Guy Builds Star Trek Phaser

Wow, a "phaser" that can pop a balloon and a beam that can only be seen in a smoke filled room. Lame.

How is this "lame"? It never occurred to me to do this, and while it's little more than a baby step towards something more potent, (though what I'd do with anything more powerful), it does carry a degree of risk. Sure, it's not a huge deal, but it's a pretty interesting bit of work.

Are you kidding. Take that to the carnival and give all the kiddies a rude surprise*

*And get a concession as the balloon vendor.

If you ever beam down to a planet of homicidal balloons, that's the weapon you want in your holster.

(Or a pin). :balloon:

It's not even a baby step.

What did this guy actually do here? He took the laser out of a Blu-Ray machine. Obviously the laser was already capable of emitting a beam powerful enough to pop balloons; and there are already handheld pointer lasers available that can do the same thing. And any laser beam becomes visible in a smoky room. So what's left? He mounted it on a toy gun handle. Oooh, bask in the innovation.

C'mon.

Meh, take your space-walking buttocks and go rain on some other parade. This is my parade, and I'm happy to have little bits of colored paper and inflated rubber go up in flames from a distance using self-contained light emitter in the shape of a 2nd rate scifi television series ray gun as the only source.

I like it. I like it. I like it!

I'm impressed, and giddy, and thrilled to see something like this.

So meh on you. :p

Don't speculate guys. Register on LaserPointerForums (link above) and enjoy laser making.
Btw. of course it's not infrared, how could it look blue ? It's 445nm semiconductor laser diode, around 1W power. Such diodes comes under $50 these days.
Also .. don't buy from Wicked Lasers. They are expansive, not up to specs, with poor customer support and usually very long shipping times. Go to the forums 'sell and buy' section and find yourself kit or finished build from forum members.
Also the video is stolen (copied without reference or authorization). Author's nick on LPF is Jayrob, and yes, he does build great lasers. Spread the news.

I officially plan to use a portion of my not too distant retirement time to do these.

This.

Seriously, I'm getting a little sick of this attitude of some: "Not much of an achievement, so I'll just take a quick **** on it."

Please.

New "stand your ground" law?

Hopefully the regular one will hang around * - but since I don't plan to do a (if he did and he probably did, but...) zimmerman I do not plan to have the problems doing a zimmermann caused him.

* In many states, to defend yourself with deadly or maiming force (the only kind that works normally) you had to retreat to the point where no furthur retreat was possible or run away. Using time to do either of those can tire you making you less able to aim straight orstab/slash as hard, if at all (depending on your condition) and, put you in a less good defense position. I do not want the hassle of having to waste my time being involved in a trial so I want a law that says if I have a REASONABLE (a key point and one that NO DA should be able to tamper with) reason to believe my life/health OR that of another is endangered I have a right to defend myself with any force necessary including deadly - without trying to run (and get backshot) or back into a place I cannot maneuver in.

Actually, infrared does show up as that bluey-violet colour on my phone camera. I use it when checking fibreoptic connections to quickly identify transmit and receive fibres.

The sensors in digital cameras react to near infrared so they need to filter it out. If the filter's removed or the IR is intense enough, it shows up.
