couldn’t, and at that point I decided to call my sister for advice because she is a Carabinieri officer. She told me to dial 112 (the Italian emergency number) but at that moment the postal police arrived.

He added: “In my former statement I told you a load of rubbish because I believed Amanda’s version of what happened and did not think about the inconsistencies.” (The Times, 7 November, 2007).

The CCTV cameras in the car park record the arrival of the postal police at 12.25pm which corroborates Sollecito’s admission that he had spoken rubbish.

Knox’s email to friends in Seattle describes the decision to call the police as something implemented by herself and Sollecito, after she had tried to see through Meredith’s window, and after Raffaele had tried to break down Meredith’s door.

Knox’s mobile phone records show that she called her mother at 12:47pm, but she makes no mention of this call in her email. (This call was very extensively analysed by fellow poster Finn MacCool and he showed a fascinating progression in both Amanda’s and her mother’s recollection of that call.)

Edda Mellas claims that she told Amanda to hang up and call the police – but Amanda made no mention of this advice from her mother in describing their decision to call the police.

Amanda Knox testified that she couldn’t even remember phoning her mother, which will be very difficult for the court to believe. Phoning her mother when it is well after midnight in Seattle to tell her mother that she thought somebody had broken into her home and that her housemate was missing seems an unlikely thing to forget.

Amanda Knox told the postal police that Meredith always kept her door locked. Filomena strongly disagreed with her, and told the postal police the opposite was true.

The prosecution also made it obvious to the court that Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, like Rudy Guede, changed their stories to fit new facts as they became known:

When Sollecito was confronted with the mobile phone records on 5 November, he immediately admitted that they hadn’t called 112 before the postal police arrived.

After initially denying it, Knox readily admitted that she was at the cottage when Meredith was killed when she found out that Sollecito had stopped providing her with an alibi.

Despite this changing of their stories to take into account the latest known facts, Knox’s and Sollecito’s versions still contained numerous contradictions. Sollecito’s final alibi contains several apparent lies, and Amanda Knox accused Diya Lumumba of killing Meredith while making no mention of Rudy Guede.

who decides the independence of experts? that would be a real subjective thing, I would think. I never heard of a judge doing that in a criminal trial, usually the prosecution picks their experts, defense picks theirs, both sides give their opinion and jury weighs both of their cases.

you guys would be screaming bloody hell if Hellman had picked "independent" DNA experts who agreed with Stefanoi. it seems like in this scenario it is much easy for people to think that the judge / experts could be bought by people, say Raffe's rich doctor daddy, to have the "right" opinion. that's why it seems better to allow the prosecution and defense pick their own experts to negate any possibliy of outside influence. i'm not a legal person obviously but this strikes me as real odd and I wouldn't be surprised if it's a major reason why the Supreme Court slapped down the appeals verdict, b/c all they heard was an opinion supporting the defense (although C and V confirmed the Y DNA was Raffe's and only theorized that contamination was possible without explaining how it was possible).

*facepalm*

Oh. My. Gawd.

They're talking about two different times, Amanda's initial reaction was to pound on the door, have Raffaele try to break it, try to see if they could see in through both the keyhole and then outside, when that failed she continues calling people to tell them about it. That was the 'panic' part.

What they're referring to is the period where Amanda described herself in the note as 'hanging back, having done her part' so that's just taking one part of the note and applying it to the wrong set of circumstances.

I think I will describe that site as 'sound bites for simpletons!' :p

This is interesting. Is there a source? I know there were early reports they were looking for an African but I thought that was to do with the guy washing blood off himself in the fountain (:boggled: btw. I can exclusively reveal he was the same guy who phoned through the warning: Meredith dies tonight - but that was a totally unrelated case which needn't detain us).

If there were negroid hairs, and the implication of Douglas's interview is they had these before the interrogations, it would explain a great deal. It would give the cops a very pleasing, tightly-wound crime theory. Given the burglary was faked and there were no signs of a struggle anywhere but in the bedroom they would be looking for an insider and/or a male person known to the victim who was black. The only black guy in the picture was Lumumba and they have this exchange of texts at the right time of the night.

They wrote precisely this theory down in the 1.45 'confession' but realised in the small hours the theory was not perfect and modified it mainly to get Raffaele in the picture but also to rectify her account of the exchange of texts to make it look more like Lumumba was setting up a meeting.

Those negroid hairs are important. What's the story? John Douglas has seen something we haven't.

It was in the London Times, anglo. I think it was around November 3rd. It is mentioned in Massei, where they claim the hairs turned out to be fibers.

ETA: Finally found a post about it, with a link to the article: http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7302771&postcount=12700

Science is science and this wasn't even close, that's why the independent experts concurred with all the rest of the DNA experts who freaked out at the little lab tech who tried to say she invented cold fusion for DNA work--with the same documentation and repeatability as the time that was announced...

Again, big picture here, you don't have to be a DNA expert to understand this. There were at absolute minimum three males on that clasp, probably about four, possibly more. If you think that DNA means Raffaele was involved in the murder, why doesn't that meant the other two or more were? All of this is LCN/LT DNA, the fact that Raffaele's profile is more robust may very well be related only to the fact that DNA lab had tested an awful lot of Raffaele's stuff... ;)

lol, you are citing the part of their story with no other witnesses. they obviously want you to believe they were in a state of panic. but reality is her cell phone record so no panic and relentless quest to contact Meredith on her phone, and she clearly was not interested in Meredith or her room, at least to panic level, when others arrived at the house. again, this other guy was able to bust down the door no problem so why could not our young stud kickerboxer Raffe, if they were so panicked they were looking through the keyhole and looking in from the window, etc.

let's try this another way, Knox told the police that Meredith locked her door all the time. so why was Knox in a state of panic earlier, as she claimed?

you guys seem to exhibit a bit of sexist disdain for this Stefoni babe, calling her a "little lab tech" Dude, she's one of the best DNA experts in Italy, you cannot claim she is not with credibility. she had to pass a series of difficult examinations to get her position.

it does not matter if there were a million male dna profiles on the bra clasp if Raffe cannot explain how his got there.

I just came across this interesting tidbit:

According to Sollecito’s forensic expert, Professor Vinci, Knox’s DNA was also on Meredith’s bra.

I guess that is to be expected cuz this happens when two roommate live together, their dna gets on each other's bras. LOL

here's some info on some other independent experts who have reviewed the DNA evidence and vote guilty for Knox and Raffie, fro your favorite website TJMK

2) Independent Reviews

Dr. Renato Biondo

There was an independent review of the forensic evidence in 2008.

Dr. Renato Biondo, the head of the DNA unit of the scientific police, reviewed Dr. Stefanoni’s investigation and the forensic findings. He testified at Rudy Guede’s fast track trial in October 2008 and confirmed that all the forensic findings were accurate and reliable.

He also praised the work of Dr. Stefanoni and her team. “We are confirming the reliability of the information collected from the scene of the crime and at the same time, the professionalism and excellence of our work.”

Professor Francesca Torricelli

The Kercher family hired their own DNA expert, Professor Francesca Torricelli, and asked her to examine the DNA evidence.

Professor Torricelli is the Director of a genetic facility at Careggi University Hospital and has been working in genetics since 1976. She testified at Knox’s and Sollecito’s trial last and she also confirmed Dr. Stefanoni’s findings.

She told the court that the significant amount of Sollecito’s DNA on Meredith’s bra clasp meant that it was unlikely that it was left by contamination. She also agreed with Dr. Stefanoni that Meredith’s DNA was on the blade of the double DNA knife.

General Luciano Garofano (image above)

Distinguished DNA expert and former Caribinieri General Luciano Garofano analysed the DNA and forensic evidence for the early 2010 book “Darkness Descending”.

He has more than 32 years of forensics experience and is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. In his section of the book he explains at length why he too thinks that Knox and Sollecito are guilty of Meredith’s murder.

In an interview with The Sun’s Nick Francis, he said that the right people had been convicted: “I believe the police have prosecuted and convicted the right people, even if they got some of the details wrong.”

He told reporter Andrea Vogt that there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn Knox’s and Sollecito’s convictions: “I do not believe that there is enough evidence to convince an Italian magistrate and jury to overturn this conviction”.

Dr. Anna Barbaro

Rudy Guede’s defense lawyers hired their own forensic expert, Dr. Anna Barbaro, and asked her to examine the DNA evidence.

She didn’t dispute the DNA evidence against Guede, Knox or Sollecito. Guede’s lawyers claim that there was an innocent explanation for his DNA being at the crime scene and that Knox’s and Sollecito’s DNA implicated them.

Guede lawyer Walter Biscotti noted that the evidence against Knox was particularly strong.

Where did you get that idea? I just gotta see! Stefanoni has a four year degree and worked as a lab tech in a police forensics labs and the quality of her work was so dismal she caused several real scientists to freak! That is indisputable.

it does not matter if there were a million male dna profiles on the bra clasp if Raffe cannot explain how his got there.

He doesn't have to, and wouldn't be able to, if there's no reason to think it got there because he touched it. That's the point here, you have to divorce yourself from the idea that because Stefanoni said it was there that meant he touched it, and not only that but in the context of the murder.

Again, if you're claiming that mixed DNA profile is proof Raffaele was in that room when Meredith was murdered, what about the other guys?

Again, if you're claiming that mixed DNA profile is proof Raffaele was in that room when Meredith was murdered, what about the other guys?

was Raffe having sex behind Knox's back with the victim, giving him the opportunity to touch her bra prior to the night of the murder? how would this guy even have the testosterone to make love to another woman given Knox's sex kitten ways?

One trick you guys use is you talk about 4 dna profiles on the bra clasp but you never mention one of those is Knox as confirmed by Raffie's DNA expert. the other one is probably the victim's boyfriend, who had an alibi that night and wasn't even in town. I wouldn't doubt if the 4th was Meredith's dna, or Rudy's, given he's the sexual aggressor in the murder.

I just can't see how anybody can believe raffe's dna on this bra unless he's guilty or this Stef babe planted it on there. why would she want to frame this Raffe? DId Raffe's rich doctor daddy reject her and this was payback?

Let's see here, you have Stefanoni's boss who'd be in a world of trouble if his lab was stuffing up DNA work, you have Mignini's buddy from the MoF case who thinks high RFU values mean blood and admitted after the humiliation of Stefanoni that perhaps Italian forensics were behind the times, and two hired by adversaries whose best interest was in backing the prosecution and never saw the actual data required to evaluate the work they just took everything Stefanoni said at face value.

Then there's all the ones who were completely free of any influences outside the integrity of their field who stringently protested, some of whom later came to realize that (and many other things) meant Amanda and Raffaele were innocent.

Punctuated by the report of Conti and Vecchiotti.

No, that's not it either. Where are you getting this stuff from, are you reading the cartwheel's thread or way back in the TJMK/PMF archives? Or are you getting this somewhere else?

If Amanda's DNA was actually on Meredith's bra, doncha think you'd have heard about it before this? Please!

Give me a link for this one and I'll decipher it for you, I forget what that was.
