When I watch people who smoke, I often ask myself how can they do it. What is it that makes these people tick. They deliberately engage in a vice that they know will probably hasten their own death.

Is it because they really don't enjoy life and dying early is OK with them.

Is it because they don't believe in the science that shows how dangerous smoking is?

Or it it because they are selfish. They think of themselves and their enjoyment and don't worry about the consequences until they occur. They don't care that smoking arround their kids infuences their kids to smoke. They don't care that others often have to foot the medical bills in the form of higher insurance premiums, and they don't care about secondary smoke.

I believe that people who don't smoke are better people than those who do. Because I believe those who smoke do it for the last reason.

Now lets talk about meat eaters. That veal you ate last night. A young holstein bull calf was taken from its mother at day one. Kept in a cage to prevent him from moving and fed bucket milk for a few days until he was butchered. A newborn highly evolved consciousness was bought into this world to be tortured basically, a torture we would not perfrom on a prisoner of war, all for your veal.

Chickens kept in cages, debeaked to prevent pecking each other after they go insane from not being able to move for the short one year life span they are given to furnish you your eggs.. the list goes on.

Heart disease. We now know the cause. Meat and oil do not just contribute to heart disease, they are the cause. thats right they are the cause.

I dare you meat eating smart asses to actually take time to read this link:

When you go out into public, it is impossible not to see fat slobs wherever you go. Basically fat footballs with a head on top. Why are they such, just like the smokers.... they eat excessively because they enjoy it and will worry about the consequences later.

They are ugly. Not just because they are obese. But their fat, disgusting bodies are a testimony to their own extreme selfishness and complete lack of discipline. Their bodies are testimony to the worst afflliction one can posess....selfishness, glutony, overindulgance, lack of empathy, and refusal to set an example on how to live well for others, especially our children.....whatever you want to call it...if its bad,,,,baby you go it.

Its been known for years now how dangerous sugars and simple carbs are,,,but I bet your reading this with a dougnut stuffed in your mouth and one in your kids...,now our overindulgance in meat and oil has become our biggest killer. But that won't stop you from eating damn well what you want will it and taking the kids for a bigmac later too. After all, its all about you. And if all this ***** about nutrition is true, you worry about it later.

Thats why vegans are better people...we aren't you.

I dare you to read it...

Sorry, we all can't be perfect, but please, don't let my vast sea of imperfections dissuade you from telling me just how much better you are than me.

Some of them seem to be quite smug. Those individuals are disqualified from the "simply better people" contest.

Homo Sapiens Vegetabulus....No doubt a superior breed.

What do you win if you live two years longer than one of us carnivorous types?

What has any of this got to do with being vegan?

Are you saying that vegans are incapable of eating to excess and getting fat?
Are you saying that it's impossible to consume animal products in any quantity without harming your health?
Are you saying that all sources of animal products are inherently grotesquely cruel and inhumane?

What exactly are you trying to say?

Please, provide an argument to support the title of this thread.

Is the arrogance, smugness, rudeness and lack of understanding of others common to all vegans, or is it just you? Either way, your assertion that vegans in general are "better people" appears to be debunked by your own post.

You right now are deliberately killing your eyesight like the rest of us, but we still do it.

I go outside, even though I could get shot in the head.

I eat food, even though it could be poisoned.

They aren't that different from us.

Is it because they really don't enjoy life and dying early is OK with them.

Earlier than?

Or it it because they are selfish. They think of themselves and their enjoyment and don't worry about the consequences until they occur.

They don't care that smoking arround their kids infuences their kids to smoke.

Wait, so, the people who smoke don't enjoy life and dying early is OK with them, but.. their kids are completely open to the influence of their parents and don't have the same responsibility?

They don't care that others often have to foot the medical bills in the form of higher insurance premiums, and they don't care about secondary smoke.

What broad generalizations. Who said that because someone smokes this means that others must come over and mouth to mouth whenever the smokers exhale? They already have several laws dedicated to making them smoke outside, what more do you want to impede on these people with?

I believe that people who don't smoke are better people than those who do. Because I believe those who smoke do it for the last reason.

Or it it because they are selfish. They think of themselves and their enjoyment and don't worry about the consequences until they occur.

Being this reason? Really?

Alright? I will.

Yeah, enjoying things is for happy people, I don't want to see that.

They are ugly. Not just because they are obese. But their fat, disgusting bodies are a testimony to their own extreme selfishness and complete lack of discipline.

Oh.

Their bodies are testimony to the worst afflliction one can posess....selfishness, glutony, overindulgance, lack of empathy, whatever you want to call it...if its bad,,,,baby you go it.

They're just the worst thing you've ever seen, aren't they?

Its been know for years now how dangerous sugars and simple carbs are,,now our overindulgance in meat and oil has become our biggest killer. But that won't stop you from eating damn well what you want will it?

You know what the actual biggest killer of living things is? Being alive. If we're to be against anything that gives way to death, let's get serious.

Thats why vegans are better people...we aren't you.

Oh, how reasonable, that's a proper conclusion to draw here.

I have. What do I get?

I'd rather spend time around people who don't dehumanize other people based on their physical appearance and bad habits. This makes them "better" than you, OP, if you want to seriously make such arbitrary lines in the sand. Your opinions disgust me. I think you only champion these views to derive and buffer your sense of superiority. And you dare to call out others for a lack of empathy,...

I'm digesting a medium-rare sirloin and sipping a rather impertinant Zinfindel. I'm feeling a bit mellow and the rather superior tone of your post annoys me a bit, but not enough for me to do much more than postulate this is all you have to do on a weekend night.

Maybe you should get out more.

OK. I read the advertorial at the link you provided. Then I Googled Campbell.

http://www.cholesterol-and-health.com/China-Study.html and I read that. The title is The Truth About the China Study. I suggest every one interested in this topic read the article there. It may be summarized as follows:

The China Study contains many excellent points in its criticism of the health care system, the overemphasis on reductionism in nutritional research, the influence of industry on research, and the necessity of obtaining nutrients from foods. But its bias against animal products and in favor of veganism permeates every chapter and every page.

Less than a page of comments are spent in total discussing the harms of refined carbohydrate products. Campbell exercises caution when generalizing from casein to plant proteins, but freely generalizes from casein to animal protein. He entirely ignores the role of wheat gluten, a plant product, in autoimmune diseases, so he can emphasize the role of milk protein, an animal product. The book, while not entirely without value, is not about the China Study, nor is it a comprehensive look at the current state of health research. It would be more aptly titled, A Comprehensive Case for the Vegan Diet, and the reader should be cautioned that the evidence is selected, presented, and interpreted with the goal of making that case in mind.
Now what?

When someone accuses atheists of eating babies, it's bad.
When vegans do it, they're better people?

Sheesh... at least animals have a chance to run away.

I believe that people who don't smoke are better people than those who do.

In what way? Before you attempt to answer, consider that (for lack of a better example off the top of my head) Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a chain smoker, and Osama bin Laden was not.

I dare you meat eating smart asses to actually take time to read this link

I started to, but it came off even more condescending than you do... ;) Didn't make it past the intro.

I dare you to read it...

...did YOU read it? You know the research was done in China right? The subjects of study were rural Chinese. You're preaching to non-rural, non-Chinese people using rural Chinese people as examples?

I doubt very much that China has the same regulations regarding pesticides, polluted mining water runoff, cattle feed, and the like, so the fact that rural Chinese meat eaters are less healthy than rural Chinese vegans doesn't surprise me at all. The fact that you (and the authors of that book) would data mine that type of info to "prove" that you're "better" than everyone else doesn't surprise me, either...

Hey, I dare you to read this!

I think this thread can more accurately be titled as: "Why some vegans have an unjustified sense of superiority"

Its been known for years now how dangerous sugars and simple carbs are,,,but I bet your reading this with a dougnut stuffed in your mouth and one in your kids
You seem a bit fixated on mouth-stuffing images.

This can't be real, too stereotypical. It's exactly the sort of thing many vegans argue they're not.

That's nice. You can evaluate my entire life based on the fact that, on very rare occasions, I've lite up a cigar. Question for you: Have you ever spent a few weeks in an Alabama swamp? Cigar and cigarette smoke is a relatively cheap and easy way to keep the bugs off you. While I suppose in your view getting blood-born diseases may be the preferable alternative, I've found that the extremely minor increase in my risk of cancer from a cigar more than outweighs the risks from disease-laden insects.

Still feel smugly superior?

I dare you meat eating smart asses to actually take time to read this link
No. If you're any indication, the link is drivel designed to appear superior without having any substance.

See, here's my problem with this: First, there are multiple body types for humans. If I look pudgy, I'm probably deadly ill--I'm tall and lanky, and there's nothing I can do about it. When my cousin looked tall and lanky, it was because he was starving himself-a healthy body for him is simply bigger than one for me. You arrogantly assume that (what I assume to be) your own body type is universal, in the face of overwhelming clinical evidence to the contrary--yet at the same time insult us repeatedly for ignoring evidence. That's classical crackpot behavior. Second, there are diseases which can cause morbid obesity. What you're saying is the equivalent of going to a kid with leukemia and saying "You're an evil, rotten little child because your bones are diseased. Why don't you act like all the good little children? Because you're an evil, rotten person, that's why!"

Personally, I find prejudice and self-righteous arrogance to be more wrong than voluntarily doing something that may eventually have some negative consequences.

Strict vegan here, active in the animal rights movement for the past several years. Some thoughts....

I'm not a vegan for my health, so much for animals' health.

I've often recommended a low-fat, vegan diet as a way to lose weight. But in all seriousness, the argument from health benefits is not a knock-out argument for veganism:

1) People have a right to eat themselves to death. Its none of your business how people conduct their health.

2) People can be healthy on a non-vegan diet, live unremarkably healthy into old age. You undermine the argument for veganism (that is, prescribing it as an alternative to non-vegan diets) by advancing it as a health argument.

I'm not a vegan for my looks.

I really really really dislike this view as well. Its judgement in the EXTREME. I was the ugly kid in high school, I know what its like to be bullied for it. I know what its like to see very attractive young women being surrounded by friends and having all manner of nice things handed to them, and for me to be essentially friendless.

Not everyone is beautiful according to your standards. Its a fact of life, but is not a factor in whether someone is "better" than another. Please keep your judgemental attitude to yourself.

The argument from animal welfare is essentially strongest argument for veganism there is. There are lots of us on the forum who take this view, you might be interested in my perspective on the subject.

I can be a bitch sometimes in these discussions, its bad habit because this is such a touchy topic for me, but I try to keep a level head. People like calm, cool rational argument, even if its for a really microminority view like ethical veganism. Peter Singer and Tom Regan, two of the nicest people on the planet with a powerful capacity for lucid and rational argument, have inspired more people to jump on the vegan train than any invective personalities ever will.

At the moment, I find your style confrontational, off-putting, and judgemental. Its not helpful. Please stop.
