Profiling works, but I don't think it is sufficiently accurate to produce a guilty verdict (>99%). Perhaps profiling is sufficient to determine reasonable doubt (<1%). What do you think?
I think profiling can disprove a theory of the crime and can provide evidence. 5 70/30 pieces of evidence all in agreement get you above 99%. So yes I do consider "fitting the profile" to be some evidence but not a great deal.
The same a physical piece of evidence would be treated. Assuming for example when the split open the knife there is lots of Meredith's DNA under the handle. That makes the knife a weapon which was likely used in the homicide. Not enough to convict for a murder by itself but it shifts the evidence burdon.
A good rule of thumb in my book is 4 pieces of evidence + 1 pieces for every likely conjecture + 2 pieces for every unlikely conjecture. A profile is one piece of evidence.
