Cylindrical UFO videotaped by Kentucky Amateur Astronomer

How does the guy know what altitude it was at if it was a perfectly clear sky with no other objects around it to guage the distance? I think it's a well established fact that humans suck at being able to actually tell how far away or close something is in those conditions...

That is just nonsensical.

I wonder if this isn't another of those videos filming the reflection of a light bulb, florescent in this case, through a window?

Depends on who you ask and how much helium the balloon has in it. But I think that "pretty high up" would just about cover it, much higher up than what he's got there.

If you assume that you're looking at a balloon at 1000 meters, and not an alien spacecraft at 10 km, that is.

Yes, I wondered that too. I think it is too easy for a brain to say, "hmm.. looks kind of like the size of an airplane contrail, therefore it must be at the altitude of contrails" or some similar not very good logic.

Does anyone know how he could possibly have known it was "above airliner cruising altitude" if there was nothing else to measure against?

The response is,

He probably figured that since he had to use a telescope to video the object it was pretty high up. The article didn't say how powerful his telescope was, so it's left up to him to determine the height. I'm not going to question his judgement.

What about the size of the object?

When I first saw it, I thought the same thing. But the article said "Several eyewitnesses in different areas of eastern Kentucky reported seeing a strange, cylindrical UFO hover for two hours in clear skies last week,.. "

so, I don't think it's possible for several people in different areas to see the same light bulb reflection or lens flare.

I'll bet it's a version of a solar balloon made from clear polythene bags rather than the more traditional grey garbage bags (trash bags, to you 'mericans)

so, I don't think it's possible for several people in different areas to see the same light bulb reflection or lens flare.

But it is possible for someone to hear these claims and then hoax a similar video.

Can we say for certain this was filmed at the same time as the other reports?

I tend to lean toward Akhenaten's balloon explanation, though. That does seem to look quite similar.
