From the New York Times
KABUL, Afghanistan — Eight soldiers with the American-led military coalition were killed Saturday, making it the bloodiest day this year for Western troops fighting here.

I am not sure whether they are seven or eight as in the link there is written 7.

Looks like the US efforts for winning the so-called "war-on-terror" in Afghanistan are, after 12 years and counting and with the withdrawal date approaching, not bearing much fruits.

Karzai seems to have understood this and apparently is shifting his strategy
.. a claim by Afghan president Hamid Karzai that the US was effectively colluding with the Taliban in maintaining violence to prolong America's presence in the country.

Added.
Nobody would care but.. Japan has always supported US "war on terror", despite I remember there were polls claiming that 80% of the Japanese people are actually against

So the fact people got killed in a war means that it's not bearing fruits?

The babble is intense!

The myth of a clean war continues...

Uh huh. What do you think the USA should have done after 9/11? Send strongly worded letters to Al Qaeda?

Nope, but the US could have simply given Al Qaeda $6 trillion to play nice, and still come out ahead compared to what it cost to fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And that $6 trillion is just the down payment. The true cost won't be knowable for years to come - and may never be fully accounted for. In 50 or 100 years time, when the great US empire has faded and the Middle East completes its fall into chaos, few will correctly pinpoint the decisions that precipitated those unintentional outcomes.

Of course the the correct decision would have been to track down, arrest, and prosecute the criminals responsible for 9/11. No unjustified wars ripping weak countries apart and leaving upwards of a million innocents dead. No sticking a knife into our own economy in the hope that cheap oil and propping up the military-industrial complex would make up for it. No creating a whole new generation of people who hate America!

That has absolutely nothing to do with the US war there... you have not shown causation at all... or compared how it was before the war. Do you know what life was like for women under the Taliban? Honestly the lack of thought you put into your posts is just mind boggling :boggled:

The situation was not ideal before the 2001 invasion, of course.
But being Afghanistan now the worst country on Earth for women, I hardly see how the invasion have improved things

That is one of the most naive things I have ever read.

We should give money to the group that just attacked us?

Not ideal? What a *********** joke

You're just making things up, you think that Afghanistan has these problems with the well-being of women because of the invasion? Here I see a sustained rise after the invasion for the human development index

And when you talk to people who actually know what they are talking about, you find out that women have political rights, serve in politics, have real jobs etc. Far less child marriage, suicide by immolation, death in childbirth, infant morality etc It's still horrible, but at least the aid organizations and education campaigns are working because the taliban are out of the way

You just don't have a clue what you are talking about.

The stupidity deepens! Reagan said that about the Nicaraguan contras... it's complete ********. Maybe keep that kind of crap on your facebook where it belongs? I don't get why a) people make that stuff up and b) people post it without fact-checking it, it's retarded.

Instead of foaming at the mouth you could provide a source for your claim. I found a "businessinsider" article linking to the description of a PBS documentary saying it referred to the Contras, but on the other hand serious articles saying it referred to the Afghan "freedom fighters". If you can provide evidence that it's wrongly attributed, I apologize, but it is on record that he said equally nice things about them as he did about the murderous Contra scum.

The point here being of course that you can't talk about the US-Afghanistan relationship and the Taliban pretending that history began on September 11, 2001.

PBS is serious and trustworthy. Opinion articles are not. If you type the phrase into google book search, all of the respectable-looking books say it was about the contras, while a few far left anti-war screeds say it was the Taliban. It's pretty bloody obvious what happened.

Oh really was he talking about today's taliban or the freedom fighters that eventually became the Northen Alliance and fought the Taliban? Do you even research things before you post/think/say them?

So what? You also can't pretend that everyone fighting the Russians in the 80s were evil people who became the taliban, which you clearly just tried to do, that picture isn't of the taliban, this is so stupid.

Joey - "They", being religious extremists armed by the US and others, first of all fought against the rather progressive government of Afghanistan in the 70s which sent the girls to school and didn't hide them in a sack. That government then begged the Soviet Union to help against the medieval hordes propped up by the US, Saudi Arabia and the usual suspects, which they did after some time, only to start the more serious armament and training and mercenary business (Bin Laden) which then finally "brought the Evil Empire down". And then the US went away and left the country to the hordes.

P.S.: I see that you aren't willing to provide evidence for your claim, so I will continue to use this quote as referring to the "Freedom fighters" if I see fit. And I see that you apparently aren't aware that this quote is as outrageous referring to the Contras as it is referring to the "freedom fighters".

Can you give any evidence that US support for the religious extremists came before the Soviet invasion?

Or that the Soviets were invited by the legitimate government of Afghanistan?

I've never heard either claim before. Thanks.

Sure. Because that's totally the intellectually honest thing to do: pretend that Reagan said the Taliban were freedom fighters, because it's useful.

ETA: Anyway, what was the point to begin with? Suppose that Reagan really did say that the Taliban in the 1980s was the analog to the founding fathers of the United States. So what? How is that relevant?

Fatuous, incorrect babble. So every rebel in the Afghan war was a religious extremist? If you really believe it was a progressive government I guess you really don't know anything about why hundreds of thousands of Afghans were willing to fight against that government and the US supporting them? You make it sound like everything was the fault of the US, Afghanistan was some kind of socialist paradise and that there would have been no war without the US it's ridiculous.

Do you actually subscribe to the fantasy that the CIA funded and trained bin laden? I don't even get where you think you're going with this. The US did not create bin laden, did not create the taliban, did not have contact with them, did not support them. The Pakistani ISI is who trained them. So your little picture and this little narrative is just ridiculous.

The decisions that were made and the consequences of them in Afghanistan is an interesting and important subject. Let's start with trying to get the basic facts straight first.

I can't imagine what could go wrong giving a terrorist organization $6 trillion. I'm sure they'd use it to build liberal arts schools and hospitals and roads and bridges and such.
