Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

And hilarity ensues.

I actually offered an ethical solution to the moderate Fundies (as opposed to the crazy Fundies) at Narniaweb which didn't violate the ethical grounds against incest yet still fit in with a (relatively) literalist interpretation of the Bible:

I posited that they should instead adopt the stance that the sons of Adam married Female Nephilim as described in Genesis 6:1-4.

1. When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them,
2. the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.
3. Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years."
4. The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

For SOME reason they decided to stick with the "sisters" or "Mum" interpretation.

As the "sisters" interpretation is Extra-Biblical anyway (it's not specified that Cain and Seth married their sisters), and the Nephilim ARE Biblical and specified as having mated with humans, it seems far more logical for a Fundie to posit that the wives were Nephilim.

One of the Senior Nweb Mods who happens to be a pastor even rolled his eyes and groaned: "I'm sick of hearing about the Nephilim. It's just a New Age Fad" (paraphrase).

I suspect that they would rather stick with the incest model because being descendants of Highly Spiritual Beings would be too Gnostic for the Fundies as it would suggest that all humans have a spark of Divinity within instead of being utterly fallen and totally Depraved.

This and some other posts are all off topic and should be put in the AAH thread like my post was. I'd advise anyone who wants to see a comparison of Genesis and Science to read chapter 4 of former skeptic Ralph Muncaster's 600 page book "Examine the Evidence". There is also a comparative graph in the appendix. It gives a much better explanation and look at this Genesis issue than the thread I had about this topic called, "Is Science Getting Closer to God and the Bible"

http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97347

And for the record there are explanations for the points you bring up. Now back to this New Testament thread.

That link leads to:

It worked when I clicked it. It's another of his thread where he fails to support his assertions and links to sites that spew long since debunked whacky ideas about religion and science.

Is Science getting closer to God and the Bible?
I came across this site that claims many scientific principles were actually presented first in the bible.

By the way DOC, seeing as Jesus came to fulfill the OT, what do the Gospels have to say about OT God's apparent approval of incest?

If Jesus didn't say anything about it, should we assume that Jesus was fine with it?

Well, since Jeebus *is* Gawd, and Gawd is the Holey Spirit, and the Holey Spirit is Who impregnated Mary -- what is the obvious conclusion?

Mary: the first MGLTF.
.

So jebus had relations with his own mother? That's nothing new. Cain and Able also either had sex with their mother or at least with their sisters. :)

This is so patently absurd, I can't even believe that someone wrote it. My God, but DOC is completely unaware of historical fiction? It's a whole category on Amazon, for pete's sake.

I could write a novel today, and make the Kennedys into the lead characters, and they couldn't "take punative action" against me for doing so. What a moronic argument.

There's a whole subgenre of historical mystery novels that make actual historical figures into detectives. One series is set in the court of Queen Elizabeth I; another features Jane Austen solving murder mysteries; a third, which may not have reached "series" status, involved Elvis Presley as amateur detective.

Tom De Haven's novel It's Superman!, set in the 1930s, has Lex Luthor being blackmailed by someone who threatens to expose, among other things, photographs of him "with Prescott Bush and George Herbert Walker and a representative of a Berlin chemical factory" I haven't noticed the Bush family taking any action -- punitive, punative, or any other sort -- against Mr. De Haven.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt must really have met Oliver Warbucks and his adopted daughter Annie. The musical couldn't have shown it if it weren't true.

And never mind any of that - the NT is purported to be a true account - naturally its authors (and editors) are going to have included real people and locations.

DOC's argument here is like saying that the UK government claims about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction must have been true because the "dodgy dossier" mentioned Saddam Hussein and real locations.

Yes you responded. But there is still is no evidence that the gospelers were writing the truth. Perhaps they were writing what they thought was the truth. They were also writing what was an oral tradition doing the rounds of Palestine. You know how oral stories can become the complete opposite of what the original story was all about.

When as a kid, you ever play the game of telephone? Where kids sit in a circle and one whispers to the kid next to him/her and tells a story or a gossip. By the time it does the full circle, the story comes back to the originator and it's nothing like it started.
That's like the oral tradition.

Thank you for your opinion; did you ever think of just letting the thread and its posts stand for themselves without offering your opinion. I noticed many skeptics post opinionated posts like yours that offer no new information.

Have you considered the possibility that this may be due to the fact that if you keep saying the same thing the answers are also likely to be the same?

Yes you responded. But there is still is no evidence that the gospelers were writing the truth...
I disagree and many of my 2200 posts give the reasons for my disagreement.

And for the record you have said there is 0 evidence that the NT writers were telling the truth. So that means post 13104 has 0 evidence the NT writers were telling the truth according to your opinion. Since you offered your opinion I'll offer mine. I think it really hurts the credibility of some skeptics to say there is 0 evidence the NT writers were telling the truth. I can see you saying OK there is some evidence, but just not enough to convince me.

And I'm glad several skeptics have said that because in my opinion it tells me several skeptics are totally biased about this topic and I think besides hurting those skeptics credibility it could be telling those unbiased people who might be on the fence (who really think about this), hey maybe some of these skeptics do have an agenda since they seem to be so biased. And it could be telling those unbiased people that it looks like it is just not in some skeptics make up (whatever the reason) to admit to one speck of evidence (even in post 13104).

ETA: And that seems odd for people who are supposed to be unbiased intellectuals not to admit to one speck of evidence in a thread like this. One has to wonder why, why can't some admit to one speck of evidence? People have got to really think about that?

Hahaha, oh boy, what a silly attempt at an argument. Let's see how that works the other way:

And I'm glad believers have said that because in my opinion it tells me that believers are totally biased about this topic and I think besides hurting those believers credibility it is telling those unbiased people who might be on the fence (who really think about this), hey maybe some of these believers do have an agenda since they seem to be so biased; and it looks like it is just not in some believers make up (whatever the reason) to admit to not one speck of evidence (even in post 13104).

See? Works just fine. And frankly, it feels much more like reality than your version does. One might want to add the fact that certain believers prefer to throw around numbers instead of arguments, as if quantity would trump quality. One might also add that certain believers create numerous threads full of lies and distorted reality, like to fuel Islamophobia, don't care about facts, etc. And yes, that is true for pretty much any of your posts/threads, DOC.

Ever wondered why that is?

Greetings,

Chris

2. It is true but not because the Bible says so, it just is.
We need corroborating evidence outside the biblical texts of the events in question not just the existence of Christians or opinions of famous people.

If we do not have that outside corroborating evidence then you are back to position 3, which you imply is not what you believe. Here is where we have be trying to get you to provide that supporting information. You provided a lot of things in your oft referenced post 11054. Since they have been addressed at length in the past I will be brief.

5000 New Testament manuscripts:
1. this is irrelevant to whether or not the story is true.
2. how many of these actually date to within a few years of the life of Jesus
3. You also seem limit your comments to the 5000 NT references. But the NT is more than just the Jesus story, what percentage of the 5000 is actually dealing with that and not Revelations.

Sir William Mitchell Ramsay:
1. Opinion of a famous guys does not count as evidence
2. Besides he expressly exclude the magical stuff

40 written sources for the life of Christ (31 Christian + 9 non-Christian)
1. You have mixed referenced to Christians in this list as equivalent to Christ
2. There are suspected forgeries in this list
3. You have not cited any as actual witnesses of the events beyond the recording of a man crucified that fits the name (and a common one at that)
4. This is not evidence that the story is true
5. Do any of these non-Christian sources make any referenced to miracles?

Christianity had spread all the way to Rome by peaceful means and Nero blamed the Christians in Rome for the Roman fire in 64 ad.-- 31 years after the death of Christ.
1. Evidence of the existence of Christians is not evidence that all the NT is true.
2. Peaceful expansion has no bearing on the truth of the bible

Jews have been converted to Christianity because of Isaiah Chapter 53 and at least one writer has claimed there are 25 fulfilled prophesies in that one chapter.
1. Conversions are irrelevant to the truth, people change religions all the time.
2. Others have pointed out that the passages in Isaiah have been taken out of context and twisted to fit the fable or visa versa

Most archaeologists believe Jesus' 1st century tomb is most probably directly under the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
1. No references cited suspect that this is a skewed sampling that is limited to at least Christian Archeologist if not an even smaller subset.
2. Irrelevant to the truth in the NT.
3. A unmarked tomb was ‘rediscovered’ 200-300 years after the resurrection and accurately attributed to Jesus having been there 3 nights. How did they determine this?

Thomas Arnold's statement
1. Opinion of a famous guy does not count as evidence.
2. Besides it is obviously hyperbole

The Moral Argument,
1. this is not evidence it is a philosophical argument
2. It is a bad one that fails on several points

The Cosmological Argument,
1. this is not evidence it is a philosophical argument
2. It is a bad one that fails on several points

Martyrs
1. Irrelevant, only evidence of conviction/belief
2. Special pleading, my martyrs count but yours don’t.

Simon Greenleaf
1. Opinion of a famous guy does not count as evidence.
2. Relies on Special Pleading and his argument can equally be applied to other religions

The Oral Torah is more important than written the Written Torah.
1. What? Why is this even here?
2. This undermines you point.

Dr. Hugh Ross claims
1. Opinion of a famous guy does not count as evidence.

DOC, We are still waiting for the evidence you have promised. We understand that the above arguments have allowed you to conclude that the bible is true. However when thoroughly examined under the harsh light of logic there are insubstantial as actual evidence of the resurrection.

If you want to reduce the level of harassment you are getting you are going to have to put fourth something new and a little more grounded in logic. Otherwise you are likely to continue to get more of the same.

You seem to have completely missed the fact that your "evidence" has been seriously challenged and found wanting: all of it. What you are now arguing is that the truth is always somewhere in the middle and that anyone who rejects the whole of your argument thereby exposes themselves as biased. But that just isn't true:if the whole of your position is wrong then it has to be rejected in its entirety. If you have evidence or argument to show that the response to your position is flawed in some way bring it on: refusing to do that does not make you right

I'm talking about people in this thread, what believers in this thread have given a biased post. Point out the post and explain why it is biased.

Yes, but it can't be proven that the whole of my position is wrong, therefore people who claim the whole of my position is definitely wrong are wrong based on the facts that are currently in existence.

Which parts of the "evidence" which Waterman addressed in the post I quoted have you given up using, because they have been shown to be flawed? Which specks?

One could start with this post, for example. It is biased because the believer really wants it to be true, and thus discards reason and critical thinking. He tries to use the text, that he wants to prove true, as evidence that it is true.

Just too bad that things don't work that way. The same poster has made many more posts in this thread that try to weasel around, constantly failing to give any shred of evidence. Same poster also fails to address the points raised by others, and tries to handwaive them away.

And lets not forget that same poster's silly arguments have resulted in de-converting two people, making them giving up their faith. So, that poster not only fails to make sound arguments that may persuade fence-sitters, no, he also manages to de-convert believers.

Really, you should look up the meaning of "honesty", and try to behave like that.

Greetings,

Chris
