Obama to block Keystone Pipeline

....tremendous environmental damage in alberta.
we have no business mining the tar sands until it can be done responsibly.
Your communist friends in China will happily buy the oil if the US doesn't. And China is far less concerned about the environment.

And the significant damage is...?

US only please, we don't have people punching holes in the pipelines to steal oil/gasoline like in Nigeria and other places.

What environmental damage? Have any of the other pipelines in the US caused significant environmental damage? Probbaly the closest I know of is the Alaska pipeline melting the permafrost directly under it, but there's no permafrost in the lower 48.

You have no idea...

There are plenty of spills that go unannounced.

Facebook friends - "Obama is evil and wants to keep our dependence on foreign oil!" So, all y'all Canadians? Apparently you aren't a foreign country anymore - I guess you were annexed into the US on the down low...

Yea, I was wondering about that.

Apparently America's dependence on foreign oil will be solved by getting oil from a foreign country.

I don't know anything about Canadian regulations but why is Canada going to allow then? Canada does not care about the tremendous environmental damage in Alberta.

You really think this will kill people? Better get rid of the thousands of miles of pipelines already crisscrossing the US then!

I don't know about other parts of the route for the pipeline but there was major concern in Nebraska about taking the pipeline through on of the states major aquifers.

On a light note here in Kansas we have a radio show called 'from the oil patch' the producers have threatened to rename it Keystone half hour, because every show for the last year has been dominated by Keystone updates

here

My wife also works for the largest waste remediation company in the country. The horror stories she brings home are pretty telling.

I don't doubt that there have been spills and there is some damage but do you have any details of significant environmental damage?

How about they put that pipeline through eeyore1954 and wildcat's back yards. Come on guys, step up and show how much you love America.

Take a look at the Ogallala Aquifer--Wiki has a map. It extends from S Dakota all the way down into Around Pecos, TX--it is the primary source of water for W Texas and E NM--and it's only about 90-100 feet below the surface --somewhat deeper up north--but its SHALLOW!. It is also a very sweet water, and requires almost no processing to use.
An oil plume in that aquifer wipes out 30% of irrigation in this country, and a whole lot of people get really thirsty.
There are better solutions. Unfortunately, they will run through more populated parts of the country, and all the NIMBY's will finally kill it for good.

I already have a major thouroughfare practically running through my back yard. I suspect more harm is done to the environment from it. Lots of dead deer and other animals, auto pollution, etc. I am exaggerating a little when I say my backyard.

I am not neccesarily in favor of the pipeline but I am asking for evidence of significant environmental damage from other pipelines.

I certainly did not agree to the pipeline approval being tied to the payroll reduction extension and President Obama did exactly what I expected him to do.

Three things on this. One, didn't they already state that they planned to sell the oil outside the US anyway? So the idea that the US is going to miss out on a domestic oil supply is false.

Second, this is exactly the outcome the GOP wanted when they forced the President to stop doing studies and give a yes or no answer. President Obama warned them that if he had to skip the studies, he couldn't approve the pipeline, but they went ahead with this law anyway because this wasn't about oil at all, it wasn't about creating an issue for the election. And it succeeded.

Lastly, anyone who runs around screaming "SOLYNDRA, SOLYNDRA!" should not be listened to when it comes to energy independence. You can't spend your time undermining alternatives to oil and then complain because we import foreign oil. Unless you wish to be mocked.

Something you would know nothing about, then? Any pipeliner or oil field hand who knew of those incidents involving any significant quantity and did not report them would in danger of lawsuits (as would the Company) and being fired.

ETA: You linked to a list of obviously reported spills, but note the topic is pipelines in the US vis-a-vis the Ogalalah acquifer in Nebraska, not tanker spills or ship bilge-disposal problems.

there is another pipeline planned to the west coast to suppy china.
harper does not like having only one customer for our filthy tar sands oil.
first nations are denying access across their land.
hopefully this one will die on the drawing board too.

Also remember the topic is pipelines in the US vis-a-vis the Ogalalah acquifer in Nebraska, not tanker spills or ship bilge disposal problems. Several pipelines already cross the area specifically in question.
