Wow, that's pretty disgusting. Not to mention the fact that when someone points out the bad things the US did decades ago, it's hand-waived away with "But that's just so long ago, doesn't matter anymore". But if it fits the own agenda, there seems to be no problem to do just that.

Let's hope that the death-toll in Japan does not get too high, and that the reactor situation won't get worse.

The devastation he refers to is the harm the bad publicity will cause to the nuclear industry, technological civilizations best hope for cheap clean and abundant energy.

Well, an earthquake destroying a huge dam would cause major death tolls also. Granted, nuclear spillage is scarier and lasts longer, but evacuation is at least possible. A tragedy such as Chernobyl's will never be repeated in Japan or in most countries, because governments are more responsible nowadays.

Given the looks of the explosion at the plant I'm thinking it had to be steam. If I had to guess: the introduction of sea water may have produced excess cavitation which ruptured one of the elements in the heat exchange mechanism.
