Bigfoot DNA

If people are smart enough and make enough money for their employers nutcaseness is often tolerated and/or overlooked.

That said, I know nothing about Sykes. All I'm saying is that just because he did something useful you shouldn't use that one fact to eliminate the possibility that he doesn't have quirks.

Why are you assuming that he is going to pronounce bigfoot exists? I seriously doubt bigfoot exists but it won't make a difference to me one way or the other if I'm ever proven to be wrong. If he finds anything interesting, that is all he will be able to say, he's not going to start flying the bigfoot freak flag just yet, if at all.

You ran the hypothetical of him validating the Ketchum thing and how you'd react. I was just following your lead and told you how I would react if he validated it.

Oh OK, so I assume since his previous research has been validated in a correct manner, that he will have this hypothetical interprtation verified before he makes any kind of announcement.

So despite the quality of science he would expend on this, you would reject the results if it didn't agree with your world view regarding bigfoot? How does that make you different from Mulder?

Only if he says that Bigfoot exists. He might say something like "I have no opinion on the existence of Bigfoot" or "Bigfoot may exist".

How does that make you different from Mulder?

We believe in opposite things.

Yup ~ I want proof he is legit on this BF stuff, his rep is good but so ain't so many other footers.

Tim :)

you guys need to settle down,
Sykes comes over here, he likes the USA, and I'm sure he's getting a free trip, either from the group, but more likely his publisher. I suspect his meeting will become a chapter in a book.

He will not talk about his stuff, he will save that for his book, I suspect he will intimate that perhaps Melba overreached, but in a gentle way.

He will not in any way verify her findings!

He does incredible reasearch and is considered to be a science "superstar" by most. He has a long established record of big time science, and he has not been afraid to tackle the tough questions, and at times questioned established ideas, - then produced the evidence that supported his ideas and counteracted the established norm. This guy completely changed the understanding of the settlement and migrations of humans across the face of the earth. He essentially Invented" (really simply uncovered and verified) that all europeans have 1 of seven linages (seven daughters of eve)
This guy is golden if you are a footer, assuming he says what you want him to say. However, because of his reputation, That he calls em how he sees em, and sees em backed by evidence and validation, he will be platinum for skeptics when he says sorry Melba!

If, against all odds, he comes back saying he agrees with Melba, I'm grabbing my gun and going hunting for bigfoot! Unfortunately, I will never get the chance to be the collector of the type specimen and discriptor of BF!

Some of you so called skeptics are awfully jittery on the trigger. You get all up in arms with the slightest hint that someone may say something contrary to your belief. seems to me i have seen that behavior before - somewhere in the deep recesses of my fogged brain! I can't recall exactly where i have seen that behavior - anyone help me with that?
CWB
BTW if you really want to know about Bryan, go out and get a copy of "the seven Daughters of Eve" it's an entertaining read and also a great intro to DNA technologies and how we use them. You can follow that up with DNA USA, a really fascinating look at what DNA reveals about america and americans! again a great way to start to understand the power of DNA.

He's often regarded as one of today's greatest geneticists. I think us footers are lucky to have him.

So Sykes is the new star now? Goodbye Melba, hello Brian...Who's gonna be the next one? Bigfootery is an endless story.

Happy Groundhog Day...

The Melba was on Coast to coast am earlier today. Wow. She is nothing if not the bare assertion queen. Scientist were so mean to her, bwahahaha, she had to buy the journal because everyone laughed at her and her paper.

She claimed anyone with press credentials can have a free copy.

That's all well and good but if Francis Collins can fall on his knees and accept Jesus Christ as his lord and savior after seeing a frozen triune waterfall, Bryan Sykes can all of a sudden accept footie foo-foo as real for some other cognitive bias. Or monetary issue. It's not out of the question.

I just don't see how he could do it without significant genetic evidence.

Of course if he has that evidence that's a different issue, but like others I really need to see the monkey. Which will be the name of my book when that happens.

Viewing The Monkey: A Skeptic Reconciles Bigfoot With Reality.

Until then . . .

Why does a person who claims to want to be accepted by mainstream science keep saying and doing things that alienates her from the community?

Past performance is no guarantee of future results.

Exactly. The Crank Hall of Fame is littered with folks who at one time in their careers were seen as legitimate, mainstream, etc. As far as I'm concerned, Sykes started at 1.5 strikes for getting involved in this silliness at all. By stepping in with his, "Hold on: I'll analyze for bigfoot samples myself" attitude, he's already pandered to the 'footers by providing them with affirmation of a controversy that exists only in their minds.

I've been suspicious of this guy from the get-go and, if anything, I'm waiting for him to do something that would help me see him in a more favorable light. This announcement isn't exactly what I had in mind.

Okay, gotta go: I don't want to miss the latest on the Dr. Oz show!

One hundred eleven samples of blood, tissue, hair, and other types of specimens were studied, characterized and hypothesized to be obtained from elusive hominins in North America commonly referred to as Sasquatch.

If you have 111 samples then this hypothetical creature isn't elusive.

If you have 111 eyewitnesses then this creature isn't elusive.

When you are seen regularly by people (including the main author) you are not elusive.

Oh and by the way, they aren't commonly referred to as Sasquatch. They are commonly referred to as Bigfoot and occasionally called Sasquatch.

Best part of ANY PAPER EVER:
"There are reports from witnesses who allegedly live in close proximity to, and interact with, Sasquatch family units ; however, in the absence of additional evidence, most of these reports have been dismissed. These witnesses and other eyewitnesses further report that the Sasquatch also build stick structures in the forests, some of which are thought to be shelters while others have unknown meanings. "

Translation:
There are kooks, who think Bigfoot lives in their backyard, whole families of Bigfoots. However, since they are reported by kooks, there is no evidence of their existence, and the people are considered kook-jobs. These nutters, also report that the Bigfoots are building stick structures, which resemble other common things that kids or hunters build in the woods.
