Antisemitism and The Goy

It actually makes me sad to read this. Is there some specific condition that makes one unable to understand the "outgroup" dynamic from one culture and apply it to another? Is it the same condition that fails to understand simple analogies about 9/11 and building collapse? Is this why the racist political parties still poll well enough to hang around? CM needs a passport or a TV or something.

As someone once said "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."

Ought to hear Salvadorans talk about Hondurans, and vice versa.

Same with Dominicans and Haitians.

Every asian national v. Japanese.

This thread should be stickied. Or possibly framed. It's beautiful.

.

Actually you are both a bit off. While term 'Semite' applies to anyone whose ethnic group speaks (or spoke) a Semitic language the term Anti-Semitic was, as TSR spelled out, invented by people who hated Jews against Jews and has been used to describe hatred of Jews ever since.

AS i Have said nothing hard or factual, jsut discussions I have with theologians I know who argue that it covers both.

If any of them are about or I am we gnerally have a chat about matters over a few pints at the Dolphin tavern in Bloomsbury on an occaisional Sunday

At first I thought the title of the thread said, "Antisemitism and The Gay".

Why are the Jews the only people, that I know of, who have a derogatory word for people who are not Jewish? Goy
Lots of groups have terms for outsiders, its a phenomenon called "othering", dividing people into "us" and "them", in-group and out-group. Sometimes the terms are derogatory, like "Goy", sometimes they are not, like "Gentile".

Among Christians, "heathen" is a derogatory term for non-Christian, "pagan" usually has a more neutral meaning.

The phenomenon of labeling outsiders occurs in all groups across the whole of history.

Why are the Jews the only people, that I know of, who have a word for people who supposedly hate them? antisemitic
It's historical: long long history of Anti-Jewish prejudice among Christians who regarded them as killers of Christ, practiced usury (loaning money on interest), and worked on the Sabbath.

What is the purpose of these two unique words?
Imprinting of Jewish bigotry?
Seems like a purposeful intent toward conspiratorial exclusivity.
Seems presumptuous, lacking parsimony. What makes you think there's a worldwide Jewish conspiracy instead of just a holdover from historical prejudice?

Darn, all my insults were taken before I could use them what was sure to have been a Pith winner.

Too often the pompous accusation of antisemitism is used to discredit a persons view.

So how many words do you have for people who aren't in your group? Because I'm guessing it's more than just the word "Jew" muttered as an invective.

It's not used to discredit the view. It's used to point out that the views expressed are those of someone who dislikes Jews.

The discrediting of the views comes through a display of ignorance and misunderstanding of the subject.

And, of course, the genius who started this thread is nowhere to be found...

:scared:

"I'm not racist or anything, but those Jews sure are shifty and suspicious".

Absolutely, I mean, some of my best friends are Jews, well, I say some... you can't always tell, but one at least... can't stand him, anyway, where was I? Have you ever noticed how they regard outsiders with suspicion? As if we're all shifty or something!

subtle point, learning about other people is a good, useful thing to do. Pretty much every culture has a word/words for "not us" (I suspect every culture, but I am not that good at it)....
