Sorry, but we have freedom of speech in this country -- which means he gets say in pretty much everything he wants to talk about, including criticizing practices he disagrees with.

You pretty much misudnerstand free speech I think.

Free speech means that the *governement* cannot stop you stating your opinion, no matter which, as long as you respect some ground rule which has been amended/tacked in over the year (not yelling fire in theater, not libelling, not inciting to murder etc...).

But no matter the restriction this is about what the governement can do on a person's speech. this does say NOTHING about how private party can react to the speech.

In fact private party can 1) censor any speech they want within their private realm, and yes that include all media, be them paper or electronic. Yes google can censor you as much as they want. Private commercial interest can use the scissor up the wazoo. 2) free speech does not mean you have a right to be HEARD. Particularly it does not mean your opinion (or Kirk's) should be acted on , or accepted.

But in that sense this is not an issue about tolerance. In my experience, my generation doesn't tolerate anything about this because there's nothing straining our tolerance. It's simply accepted because it's all over the place rather than something that used to be a taboo only whispered about. I cannot envision a scenario short of a sudden outburst of homosexual crime waves and gay on straight attacks that would change this shift in attitude. They could use either knives or shotguns in these crime waves.

It will not be because of anything they do. I wonder about a changing world demographic. The part of the world that disagrees with gay issues (sometimes greatly) greatly outnumbers the part of the world that agrees. and the part of the world that agrees.... doesn't breed quite as much.

I do think that those with money and power have an easier time finding an outlet to spread their message and influence general opinion, but that works for either side of any argument.

I do think that those with money and power have an easier time finding an outlet to spread their message and influence general opinion, but that works for either side of any argument.

Indeed, and mostly the people with money and power who "educate" and supposedly help out in 3rd World countries are religious organisations... not the best possible people to go in preaching about gay rights.

I'm not sure how that relates to "on the ground" attitude (usually religiously motivated) towards gays, but point taken, on a state endorsed level.

Never mind the fact that it was human action that brought food, water, and medicine to your community. If you can't thank the being that put you here and killed your children with malaria, for providing you with this bowl of rice and warm water, you can't have it.

My atheism came in stages. First I rejected a particular denomination, then I became a theist agnostic, then an agnostic, then an atheist. The demonination was because of two things; defining factor was that they had children between the ages of 3-12 chanting that they will go to hell if they don't come to that church. What had me blinking in disbelief, though, was their boasting of their missionary work. They really were way too proud of themselves for spreading the word of god. Visiting villages in 3rd world nations and convincing them that it was god's kindness that brought them, insisting that they should be thanking Jesus, it kind of felt like a weird place for Jesus to suddenly start caring.

This is along the lines of what I was originally thinking. Also there is the issue of Turkey wanting to join the EU. In order to do so, they will have to sign on to the EU civil rights conventions, including tolerance of gays. This will eventually have an impact on public opinion on the matter in Turkey.

Another issue that I was thinking of, is that as countries gain wealth and that wealth becomes spread out, this promotes a push to political equality. It is what happened in Europe a few hundred years ago. As the concept of political equality spreads, more and more previously excluded groups start to gain ground in that arena as well. This is pretty much the history of the last two centuries in Europe and North America.

Also note that I am talking about wealthy nations, not wealthy individuals. This is why such reforms have not yet happened in the Middle East. The wealth is still concentrated at the top. However, as we are seeing, some of the nations are starting to move towards political equality. It will take time, but eventually that political equality will extend to previously ostracized groups (such as minority sects in that nation and eventually even gays)

That'll explain why 3rd world counties are so poor and have terrible records where it comes to gay rights.
