The whole anti-islam agenda consists of cherry-picking...

You do know Rumsfeld lied about the al Qaeda high tech city/fortress in a mountain to justify a war don't you? You do know many thousands of our precious soldiers were killed/maimed as a result of that war don't you?

Are you trying to say bin Laden wasn't hanging with the Taliban, regardless of your favorite batcave pic?

Well, I'm pretty certain you weren't one of them.

The Power of Nightmares, subtitled The Rise of the Politics of Fear, is a BBC documentary film series, written and produced by Adam Curtis. The series consists of three one-hour films, consisting mostly of a montage of archive footage with Curtis’s narration, which were first broadcast in the United Kingdom in late 2004 and have been subsequently aired in multiple countries and shown in several film festivals, including the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.

The films compare the rise of the American Neo-Conservative movement and the radical Islamist movement, making comparisons on their origins and noting strong similarities between the two. More controversially, it argues that the threat of radical Islamism as a massive, sinister organised force of destruction, specifically in the form of al-Qaeda, is in fact a myth perpetrated by politicians in many countries—and particularly American Neo-Conservatives—in an attempt to unite and inspire their people following the failure of earlier, more utopian ideologies. Episodes included: Baby It’s Cold Outside, The Phantom Victory and The Shadows in the Cave.

You gotta love it when another Western country, not the US, bad mouths neocons who are Unknown, Ununderstood, and Unidentified in the USA.

Let's look at the part you bolded:

"More controversially, it argues that the threat of radical Islamism as a massive, sinister organised force of destruction, specifically in the form of al-Qaeda, is in fact a myth perpetrated by politicians in many countries—and particularly American Neo-Conservatives—in"

I would quite agree that the actual al Qaeda is neither massive nor organised.

Would you agree that "Al Qaeda" is a an overall term for a number of small cells and/or individuals (including one that actually operates under that name) with terrorist intentions?

Yes and possibly. The hitch or fly in the ointment is that any of these known individuals have to communicate within a network to get things done, to buy things, to pay and get paid.

I can see my car in my driveway on google. How can terrorist military avoid detection with drones zipping around and eavesdropping tech?

Case in point. bin Laden. Who was paying him? Was he communicating with cells? Wasn't it odd that this former CIA helper was a Saudi and wound up in ally Pakistan? Why wouldn't bin Laden go to an enemy of the US?

Plus, if anyone was really aligned with bin Laden where is the roundup of the contacts necessary for his and his immediate family's maintenance.

And this assassination crap. Killing al Qaeda leaders? Certainly they can be arrested.

So what is the going rate of pay for armed militiamen in a terrorist cell?

So your saying bin Laden wasn't in Afghanistan? Or any other members of the al Qaeda posse? You know, the same group that just crashed some planes in the U.S.?

No. I'm saying

It's more than likely al Qaeda is a CIA fabrication.

Everyone has to do that. I have to communicate to buy stuff, pay and get paid. Using the phrase "communitate within a network" just gives the false impression these simple interactions conceal a sinister, super-competent organisation lurking behind the scenes.

I can see my car in my driveway on google. How can terrorist military avoid detection with drones zipping around and eavesdropping tech?
You can see hundreds of millions of cars on Google. Which ones belong to the baddies?

Case in point. bin Laden. Who was paying him?
He was rich. He was paying for others.

Pakistan was and is a US ally where their interests coincide. That doesn't mean that Pakistan is a monolithic entity with a single intent, nor that it wants to be America's friend and do whatever it can to please the US. Pakistan's concerns include a large and fairly hostile neighbour to the south, and the even larger Russians (and formerly the Soviets) to the North with poor benighted Afghanistan as a buffer in between. The Pakistani secret service have been deeply involved in Afghanistan for many years, and not in ways which would please either the Afghan or US governments. Bin Laden was probably safer, more comfortable and more secure on the Pakistani side of the border than in Afghanistan itself.

And this assassination crap. Killing al Qaeda leaders? Certainly they can be arrested.
You reckon? Who's going to do that?

I don't see the hitch. The individuals may or may not be known. They may or may not communicate with other groups or individuals. But they still follow the general principles of al Qaeda, and may read their directives. Do you agree?

I take it you've never been to central asia. How does this follow from my question? Plus, they move around a lot. That's why there's still a war in Afghanistan.

Case in point. bin Laden. Who was paying him? Was he communicating with cells? Wasn't it odd that this former CIA helper was a Saudi and wound up in ally Pakistan? Why wouldn't bin Laden go to an enemy of the US?

He was paid by terrorist sympathisers. Plus, he was rich.

Er, those countries all speak variations of Arabic.

Pakistan is a highly populated country. By no means is all of the country sympathetic to the US. And again, that part of the world is mountainous and hard to govern.

Plus, if anyone was really aligned with bin Laden where is the roundup of the contacts necessary for his and his immediate family's maintenance.

Have you missed most of the top headlines of the war on terror for the past 11 years? Google "al qaeda financiers".

And this assassination crap. Killing al Qaeda leaders? Certainly they can be arrested.

Many of them have been. Again, Google "al quaeda leader arrested".

Cheers.

No, it really isn't. It's waaaay more likely that "Al Quaeda" is a buzzword that caught on in Western politics and news media as a name for islamic terrorists and soon became the name any would-be terrorists adopted or allied themselves to.

This is the, "the mafia is a myth" idea right? I mean, come on, it's just criminals all acting in their own self interests with only a loose command structure and no overarching centralized control.

Pretty much, yeah.

Mind you, I've come across CTists who won't even admit that terrorism seems to exist. I think we're getting somewhere with Clayton.

Disclaimer: I AM an optimist.
