Merged School Secretary Persecuted For Making Porn

As a member of the school board, what would you have done?

Talk about lame. That's the lamest rationalization yet.

So, by your flawed logic, someone who portrays a person as a brutal serial murder, shouldn't be allowed to work with children.

After all, a movie is made for everyone to see.....
In movies, murders are faked, violence is faked, crimes are faked. In porn, sex is real. Didn't you know that? Also, Santa Claus doesn't exist.

Would anyone's opinion actually be different if her partners did wear condoms?

Rights are rights no matter who you are and what you do so long as it's legal. So someone please tell me why a porn star doesn't have the right to work at a public school?
Because having sex in a public school is illegal.

So there are, what, three arguments in play now, all silly?

1. The "unprotected sex/role model" argument. ("Sex with an STD-checked professional is too risky!"). It's just plain factually wrong. Porn actors are at substantially less risk of dying as a result of work-related activities than many people with jobs that schools would never sack people over.

2. The "distraction" argument. ("Little Jimmy can't settle down to his trig lesson if he knows there's a porn star in the admin block somewhere!"). I think this is just plain factually wrong too. Lots of other things are greater threats to children's attention spans, and she offered to move to a role without student contact.

3. The tu quoque argument. ("Society is inconsistent in all sorts of ways, so we can do whatever we want and you can't criticise us"). Canonically fallacious.

None strike me as sound.

This.

Because having sex in a public school is illegal.

She was having sex in a public school?

And this is bigotry because-? Sorry, disagreeing or disapproving of this does not automatically equate to "bigotry." And frankly IMO throwing out the "bigot" bit sounds to me like some variant of the race card being thrown out even when it may not apply.

I also find it shall we say curious that some people think if something's legal, it's "OK."

First, thank you for answering in an intelligent, adult way. Re your question, as I said above, yes, although I agree it's certainly not as significant/critical as if it was a teacher by any means. Still, to some extent or other, every member of the faculty is a role model to the kids. Again, trying to equate school faculty to any generic employee of any company is an absurd oversimplification.

Oh yay, another attempt to twist my words.

I could just as easily counter with an equally silly word twist/extreme viewpoint ie "because challenging cultural mores is always good, right? The good old traditions are always wrong?"

Then you should present a viewpoint that isn't that, shouldn't you?

In movies, murders are faked, violence is faked, crimes are faked. In porn, sex is real. Didn't you know that? Also, Santa Claus doesn't exist.

Wasn't one of the arguments about having her fired was because she isn't a being a positive "role model"?

So it is a positive role model to play the part of a brutal serial killer with the intent of anyone can watch it, but it is not a positive role model to have sex on film, with the intent of only adults watch it?

Sorry, you have not come up with any real reason that a) a porn start doesn't have the right to work in a public school and b) a good reason why she should have been fired.

Your claim of "since sex has been on film, it's there for all to see" doesn't hold water: the secretary did NOT pass out films to the students, some kid found out quite by chance and accident.

Oh, and as to Santa Claus? I knew that. Thanks, though.

Because having sex in a public school is illegal.

It mentions nothing about her having sex anywhere in the school.

What article did you read? Or are you creating Santa Claus?

Now please man up and answer this question:
Rights are rights no matter who you are and what you do so long as it's legal. So someone please tell me why a porn star doesn't have the right to work at a public school?

It's your claim that testing is adequate so you'll have to do your tree felling stuff on your own.

Failure of testing.

Much higher rate than average people, near prostitution levels.

These anecdotes are meaningless unless you know what the risk of serious harm or death is per worker per year. Since by your own admission you have no such data and have no inclination to get it, you have no basis whatsoever to make claims about risk.

If that helps, great. Though to reiterate, it's not the porn industry I have a problem with at all. It's your analogies, and your insistence that condoms don't make an appreciable difference.

Sure they make an appreciable difference. Nobody ever said otherwise, so I find your claim that I am insisting otherwise very strange. They make a difference, but statistically porn work is safe enough without them that anyone acting out concern about the safety of the poor porn workers is hypocritical or misinformed.

Also you ignored the question raised by Taarkin - would your opinion change in any way if it turned out the actress in question did use condoms? Would that solve the entire problem for you?

Bigotry:having or revealing an obstinate belief in the superiority of one's own opinions and a prejudiced intolerance of the opinions of others:

Obstinate:stubbornly refusing to change one's opinion or chosen course of action, despite attempts to persuade one to do so:

It is my opinion that there is no rational reason for demeaning someone who acts in porn. It actually endears me to them. If there were better arguments for anti-porn and conservative moralism, I guess I would be the bigot, because I think those ideas aren't sane.

I also find it shall we say curious that some people think if something's legal, it's "OK."

Honestly, who is really saying this?

If there was a "porn clause" or something relating directly to that, she can legally be fired. Otherwise, she cannot, without them breaking the law. Don't forget, at one time having an openly gay teacher was unthinkable.

...snip...

Porn is bad, mkay?
Why?
Porn is bad!
But why?
Because it's bad, and however many ways you twist it it doesn't change that.

I've learned so much here.

A member of the school board could think:

Society says porn is bad

You may then respond with "But why?"

A perfectly reasonable answer that is "critical thinking" would be:

No idea/lots of reasons but the why doesn't concern the school board we have to deal with the world as we find it, it's not our job to campaign for a more rational approach to these matters.

That's a straw man. She was a secretary, not a teacher.

And even if she was a teacher, why wouldn't the students take her seriously?
Seeing as several people are making unsubstantiated assumptions about the behaviour of (male?) teens, how about "the teenage boys in the school would take her more seriously because she's won some respect for being so damn cool she makes porn movies!". Whoah! At last! A member of staff at school who isn't square and boring! etc.

I just thought I'd throw that in to demonstrate how absurd the "the children wouldn't be able to handle it/take her seriously" argument is.

Yeah, the whole argument goes right out the window when you add up the facts. It's like saying that teens can't handle sex. Uh, ok if you discount the fact that teenage pregnancy was the norm since the dawn of civilization. How about adults can't handle teens? Oh man, then the evidence starts piling up fast.

That's the stupidest argument I've ever heard. If we don't have porn actresses in schools, kids will get sexual hangups. I won't even ask for evidence, because I know you don't have it. But Jesus, that was lame.
Wow, you so twist peoples' words, don't you? :eye-poppi

I did not say that schools had to have porn actresses to ensure children don't get sexual hang ups. I said that seeing as this situation had arisen (no pun intended) the adults should treat it in a manner that demonstrates to the teens that this is a normal part of adult society and not something to be ashamed about and swept under the carpet. To do so runs the risk of kids associating sex with something shameful. That is religious bullpoo and it is that which I don't agree with.

'xactly.

Notwithstanding the fact that this statement is a massive strawman, are you absolutely certain it is illegal in Canada to have sex within the grounds of a public school? Strange ol' law that would be!
