Rudd resigns as foreign minister

There will be a government by then. Despite the sound and fury in the press, the govt is in government, and they want to stay there. Their policies beat the Abbott policies by a mile. Not hard to do when you consider all he wants to do is undo everything they have done. The NBN is a good example. Despite the demands to pull it apart, everyone wants to know when it will implemented where they live.
I so hope you're right.

That's the saddest thing for me - PM Gillard is actually doing a pretty damn good job, all things considered. She'll go, either at the next election or she *might* resign beforehand, and we'll be left with Abbott or some other dingbat running the show.

But, you know, she's a *woman*, and we can't have a woman successfully running the country donchyaknow - thats why the press always refer to her as "Gillard" or "Ju-liar" or whatever. Even Abbott seems a bit peaved by all of it, and quite deliberately calls her "Prime Minister Gillard" or just "Prime Minister" when being interviewed.

But yes, Labor's woes are deeper than that - they alienated their core and pretty much turned into a Liberal-lite.

I've said it before, but Labor's traditional core voters, blue collar workers, are now either well off or aspire to be. Labor has to go after voters in Western Sydney, who have turned against them. If they don't make headway in places like that, they will be in opposition for a long time. They won't win back inner urbanites, who have left them for the Greens (I know preferences get to Labor, but I'll bet there will be several Lower House Greens next election, heaven help us). They have to compete with the Libs on their terms, not Labor's.

Another thing which scares me is the emergence of the Greens as a legitimate third party. This can only lead to instability and silly coalitions, like the one in England now.

I could just about agree with this. The problems the Government has are very old ones that have been dragged up now. Though what has she achieved or attempted to achieve since she became PM? My answers
- NBN is going strong.
- Carbon tax is going to happen (though she killed it off before the last election, which was very bad).
- Economy is going better than most other countries. Though maybe that could be just because China is still importing our stuff.
- We have a date for withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan. Though that may be because of what other countries are doing.

What else?

I would have preferred a few more answers, like gay marriages.

The Carbon Tax, which is really a Carbon Pricing scheme, will start soon. There will be at least a year for people to realise the world isn't ending, and that Abbott has been doing his usual hysteria, hatred and fear lies.

It's as if one of them has carked it but the other one's still waving his cane on the porch and feebly yelling, "Worst PM ever!" to no effect whatsoever.

Anyway, why is this thread still alive? I think we should start a new thread about the latest budget.

Feel free to start a new topic on the budget. Bit odd that there is not one already.
