Merged Osama bin Laden dead,

Certainly no match for a team of SEALs. That's why none of them died. But how are you supposed to take alive people who are shooting at you?

I think there are some non-lethal means to do exactly this - stun grenades, tasers, gases etc. Osama got killed by headshot - that suggests that the order was precisely to kill.

Just heard on the news that Obama specifically gave orders to kill.

They don't use flashbangs to capture people. They use them to distract the enemy, particularly when there are hostages, in order to more easily kill him. They most certainly do not use tasers on people who are shooting. People can still shoot back if they have gases fired at them.

And a head shot suggests nothing beside he got shot in the head.

I'm not expert in such operations. I just imagine that if given order to capture they would find a way and means - e.g. some incapacitating gas or combination of "flashbangs", tasers, rubber bullets, whatever.

Anyway looks like the order was to kill, according to news. Why not take him to court?

The swift dumping of body could be problematic, too. Let's say Talibs produce a video of fake Osama saying "ha ha, I'm still alive"? Some sort of disinfo could be a good tactic for them now.

Even if they prefered to take him alive, I am quite sure that it wouldn't have been done if that ment putting the SEALs at any additional risk. That means shooting him if he's shooting at you. Cops would prefer to take people alive but they aren't going to be messing around with rubber bullets and crap if people are shooting at them.

Killing him is easier and perfectly legidimate. KSM has been in custody for eight years and he still hasn't been tried.

The only people who would be fooled by that are nutjobs who would never be convinced by anything the US Government did.

Agreed, keeping Osama in jail and trying him would pose additional troubles without giving much in return over the immediate PR success that we observe.

True, even though the major target of it wouldn't be the US public. Anyway such a scenario is rather improbable. I guess Osama had rather planned some retaliation in the event of his capture or elimination.

Afghanistan was never about terrorism and the taliban (except for an excuse), more about securing a gas pipeline.

Which pipeline would that be exactly? Do you have any evidence for this claim? Didn't think so. Go to the conspiracy forums to spew your nuttery.

I think killing him was the most practical thing to do. Done on orders or out of necessity. If it had turned out that we had to hand him over to some other nation (Pakistan) it's unlikely he would have ever made it here (not that I think we would have handed him over, just saying, he likely would have "escaped"). If brought to the US alive and tried, it would have been a security nightmare. Regardless of why he was killed, I think it's best from our (the US's) point of view.

I'm glad he was finally taken care of. I didn't realize Obama had shifted assets from Iraq to Afghanistan for the purpose of getting Osama. Good move!

I understand why so many Americans are so happy about this event! Again, I'm glad it's done. However I can't help but see the similarities between the celebratory scenes from Ground Zero, and outside the White House, and those from Middle Eastern countries when they have celebrated the death of a US service man, or some other tragedy. The major difference is that the US flags being waved aren't on fire.

I don't know, I just have a problem celebrating anyone's death. Even this penis head, that deserved to die, if anyone can be said to deserve to die. I have no major problem with capital punishment (some reservations concerning the amount of proof of guilt though), but I just can't seem to find joy is this, or any other death.

Someone call Dubya and ask him what he did with that "Mission Accomplished" banner.

THAT'S funny!

It's official, there is literally no way to make this any better.

I'm pretty much floating down the street. Morning Mr. Mailman! Happy Bin Laden is Dead Day! :D

Right with you man. I may even stop in at a pub after work just to be with other people. I can't remember the last time I had that feeling!

It's a great day.
