Not to be a ass, but people are dying in Japan right now, so as much as it seems witty and original to make Godzilla jokes, everybody and their mother has thought about it, and it's a bit in bad taste right now.

Is it as bad taste as the kind of salivating over disaster porn - poorly masked by not terribly convincing concern - that's been constantly rolling on a thousand and one TV channels for the last umpteen hours?

I would say not. A joke is a joke. It adds levity and some sense of perspective.
But prurient excitement at seeing people being destroyed is much darker.

Last night, when I first watched the news on it, they showed an office building during the quake and all the people in it reacting to it.

What I found amazing, in one of the pieces of footage they showed, was that office workers continued banging at their computers. What were they doing? Tweeting?

On the subject of reactor containment pressures.

During normal operation the containment pressure is kept slightly negative (wrt atmospheric pressure) so air will ingress into the containment in the event of a leak.

The containment building is regularly pressure tested up to 5 bar positive pressure.

In the event of reactor vessel or associated piping breaks, the pressure and temperature in containment will rise substantially. There are systems in place to reduce the pressure and temperature.

The reactor cavity will also be flooded with borated water to absorb neutrons and kill the fission process.

This is achieved by a system called containment spray. At the top of the containment are huge shower heads which will spray water with a trisodium phosphate component to reduce hydrogen and reduce the temperature and pressure.

The term MG1962 was looking for is called "islanding".
This means that the reactor and turbine does not trip but disconnects from the grid. Reactor power is reduced and the electricity generated supplies the plant. This is called "house load"

Reports are saying he was on the beach taking photos of the tsunami waves with two other friends. They escaped and he didn't.

What I found amazing (in a good way) was the footage of the employees in the supermarket. All the goods were being shaken off the shelves the place was moving so much and instead of trying to get themselves out, they were all lined up at the shelves trying to hold all the stock in place.
That's dedication to your job. I imagine if such an event happened in the UK, the staff would trample over the grannies to get out (probably with their pockets full of stock they'd managed to pilfer).
