100 million deaths due to capitalism in the 20th century.

I don't care who killed the vast majority of people last century, but saying that the cultures which fielded communism have no responsibility in this issue is poppy-cock. There is a general disregard for individual human life in both these countries, and people keep neglecting this fact when making their assertions on the matter.

I'm not sure how you can really back up this assertion, but even assuming it's true, that that just seems to indicate that communism only gets adopted in cultures which disregard human life. Still not much of an excuse for communism.

So, it's just a coincidence that early November, 1917 marked a dramatic increase in politically-motivated killing in Russia?

One also wonders how the Cambodian culture could have survived until the 1970s, if their "general disregard for individual human life" was what made the Khmer Rouge tick.

Virus made a good point, which I'll echo:

Would the Germans have exterminated the Jews and socially undesirable people of their conquered neighbors had the Nazis not come to power?

Most likely not; however, your argument ignores the fact that China and Russia most likely would've still been locked in decades of conflict and chaos had the communists not got into power anyway. Africa is a prime example of this. One regime would've been western supported and the other would've been anti-western and these two regimes would've duked it out for decades regardless if the opposing side would've been communism or not. If this were the case, the argument would no longer be against communism, but against other cultures.

If you wish to support your claim that the deaths attributed to the Great Leap Forward were inevitable (due to collectivism shown in Russian and Chinese history and their general disregard for their civilians), you have to show where you think those deaths would come from. Did Chiang Kai-Shek plan to implement anything at all related to the GLF?

Chiang Kai-Shek was incompetent and could not handle the task of feeding 500 million people, so was Mao Zedong, Mao however made it worse. There still would've been mass starvation in China. They had a deficit of grain supply and they were one of the poorest countries on Earth. I doubt that the nationalists would've done any better. GLF increased deaths not perpetuated them. There is no evidence to support that China would’ve had the means to feed these people regardless of who came to power, seeing as the grain shortages stem back to the end of Imperial China.

Most of the world does. What is your point?

No other nations have come close to the death toll of these two nations. If you want to ignore this fact, fine.

It is the direct cause of all the deaths in the Great Leap Forward.

Again, GLF exacerbated the situation, eliminating GLF still doesn't eliminate that famine would've happened in a rapidly growing post war china.

Except you don't see such numbers of deaths or Communistic regimes in places like India and Japan that also favor the "sacrifice for the collective" mentality. Why?

What is your excuse for India and Japan whose culture was similar to China and Russia in that respect? Why did Communism not to come those countries, and why aren't there a great number of deaths attributed to a redistribution of resources via Communism?

While it may be true that Japan and India have a collective mentality they have drastically different cultures to China and Russia. Even in regards to Japan and China, Japan has a drastically different world view than China does.

Find me evidence that suggests that India and japan viewed human lives as disposable body bags and I’ll drop the case. Find me rebellions and civil wars in India and Japan which have consumed more lives than power struggles in China and Russia, then I’ll believe you. Until then I see no reason to believe why communism, modern technology, and Chinese/Russian thought didn’t all play a role in the massive killings that took place in the 20th century. I am almost confident that India and Japan wouldn’t have had nearly as many death tolls if communism had been implemented in those countries. In fact, India has communism in many of its counties and communism in India has a fairly good track record. So I see no validity in your argument. It was definitely Chinese and Russian culture which exacerbated the situation and caused more deaths.

So China is culturally prone to having Great Leap Forwards and Cultural Revolutions?

Hmmm the building of the Great Wall of China? An Lushan Rebellion? By the way 30 million people died the An Lushan Rebellion during a time (8th century AD) where there was potentially less than 300 million humans, that means nearly 10% of humanity died in this conflict. If this doesn't send off alarms then I don't know what will.

Isn't this based on a census over a ten year period? You will have to show that there was no disturbance in how the census was taken before and after the conflict.

In other words, the claim of 30 million deaths is disputed.

Lowest estimate I've seen was around 20 million deaths so it doesn't make much of a difference. Still tens of millions of ancient Chinese dead at a time where 20 million deaths would've nearly decimated Western Europe.

How do you then explain the remarkable differences between North and South Korea?

The West, being the world's superior culture, is responsible for all ideas in the last few hundred years. Communism is one of the West's junk ideas. A sort of alternate utopian future that would be free of the supposed flaws of liberalism. This idea remained a fringe in the West, favoured by frustrated intellectuals from the middle class but failing to obtain mass appeal. But the idea found an export market in the Third World.

It is true that inferior, non-western cultures adopted communism, but this doesn't wipe the slate clean for communism. Because the West also exported liberal democracy and capitalism. The places that took that on did better than places the adopted communism.

Ideas matter.

PS: There was one Western country that had communism, East Germany. And it sucked so bad the communists had to build walls stop people fleeing.

Sigh racism never fades. When people ask me why I am not willing to defend my country or even respect its existence, I will always remember back to statements like these.

People who attribute deaths to either "capitalism" or "communism" are idiots.

I dunno if anybody here atributes deaths to communism. Communists, sure. They are especially prone to mass murder.

I'm pretty sure the prevailing argument has been that communism caused these murders and not (mostly) the individuals and or societies which fielded communism.

Well, communism is an ideology invites mass murder to happen. Because the only way to implement it is through extreme force. But still, individuals are responsible for the choices they make, not the concepts that led them to those choices.

What surprises me the most is that people refer to Marx and Engels as if they actually had a clue about anything.

It's a religion. Once the prophet-founder has made his* revelation, the believers are struck with it.

* usually his, but Ellen G White managed to inseminate the Scientific Creationism thingy.

If only Russia and China did not have such a bloody history I would agree with you all.

Its not like Russia and China are the only places that commies killed a bunch of people. Commies killed like 20% of the population of Cambodia, for example. I don't think there has been a commie state that didn't include mass murder

I don´t know what´s more hilarious, bikerdruid´s denial or Virus constant fear of communism.
