Trayvon Martin, Vigilante Justice

So by the time Angela Corey took over the case, was the investigation complete or not?

Which investigation?

SPD's initial regular one was certainly over.

Since the SA called in the FDLE for help on March 16, I would say the SA's investigation was still ongoing.

If we allow 1 week for SPD to complete the initial investigation, 1 week for the SA to work on that report, a few more days for SPD to review their initial investigation at SA request, we are probably right at the time when SA asked for help from FDLE around the 16th.

I spent the last 4 years in and out medical treatments for a spinal injury. I didn't follow the Knox case because I wasn't that functional. From the little I did grasp, it was a perfect storm of police incompetance and a sensationalistic media rush to judgement. Ya know, kinda like this case. :)

Other than grief and media fuled sense of outrage, I don't know what motivated the Kerchers. Having never had children, I'll never know the pain of losing one. (I hate that word, would someone please offer me an alternative? When your child dies, you don't "lose" them)

I see the Martins reaching out for some peace. They want to set up a foundation to do whatever possible to keep this kind of thing from happening again. I believe they are caught up in some of the whirlwind surrounding this case and they are emotionaly and mentally vulnerable. If, in 4 years, I hear them carrying on about how justice wasn't served, the jury was wrong, the judge was wrong, stalking GZ or harrassing his family, I'll reconsider. I think the Martins are the only ones out there who haven't spoken ill of GZ or his family.

Grief does very powerful things. It wrenches reason and balance out from under the mind. The support system goes into overload and people say and do hurtful things to themselves and their loved ones. My father died 6 months after I got married. On the day of his burial, I said some horrible hateful things to my husband. Sarcastic, biting comments that came out of nowhere. He's a wonderful man so we're still married, 16 years later. :D It doesn't always turn out that way. I got to deal with my grief in a private way.

The Martins don't have that courtesy. Do you honestly think they'd rather have the limelight right now than their son? Yes, he had a couple of behavioural issues that both parents had to deal with. None of it that bad, though suspension is never a good thing. No idea about the alledged incident concerning the bus driver, the jewelry thing is still full of holes that need to be filled in, or maybe not, the spraying grafitti on the lockers, yep, some issues but I doubt he was headed to jail.

Katie, let me just leave forum mode for a minute and say I found your post very touching. I hope "in and out" for four years means you are "out" and your back is OK now. I went down to Houston six weeks ago and buried my mother, and personal experience tells me that grief is very much like a serious back injury in that it invokes a feeling of helplessness with no clear end in sight. We can talk about the rest of this stuff later.

Thanks GWCarver :) My spine looks like a mosaic with nothing holding the pieces together. Then this bizarre thing called disruption of the inner costal nerve band. Related to shingles. So spinal surgery to fix what they could, nerve block injections for the pain, some drugs to kill the pain without stealing my life from me and medical marijuana. I have a horse I can't ride, dogs I can't show and a professional life unfinished. All very depressing, and yes, a lot of grief involved.

I did not mean to imply you had never suffered grief. Every person does at some point. I've missed my father every day of the 15 years since he died but he had cancer and we knew it was coming. Didn't make it easier but you sort of expect a parent to die. My SiL's father was killed by a drunk driver. We've discussed it often enough that we know neither way is easy. I nearly went mad watching my father waste away and being in so much pain he barely recognized us.

From those who've suffered through it, I've learned you never get over the death of a child. No matter the cause, parents aren't supposed to bury their children. Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin are dealing with this tragedy the best way they can right now. They're probably still in shock. Until the hordes of media and AS and JJ move on to the next "cause", I doubt they're getting much time to breathe, much less grieve. I could tear up easily at thought of the two of them, sitting in a strange motel room, looking at each other and wondering how the hell they got there. Sometimes, my imagination is a little too vivid for my own good.

Reponse to Gun Range Targets

We have had numerous media requests asking us to respond to reports that an unidentified person has produced a gun range target meant to represent Trayvon Martin. We feel we must go on record as stating that we unequivocally find this appalling and disgusting in every regard. It is an insult to the Martin family, it inflames the already heated social tension surrounding the George Zimmerman case, and it represents an irresponsible approach to gun ownership. It is this type of hatred that will make it more difficult to try this case.

The targets were reportedly sold at GunBroker.com, a popular auction site. They look to be a fairly cheap cut-n-paste addition to a otherwise standard tactical target.

Let's just say after four years of watching the Kerchers having Maresca persecute the innocent Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollicito, I have a very clear picture of what is going on here.

So, let me ask you a question. Keeping in mind it is entirely possible this case could go on for four years and end up with Zimmerman being found not guilty, do you think the Kerchers grief justified what they did to Knox and Sollicito?
Might as well ask the same question about Emmett Till or the Rosenbergs.

This is not relevant, this is not an Italiano case and not in the Italiano system, Corte d'Assise. We do not have magistrates in the US who have the same powers as they do in bella Italia. The mistakes and prejudicial bias of the magistratto Italiano are not going to happen in the adversarial US system of justice.

The comparison has been made but it is irrelevant.

What I find interesting about this is it seems to be at odds with statements like the following:

On one hand, the Sanford PD did a thorough and adequate investigation.

On the other hand, the investigation was still ongoing.

So how can an investigation be thorough and adequate, but also incomplete?

You know JK, you have made a series of ignorant posts that have been matched by an equally ignorant posts from other people.

This however rises to a level of such gross ignorance that it truly sets a bar for ignorance or will full baiting and trolling.

If you really think that forensic analysis is something that is done by one set of investigators at the SPD and that it would be completed within a month, then you truly are ignorant.

How long does a coroner's examination and inquest take? How long does forensic analysis of the crime scene take? Are you basing you statements upon the fantasy of TV shows where every lab is open to rushing samples for the benefit of the noble investigator? What kind of backlog do you think that the Florida and federal crime labs have?

So you think that the SPD has a magic InvestigatoTM portable lab that just gives them ballistics, powder burns, forensic data analysis and a coroner's investigation with expert analysis?

I generally like your posting style, but this is ridiculous.

Again, this is ridiculous, investigation, especially detailed examination can take six months. I mean really a crime lab that has hundreds of samples and hundreds of items to examine is going to just drop the lists and jump on this?

I mean do you have any idea how many rape kits are sitting on shelves unanalyzed?

Not any specific poster in mind, it's just part of the meme. Close the investigation too soon and you let a killer off. Do a complete investigation and you're dragging your feet. Whatever it is, it's gonna fit the template. If it doesn't fit the template, it can be ignored, edited or Golden Ear-ed till it fits nicely.

How long did it take the Orlando state's attorney to charge in the FSU hazing deaths?

The FAMU hazings were kept quiet for decades, this latest incident is just the tip of the iceberg.

And issues a magic warrant that lets them drop their microscopes and run around kicking in random doors across several jurisdictions until they figure out what they are looking for.

I need to know something. Are you in charge of this forum and the final arbiter of all that is relevant?

My doctor actually has a machine that pumps pain medication directly into the base of her spine, at least that is my understanding of what she described to me. However, it probably works better if all parts of your spine are actually contiguous. :)

I won't ever disagree that there is an enormous amount of grief associated with the loss of a loved one, and that would certainly be much, much worse if that loved one was your child. I really can't even imagine it, and my wife, who is fragile on the best of days, could not deal with it at all.

I think you have made some good points here, and I will try to restrict my future criticisms of the civil battle to Crump, Sharpton, Jackson, etc. I also think it is inspirational to see you dealing with so much adversity while keeping your wits about you and your sense of humor intact.

Close the investigation too soon and you let a killer off. Do a complete investigation and you're dragging your feet.

Actually, it was the opposite phenomenon upon which I was commenting. When defending the Sanford PD, it was a thorough and adequate investigation above reproach. When criticizing Angela Corey, she unfairly swooped in before the Sanford PD had a chance to dot the i's and cross the t's.

It seems that some people are trying to have it both ways. The former is the standard position. Unless any shortcomings come to light. Then just simply claim the latter.

I'm sorry if this point was lost on anyone, but I do find it quite entertaiing that after another poster so recently proclaimed grieving parents to be "fair game" it's my post that elicited such outrage.
