Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

He went to the police and cleared his name. The newspaper which published his picture printed a retraction. The posts on reddit which contained his picture have been deleted. Two suspects have been identified by the FBI, and neither of them are him.

If he's still in fear for his life, his fear is neither legitimate nor reasonable.

You think that magically undoes the harm done to him? You think there aren't people who will still hound him? That his name isn't out there for lunatics to find? A unicorn will fly out of your butt before this guys life ever gets back to normal.

The "aunt" mentioned a wife and daughter. I wonder if a domestic dispute triggered this?

Haven't seen anything else mention of the wife and daughter though.

Then maybe you need to shut up and not speak from ignorance. Just a friendly suggestion. :)
And deprive you of the opportunity to educate me? Perish the thought.

Awesome! So because Joe Ignorant on JREF doesn't know his name, he's good?

I wonder if any of the tens of thousands of the residents of his town know his name. I wonder if any of the kids he goes to school with know his name.

Unlikely, in your world?
In my world it's unlikely that anyone who knows his name thinks he's one of the two suspects identified by the FBI.

You don't live on planet Earth? Welcome stranger from afar. Do you breath oxygen?

Yes. Even if the "retraction" was printed in giant font on the front page of the Post, the way the original accusation and photograph were, that wouldn't make up for it.

There's a reason Richard Jewell sued this exact same tabloid, after all.

The only thing I've heard is that the wife was Christian, and Tamerlan was a stay-at-home dad while his wife worked. No idea as to the veracity of that, though.

Now you know how he feels, and why he should feel it.

Are you aware of the case of mistaken identity in the Casey Anthony case?

Not everybody is as with it as you're pretending to be.

Major US sports event bombed by terrorists; massive shootout in the middle of the night in Boston with grenades thrown at police and a dead suspect wearing an explosive vest. Entire city of Boston basically told to stay at home, all public transportation shut down. Why would any of this be considered important to National Public Radio?
Who said otherwise?

They can always break into programming when they actually have something to report. In fact, the solid information they have to report would take a matter of minutes, not all hours and hours. That's not what's happening.

What's going on now is the same as what followed 9/11. It's not doing the public any service to suspend regular programming in order to report every little unconfirmed thing as you hear it and to speculate for hours on end.

His name will show on internet search for a long time. He will have to answer questions about this all the time. And that not counting the racists and the conspiracists who won't believe in the media retractions, and will claim that "when there's smoke there's fire", and when we'll try to explain why he came up as a suspect, they won't understand/won't want to understand and admit it's an error like that. See the 9/11 conspiracy theories for so many example of that.

This is a huge pain in the ass, for anyone. Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up suing.

But it's expected nowadays, rightly or wrongly. They would get lambasted if they went on with regular programming.

Of course, nowadays, even weekly magazines have an online presence that happily takes part in the "news" spam. The website of SPIEGEL - what was once was, and in all fairness, occasionally still is, the pinnacle of investigative journalism in Germany - just informed me that "at least the policemen in Boston do not have to go hungry, since they ordered some Dunkin Donuts places to stay open".

a) who in the darkest sphincter of hell cares and
b) even if true, are those guys auto-stereotyping or what

Hmm, apparently it's not stereotyping, but reporting ...

Update - 11:50 a.m.: Dunkin' Donuts has released the following statement to BuzzFeed.

"At the direction of authorities, select Dunkin' Donuts restaurants in the Boston area are open to take care of the needs of law enforcement and first responders."

Many other worthwhile comments on the link :)

He'll earn street cred. It will be a great pickup line in bars. "Yeah, baby, I was the original marathon bomber suspect". Chicks dig the bad boy.

Dunkin Donuts is giving away food and drinks to law enforcement officers. I think it's great.

:D

I'd speculate that Dunkin' Donuts will get some sort of police commendation for staying open through this latest event and keeping the cops fueled up through the night.
Way better than a "police commendation", they'll get to be the only restaurant chain open in the entire area, with all the business.
