Continuation: Discussion of the George Zimmerman case

I guess I struck a nerve. Let's talk about other people from large cities whose parents are divorced.

Suri Cruise - Link

Karenna Gore - Link

Ron Reagan - Link

I've listed three kids above who are from big cities and have divorced parents, yet no one would describe any of them as "inner city youths from dysfunctional families". So what did TheL8Elvis mean? He meant "they don't have much in common with black kids".

Let's remember what started this all. TheL8Elvis said:

See? His kids probably know LOTS of kids whose parents have been divorced. We all do. (for that matter, half the kids in school smoke dope so they know plenty of those kids too). Yet no one describes their families as "dysfunctional" because of it. In fact, I'd say that Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton have a pretty amicable relationship because they stuck together through this horrible ordeal. In fact, they're the opposite of dysfunctional. They just got divorced. But to TheL8Elvis, being from divorced parents, from the suburbs, makes you an "inner city youth from a dysfunctional family" if you have some certain OTHER attribute that we can't mention in polite company.

And I'll leave it there because anyone who doesn't get that, never will.

ETA: I will add one more thing after all. If anyone here was from a dysfunctional family, it was George. He wasn't on speaking terms with members of his family and was accused of the rape of a cousin. That's what I call dysfunctional.

ETA2: And before someone chimes in and says "inner city is because of high crime". Let's remember that George's whole defense is that RTL is a "high crime" community which is why he needed to take up arms as the sheriff neighborhood watch captain. So George was from a high crime suburb, from a dysfunctional family, with a checkered past. Is George Zimmerman an "inner city youth"?

He didn't live with his mother or his father. That's normal ? Functional ?

And you didn't answer any of my questions.

He was from the suburbs before George murdered him. What makes him from the inner city?

Read carefully: City of Miami Gardens

in·ner cit·y
Noun
The area near the center of a city, esp. when associated with social and economic problems.

Unabogie,

Can you answer my questions so we can move on ? Unless the goal is to get the thread moderated by baiting me by implying I am a racist and stirring everyone up by turning everything into a race issue ? Because if that's the goal, it seems to be working.

And I never claimed you did. You have a difficult time reading fro content.
Except that I didn't say anything racist.
Witness 8 is a proven liar. The youtube video you linked to - that guy isn't a witness.
I'm really not sure who else you are referring to, so please spell it out for me - be specific.I believe it about as much as you believe GZ was.
Because I don't know who says "homie" these days?
Simply not true
And you bend everything he does, including not updating the address on his DL into proof he murdered someone.
I do ? Really ? What leads you to that conclusion ?Which action was that - be specific. Calling TM an "inner city youth" ? Is that not true ?
Who is THEY ? I certainly didn't claim "She must be an impostor!"
He didn't live with his mother or his father. That's normal ? Functional ?

Demographics don't decide what constitutes "inner city" and "suburb".

Geography does.

Martin wasn't from the inner city. He was from the suburbs.

Where within the city of Miami Gardens did Martin live? Was it near the "inner" portion?

The City of Miami Gardens was incorporated on May 13, 2003, as the 33rd city in Miami-Dade County. At a population of 105,457, it is the third largest city in Miami-Dade County (after Miami and Hialeah). The City is located in North-Central region of the county, mid-way between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, and is easily accessed by I-95, the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and the Florida Turnpike. The city comprises approximately 20 square miles.

Miami Gardens is a city, with its own inner-city area (based on the required geographical qualification that you have presented). The part(s) highlighted in yellow distinguishes it as a city separate from the city of Miami.

ETA: This is a fairly fruitless debate; what value is there if some sort of agreement could come of it?

Can I just make the point that it shouldn't matter at all where both George and Trayvon came from? It could be Mars for all that it matters. The question of the legality of lethal force does not hinge on the provenance of its victim.

I agree this issue is a distraction, but at the same time, IMO it's the reason why so many people are incapable of seeing the double standard they apply to the principals in this case.

Everything you can use to describe Trayvon as an "inner city youth" would apply to George or Shellie, or even people like Suri Cruise, except for their color.

"Inner city youth" is a euphemism for "young black male". So when people say that their kids have nothing in common with "inner city youths" - and therefore young black males - I consider that a momentary lapse into honesty. And it's an important clue when trying to decipher why there are such diametrically opposed ways of viewing the same evidence.

It's probably not productive, but racism is racism and I feel compelled to call it out.

The city of Sanford has social and economic problems. Is George from the inner city?

I don't think the RATL could be considered "an older part of a city, densely populated and usually deteriorating, inhabited mainly by poor, often minority, groups".

Maybe it was somewhat densely populated, and I believe it had a relatively high percentage of "minority groups" (IIRC).

If you want to use the geographic criteria johnnykarate set forth, judge for yourself. The city of Sanford's boundaries are outlined in pink; the RATL area is circled in red.

And this.

IMHO, applying the now-debunked "inner city youth" label to Trayvon is just another way to demonize him as a thug.

And, it appears that a certain Zimmerman supporter has been spanked around so hard in this thread that he's resorted to pasting definitions and arguing semantics. Sad, but kinda entertaining to watch.

Miami Gardens has a population of 100,000 people, the same as Santa Rosa, CA. I live in Portland, which has a population of 500,000 in the city proper, with 2 million in the greater metro.

Do I live in the inner city?

Do the people of Santa Rosa?

Or does inner city simply mean "where the black people live?"

Can you please shrink that image down and watch the size of the images you post? It wrecks the formatting of the page.

Definitely not productive. When you make the choice to assign the "racist" label to someone, especially on relatively weak evidence, you're essentially prejudging, and predetermining the source for all of a person's views or arguments, and are inclined to ignore any potential merit in those arguments based on that label.

Here's a video that I find relevant to this topic: Neil deGrasse Tyson: Atheist or Agnostic?

Especially the part from 0:19 to 1:00

I'm not sure how to do it. If you would like it resized, you may do that, and put it up on imugur.com, or another photo hosting website, or just put it in a new post as an attachment, and I will update it.

It's fine on my screen. I'm using a resolution of 1920x1080 (desktop computer), and the image is 937px × 654px

Edit: I'll just make it a link instead of an imbedded photo.

You've done this before and been told how it affects other users.

Not everyone has your desktop screen.

Courtesy, please.
