There's no winning this one, haze. Really. I'm very familiar with climate and Earth system science. I subscribe to and follow the journals. I read textbooks. I attend conferences. The claims that this instructor made are not substantiated by science. You won't find them in any real journal. You don't find them in any real textbook. You won't find them in any real conference (no, Heartland conferences don't count). It's that simple. He's that wrong. And you are too, if you defend him.

It's nice that you are praising your self, because I won't. The reason is that your responses, for the most part, don't merit praise. I'm sure they are made in earnest. But take a look at my critiques of them, and I'd be interested in your comments.

At the end, your argument isn't very defensible. You don't really have a scientific hypothesis here that precisely defines the problem and then address it, do you? So this is sort of an...unscientific statement?

I'd caution against that sort of theorizing on a number of grounds and agree with Harris on this.

I attended a number of interesting lectures regarding the the impacts of climate change and atmospheric CO2 at the recent Fall AGU meeting. The contention that "CO2 is plant food" was absent. And there's a reason. And had I tried to comment on any of these lecture with such a silly meme I'd have been laughed out of the hall.

Every textbook affirms it. All major, high-impact, multidisciplinary journals are filled with articles that affirm it. Entire journals are dedicated to it. High volume journals (e.g., GRL) affirm it on a nearly daily basis. As does every national academy of science in the world. And just about every serious, scientific organization.

There are no qualifiers here. There is no context. The consensus is complete. It's extensive. It's severe.

The deep solar minimum was concurrent with the warmest year on record. The current energy imbalance from increased CO2 exceeds the decreased radiant forcing from decreased solar activity. And that's why global mean temperature has continued to increase-- even if at a slower rate as solar activity plunged to historically low records. That's why ice has continued to melt-- look at GRACE satellite data and try to conceptualize just how much ice is melting. That's why the biosphere is migrating poleward. That's why sea level continues to rise-- despite the temporary decrease from the ridiculously extreme intensification of the hydraulic cycle over during 2010.

No one who is familiar with the data can honestly claim that Earth is not warming. That's why the scientific consensus is so high.

I can list a number of papers off the top of my head that have quantified and computed the global energy imbalance (I'm guessing you can find many for free download through google scholar). The wonderful thing, haze, is that an energy imbalance makes a prediction about future change. When Hansen indicated the Earth was out of energy balance decades ago, his contention would have been demonstrably wrong had Earth failed to warm. But it did warm. It also warmed when Trenberth calculated Earth's global energy budget. And it's warmed when all others did as well. Warming isn't just consistent with the energy imbalance calculations. Warming confirms prior imbalance.

That all being said, as I responded in a previous post, we can't know anything with 100% certainty. Of course, you attacked that part of my response, indicating that it demonstrated that I wasn't really countering Harris' claim. And that was a disingenuous response, just as is your facetious request for the requisite language of scientific uncertainty. Shame on you. Really.

Not wild claims at all, haze. I know how IPCC drew its conclusions. It's common knowledge. That, and a lead author lectured on it at the AGU fall meeting. I understand the basic concepts from reading multiple Earth system science textbooks. And from attending multiple lectures concerning climate change and extreme events. And empirical data on extreme hydrological events? Multiple papers. Seriously. There's been half a dozen or so in GRL alone over the past year. And multiple presentations at AGU. Rain gauges measure it. Satellite data measure it. Stream gauge data measure it.

I didn't mention tropical cyclones, but since you did, I'd love to help your understanding. Tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic basin has indeed increased substantially. Maximum power dissipation here has been well correlated with higher SSTs and potential intensity. While there's still some real scientific uncertainty here, Emanuel argues the SSTs are less important than the temperature divergence between the lower troposphere and stratosphere. The beautiful power dissipation and SST correlations are only found in the Atlantic basin. For now.

1. WUWT is crap. Seriously. If you find this interesting, please do yourself a favor and read an Earth system science textbook, and then subscribe to some accessible journals, e.g., Nature or Science.

2. The article cites a "paper" that was presented at the EGU. Follow the link, and it appears to be a poster. Conference posters are not well scrutinized. The idea behind the poster session is that works-in-progress can be vetted with peers before papers are written and published. The poster is interesting. What's most interesting is that while these folks write in their very poster that, "Because of strong climate variability, records of less than 30 years are almost certainly too short for detection of systematic trends. A minimum of 50 years of records is necessary for trend detection...", they actually calculate a trend from 1970 to 2000. More importantly, though, is that by cropping all datasets less than 50 years old, they introduce bias against modern data-- all datasets started after 1950 are discarded by their rules. They refer to their database as a "...World Catalog...", but over 80% of their data are from either North America or Europe. South America is represented by only 1 dataset. Even more interestingly, it turns out that this poster was affiliated with an engineering department-- the same department that has "published" such wonderful material as "Climate is changing ... since 4.5 billion years ago, Climate change: natural or human-induced," and "God and the arrogant species: Contrasting nature's intrinsic uncertainty with our climate simulating supercomputers." Predictably, there's author overlap.

3. The article shows a graph depicting trends in the strongest tornadoes. I'm not sure why. There is no clear consensus that climate change will increase or decrease the strongest tornadoes. There's no clear consensus how climate change will impact tornadoes.

4. The article shows a graph of global tropical cyclone activity. I'm not sure why. The interesting stuff is in the Atlantic Basin.

As to the issue of increased CO2 and temperature resulting in greater growth for some plants, this generally only occurs in conjunction with a 100% increase in water use and a nearly 60% increase in phosphorous and nitrogenous (actual plant foods and fertilizers) supplements (not to mention enhanced root oxygen requirements). Which is perfectly in accord with my incorrect, misleading and in rejection of mainstream science understandings statement.

Actually, the request was for a valid, scientific argument, but I would actually be quite pleased to receive a scientific argument regardless of the validity (to be determined upon examination).

A scientific argument must persuade the reader that the data you present, and your arguments are strong enough, to support your theory, model, or proposed action. Doesn't matter, does it? Water is poison. Yes, in certain circumstances. Too much or 18 Mohm. You've not refuted the statement. And you certainly can go to other conferences where there are serious and scientific discussions about lateral flow in greenhouses of enhanced CO2. It is unlikely that many of the tomatoes you get were produced in other than such an environment. You've tried to argue "But other things affect plant growth". That's not a refutation of the claim, but a detailing and elaboration of it. That constitutes agreeing with the basic claim.

Right. You could have just stated that you were wrong to previously maintain absolute certainty. That's simpler. Oh, and I guess you realize I've already noted your being wrong about the possibility of global cooling based on the possibility of the Sun going dormant? Good. Well, GREAT! You got caught on your wild absolute statements of belief, so now you're starting to talk rationally. More scientifically. By the way, don't lecture me on what "Emanuel says" when any meteorology student could immediately state that.

Now let's look at the specific issue, the quote by Harris. I noted the logical error you and a number of others have made is the meta-meta-generalization. This is obvious in the term "extreme weather event". And in how it might be defined, and over what time periods. Basically, as far as science goes, this is junk science. I'm not opposed to your going to a specific defensible subject. You've narrowed your scope down to (Atlantic, cyclones, time period, etc).

Just for fun, let's look at some more of the "Responses" of the "Report".

RESPONSE: This is untrue. The Amazon Rainforest has been geographically coherent for around 55 million years​

From Wikipedia. The rain forest has been in existence for at least 55 million years, and most of the region remained free of savanna-type biomes at least until the current ice age, when the climate was drier and savanna more widespread.

??? The Response uses the term "geographically coherent". Unfortunately, the Claim was concerning the Amazon jungle. Reframing, misdirection.

Harris gets this one on the facts.

Claim 84. (Referring to bills before the US senate) ‚They’re always calling it CO2 pollution. Global warming pollution. Well, it’s not OK. Well, the RESPONSE gets this one right (after a paragraph of blather). Which simply means that the Claim is not refuted.

RESPONSE: The 450ppm CO2 level corresponds to the IPCC estimate of the level to which CO2 would have to be limited in order to restrict warming below 2.1 degrees C. Harris might not care, but there are going to be a lot of people suffering if this kind of warming occurs...​

The Claim is not refuted and is irrefutable, as it's explictly a statement of personal feelings about a matter. Thus the "Response" only suggests what the "politically correct" statement of personal feelings should be.

Neither the claim or the response falls into a scientific argument category.

The authors argue that (i) there are many ways to calculate an average and that some methods lead to negative trends while others lead to positive trends, and (ii) a ‚global‛ temperature is not physically meaningful because the earth is not in equilibrium.....While the calculation of a global temperature is not straightforward, it is not as problematic as those authors make out and it is still informative in terms of indicating the Earth’s overall energy balance.

The bolded part shows where the writers do not understand energy balance. Planetary energy balance is the item that can be calculated, and global temperature does not show that and confuses the issue, plus is totally useless, given the heat capacities of various sinks in the system.

Harris has raised a provocative point here, and the writers of the Report frankly do not seem to understand it. Harris was noted earlier to be a mechanical engineer. An "earth scientist" would not want to debate thermal equilibrium and temperature with a mechanical engineer. :)

I wouldn't assign a "win" to either side on this point, but rather would note that if students heard this issue they would learn a great deal.

Well, which is it? No evidence or some evidence? These guys should make up their minds. Let's go with the "if they can" since the CERN CLOUD experiments proved that.

The broader claim is concerning NET EFFECTS. There is controversy on that issue and some unsettled questions.

Not wild claims at all, haze. I know how IPCC drew its conclusions. It's common knowledge. That, and a lead author lectured on it at the AGU fall meeting. I understand the basic concepts from reading multiple Earth system science textbooks. And from attending multiple lectures concerning climate change and extreme events. And empirical data on extreme hydrological events? Multiple papers. Seriously. There's been half a dozen or so in GRL alone over the past year. And multiple presentations at AGU. Rain gauges measure it. Satellite data measure it. Stream gauge data measure it.

I didn't mention tropical cyclones, but since you did, I'd love to help your understanding. Tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic basin has indeed increased substantially. Maximum power dissipation here has been well correlated with higher SSTs and potential intensity. While there's still some real scientific uncertainty here, Emanuel argues the SSTs are less important than the temperature divergence between the lower troposphere and stratosphere. The beautiful power dissipation and SST correlations are only found in the Atlantic basin. For now.

Now let's look at the specific issue, the quote by Harris. I noted the logical error you and a number of others have made is the meta-meta-generalization. This is obvious in the term "extreme weather event". And in how it might be defined, and over what time periods. Basically, as far as science goes, this is junk science. I'm not opposed to your going to a specific defensible subject. You've narrowed your scope down to (Atlantic, cyclones, time period, etc).

I actually noted that extreme precipitation events have been increasing. As have droughts. As have heat waves. Atlantic basin tropical basins aren't as big a deal-- even though the correlation is fascinating. There's still fair amount of uncertainty how the basin-- and other basins-- will react to continued warming.

I'll point out that you are wrong in saying "No data indicates that we'll be entering the next glacial". Data, eg, historical known facts, indicates we will cyclicly enter a glaciation. Data indicates a coming deep solar minimum. Data indicates an increase in co2. Past the data, you have scientific inferences, conclusions and predictions. What I corrected you on previously was your absolute position on there not being more glaciations - that we've affected the climate to that extent. I noted that you had an absolute belief, and you could not support this with published science because you'd have to then note the "could" and "may" qualifications in such articles.

You do love mixing and mashing arguements, don't you?

Understanding and controlling climate - how do you define control? That we influence climate is obvious, there is compelling, multiple lines of evidence to show that human CO2 emission is causing warming;

1. We can quantify emissions. Because the basic mechanism is understood (discover 150 years ago) We can calculate the effect of those emssions on the atmosphere in terms of the energy budget. We know that the sinks aren't saturated because the atmospheric fraction has remained constant.

2. Isotope analysis shows that the 'excess' CO2 percentage is due to fossil fuel emissions - the clue is in the word fossil.

3. There is a corresponding decrease in O2 level that is a signature of fossil fuel burning.

4. There is stratospheric cooling, this can only happen because of an increase in greenhouse gases. GCRs and solar cycles would be seen as heating.

We do have a big lever to control climate, unfortunately it's stuck in the fast forward position. Climate science is not in it's infancy, it's into it's late twenties, we know a lot, but occasionally get surprised. The climatology scientific community understand most of the processes and are working to reduce the error limits, there are parts wher the understanding is not so good, usually because the instumentation hasn't been there (ARGOS for deep ocean measurements, GRACE for ice measurements, etc), even when the instumentation is developed there is a delay because we need to develop a sufficiently long data record to determine statistical trends. This is only just starting to develop for both ARGOS and GRACE and both are showing alarming trends.

In terms of 'control' things start to get wooly. We definitely have an influence, without doubt. Our ability to control climate comes down to the political (and practical) ability, the limited trials in sequestrating carbon have been, frankly poor so far (the failure of CCS schemes in the UK, the poor results from iron dust deposition into the ocean). The main thrust at the moment has to reducing CO2 emissions - that's something that we do have control over, be it investment in large scale CSP or PV solar, individual solar in the home, subsidies for ground-heat pumps, etc. Pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere is a game that we haven't really played yet, so 'control' is a silly outlook. We have to develop the techniques first to be able to say that we 'control' climate, we know that we affect it, we don't know how to control ourselves.

The 'historical minimum' that you have tried to ridicule refers to Solar TSI, which has been at the longest recorded low point (we don't have measurement records for the Maunder Minimum, we have to work from paleo-evidence). That's the point of a historical minimum, it's a minimum in the direct measurement records that we have that can demonstrate a history (as opposed to .

Data, eg, historical known facts, indicates we will cyclicly enter a glaciation. Data indicates a coming deep solar minimum. Data indicates an increase in co2. Past the data, you have scientific inferences, conclusions and predictions. What I corrected you on previously was your absolute position on there not being more glaciations - that we've affected the climate to that extent. I noted that you had an absolute belief, and you could not support this with published science because you'd have to then note the "could" and "may" qualifications in such articles.

Glacial and interglacial periods aren't magical cycles. Over the past ~ 1 to 2 million years, Earth's climate has oscillated between glacial and interglacial periods about every ~ 100 thousand years. These cycles occur primarily due to the combination of orbital cycles and the geologically low concentration of atmospheric CO2. For a better understanding of this geologically modern climate, I suggest you read the first half or so of Geosystems by Christopherson (http://www.amazon.com/Geosystems-In...6226/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331864644&sr=8-1). It's a relatively easy read and should provide you with the foundation to understand modern climate change. There are countless modeling studies that are useful as well, but I think "The role of orbital forcing, carbon dioxide and regolith in 100 kyr glacial cycles" recently published by the EGU's Climate of the Past Discussions is a good start (http://www.clim-past.net/7/1415/2011/cp-7-1415-2011.pdf).

We understand why climate changed over the past ~ 2 million years. We understand the role of carbon. We understand the role of solar variation. We understand the role of orbital cycling. We don't understand every little last detail, but we really have a good handle on the basic system. And that understanding tells us that when CO2 levels increase too far beyond around 300 or 500 PPM, the tiny variations in Earth's orbit around the sun will not induce glacial periods. Indeed, when CO2 concentrations were higher, these geologically-modern glacial cycles did not exist.

We'd be waiting at the glacial-cycle bus stop without a ride. We'd be standing around with nothing to do. But that wouldn't make us think that all glacial-cycle buses had simply vanished. I already addressed this. In the last bit of text (the one in which you misquoted me), I wrote, "we will miss the next orbitally-forced glacial period. Which is great. At least there's some good news-- in the distant future." I agree with Hansen; we're wasting a fantastic resource that should be rightfully used to carefully prevent future glacial periods.

I'm not concerned with climate change so much as I am with rate. I'm sure you've read a lot of things from various blogs and think tanks. I know the language. "Junk science" is not a scientific term. It doesn't appear in scientific text books, journals, or lectures. "Junk science" and "sound science" are terms used by non-scientific sources pretending otherwise. But that's a different discussion all together. What I want you to take from this exchange is that the current rates of change are geologically unprecedented.

Nature has evolved just fine to the wonderful orbital climatic beats over the past ~ 2 million years. But the rates associated with these ancient cycles were orders of magnitude slower than today's rate of change. When we look at mass extinctions, we find relatively fast environmental changes. When environment changes too quickly, there is not sufficient time for development of beneficial mutation in sufficient numbers, and so selection acts not for genes, but against species. Change too quickly, and biodiversity declines. Species die.

Even the fastest carbon perturbation in the rock record (the so-called Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum) occurred at a rate an order of magnitude slower than today's, and it was still associated with a marine extinction (and subsequent warming).

I'm not an animal lover. I have four cats, but I could gladly do without three of them (I just like being married to my wife, so I put up with the cats). But I don't want mass extinction blood on my hands. I don't want to be a part of the destruction of entire ecosystems that evolved over millions or years. Complex cycles of life evolved from cosmic and planetary forces, and from these cycles self awareness was born. Sagan said, "We are a way for the Cosmos to know itself," and I happen to agree. Destroying entire ecosystems destroys us. It destroys the very cycles from which we evolved. It destroys the very metric against which we judge our own humanity.

The human impacts will be bad too, but I'm not leaving any children behind, and I think that overall we'll adapt just fine. It will just be expensive. And hard. And mindnumbingly preposterous to future generations why we didn't listen to our scientists. And I don't know why we don't. Maybe you can answer that question for me?

One article from Ramsdorf is not any sort of scientific certainly about this matter. Not in the least.

This is a fairly technical point and depends on iffy guesses as to the upper and lower ranges of effects of multiple variables. I'm sure you can understand that from these variables min and max a high and low probability as well as a bell shaped curve can be generated as to outcomes. Feedbacks are involved so any "bell shaped curve" may be considered as a snapshot of outcomes at some time t+x. To proceed to T+1+1, computations including estimates of those feedbacks (again, high and low estimates on their probable range) are required. This is no big deal and is an extremely simplified rendering of the modeling problem.

This in itself is PROOF that you were wrong in your absolute statement that "we will miss the next glaciation". This is not in doubt but if you want to continue it feel free to. But note that you can't prove an absolute position, when fundamental uncertainty exists so it's best not even to express such an attitude. There is no such thing as being able to state to 1 or 2 or 3 sigma, but even if that were possible, then you are still wrong, because none of those statements is not an absolute.

The scientific literature is not limited to citations in forum posts. Others have conducted the same modeling studies and found similar results. But the modeling studies are not of much value, as the results are pretty obvious.

As Richard Alley said during an AGU lecture a few years back, "Paleoclimate data show that sort of the mid-range models are right, and if there's a problem, the world is a little more sensitive to CO2 on some timescales than the models tend to produce." The point is, we have a very good idea of overall climate sensitivity because rocks and ice have been storing climate sensitivity data at good resolution for about a million years.

I clearly indicated that controlled, careful burning of fossil fuels to prevent future glacial periods is desirable while uncontrolled burning at geologically unprecedented rates is not. I even italicized the word "rate" for you. Please read my posts more carefully.

No, they are not obvious. And others have done such studies with a variety of results. There is no consensus on this matter of "missing the next glaciation". There is your belief that will occur. That's about it. Oh, and you support it with a vague argument from authority, while ignoring my comment:

  • First you tried to argue by reframing, focusing on "understand" and ignroing the entirety of Harris's statement.
  • Then you tried to misdirect by saying we "understand and impact" climate.
  • I am specifically saying that we understand and impact climate. Absolutely. That's what the science says.
  • Then mikecc tried to help or something...saying we "understand and influence" climate.
  • Now you are arguing that we could possibly control climate.

But all of these variations of position imply that Harris was correct in what he said. They are either NOT control, or they assert the future possibility of control, which implies it's current absence.
