Congress asks Obama official to clarify testimony on unions

Reporting from Washington— An Obama administration official who was the principal architect behind the federal government's bailout of General Motors Corp. in 2008 may have lied to Congress, lawmakers charged on Thursday.

Ron Bloom, former senior advisor to the Treasury secretary and now assistant to the president for Manufacturing Policy, reportedly told a journalist and an author that he "did this all for the unions."

Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Burton wrote a letter to Bloom stating: "It appears that either a respected reporter and your former boss in the Obama Administration have both given inaccurate accounts of your comments to the public, or your testimony was not completely truthful."

I expect that this will be another of those cases (and there have been several already) where 'BeAChooser' gets his facts completely wrong yet he continues to act as if he is being honest.

Burton: "So, you were misquoted?"

Burton: "Well I'm going to call that guy up and ask him if you said that. You know that you are under oath here?"

Bloom: "I'm fully aware."

Now lawmakers are asking Bloom to clarify his remarks.

B, you have an amazing low level of skepticism. There is no evidence provided in that article that Bloom actually lied. At this point, it's one person's word vs. another. Why assume that he did lie? Because Obama's political opponents say he did? What are they basing that on?

Giving you the benefit of the doubt, if the guy lied, then fire his ass. Charge him with whatever he can be charged with. But until it goes beyond he said, he said this is just another silly BAC thread.

Not to mention that even if he did lie, it's difficult to imagine a more inconsequential lie. Then again, if we ask more questions, maybe we can catch him lying about whether he ate the broccoli at the dinner where he supposedly said he "did all for the unions" (whatever "it all" was).

In Overhaul Rattner writes the following description of the dinner: “I thanked my colleagues for the enormous sacrifices that each had made. ‘In this deal, in this incarnation,’ I said, ‘you have epitomized what it means to serve your country.’ Fortunately, after I spoke, Ron Bloom was there to lighten the mood. ‘I did this all for the unions!’ he jokingly declared. Everyone laughed and the war stories began to fly.”

proves he didn't lie under oath. I'm sorry, I don't follow your logic. The issue isn't whether Bloom made the comment *as a joke*, but whether he said it. He stated under oath that he did not say that. So either Bloom lied or the Rattner lied. And your source doesn't suggest that Rattner just made the quote up out of whole cloth. So that only leaves one conclusion. Bloom lied under oath.

Now whether you consider that lie inconsequential or not is irrelevant. Bloom lied under oath. And if he was willing to lie under oath about something you say is "inconsequential", isn't it more likely that he would lie about things that do matter?
