Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

Other than the PIGS Italy is thought to be the next in trouble. Poland and Romania have no money to help with a bail out, they both draw more money from the EU than they contribute.

The three big funders for Europe are Gernamy, France and the UK...
France and England are having problems too. Remember all the rioting in in France recently.

And what is with this PIGS stuff? It seems odd that you would talk of those 4 countries in that manner even if the letters coincide.

Just to clarify. The following table lists the EU countires, their belief in a god and whether they contribute to the EU pool or draw from it

Country | Belief in God | Pays or takes
Malta | 95% | Takes
Cyprus | 90% | Takes
Romania | 90% | Takes
Greece | 81% | Takes
Portugal | 81% | Takes
Poland | 80% | Takes
Italy | 74% | Pays
Ireland | 73% | Takes
Slovakia | 61% | Takes
Spain | 59% | Takes
Austria | 54% | Pays
Lithuania | 49% | Takes
Switzerland | 48% | Pays
Germany | 47% | Pays
Hungary | 44% | Takes
Luxembourg | 44% | Pays
Belgium | 43% | Takes
Finland | 41% | Pays
Bulgaria | 40% | Takes
United Kingdom | 38% | Pays
Latvia | 37% | Takes
Slovenia | 37% | Takes
France | 34% | Pays
Netherlands | 34% | Pays
Denmark | 31% | Pays
Sweden | 23% | Pays
Czech Republic | 19% | Takes
Estonia | 16% | Takes
Italy is in financial Trouble. (Some analysts use PIIGS to include Italy - Europe's longstanding biggest debtor.)

Austria at 54% is the only 'religious' country that manages its affairs well enough to contribute to the EU. The general rule is the more religious you are the more likely you are to need help and the less religious the more likely you are to provide it.

Were those the slaves that Jesus said it was okay to beat, and the ones that his father said it was okay to beat to death, as long as they didn't die immediately after the beating? Those slaves?

We've been over this at least 40 times, I'm not going there again. And I noticed you didn't give the verses. Maybe because the vast majority of translations don't use the word slaves.

But the French and 'English' (you mean British) do not need bailing out. Britian is loaning Ireland £7 billion on top of the general EU bail out.

It is not odd, it is the term everyone* uses.

From the BBC.

PIGS is a horrible acronym.

But this is how the financial markets refer to the troubled and heavily-indebted countries of Europe - Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain.

How about the verse where the bible says it's acceptable to sell your daughter into slavery? How was that retroactively PC'd in the "latest" translations? Selling your daughter into maidery?

We could argue about translations vs original texts, we could argue about how many translations (nine, I think you suggested) makes a vast majority, but you know what? Those are not the important bits.

It makes little difference whether you talk of slaves, bond-servants or servants; what matters is that your book describes and condones the ownership, beating and killing of human beings. Would you please stop trying to fudge the argument into semantics about translations and actually address the content?

Verses are not important. There is no literary analysis that would support your contention. For the NT to be true the Natural Laws have to have been suspended. Prove that this is possible.

But that's what his lot have been doing for the last 2,000 years! "No, what God actually meant was..."

That's the trouble with omnipotent beings - they're lousy at giving dictation.

It's almost like instead of one guy giving orders to everyone, it's a lot of guys pretending to get orders from one guy.

But that couldn't possibly explain it...

Well then it is has a monotheistic God that believes in the caste system (and reincarnation) whereas Christianity says all are equal before God, even the servant/slaves that existed in biblical times; and Christianity does not have a dogma of reincarnation.

Hey, you brought it up again. As long as you keep trying to sell the "God is the refuge of the slave" line, I have a right to point out that God wasn't always so tenderhearted.

There is no need to cite the verses, since, as you well know, they have been cited to death in this thread already.

And I notice you didn't respond at all to the citations from the Old Testament. Are you cutting that loose from your holy book now? Having decided that it is truly indefensible, are you just giving up on it? Well, I suppose that's progress of a sort.

The New Testament wasn't written in "translation" though, was it?

The vast majority = the very few DOC has any kind of personal knowledge of.

And DOC, Scandinavia is perhaps the most secular part of the world, and we are doing quite well up here, thank you!

Yet another mistake on your part. The strikes and massive protests (of which riots were a satellite effects) were actually about the rising of the age of retirement.
It's economy is actually weathering the world wide crisis better than most.

DOC, if all people are equal before your god, why aren't women allowed to teach or speak in church and why do you believe that a man should be the moral head of the household? That doesn't sound very equal, does it.

Some are more equal than others.

Ok, it's open now. The whole Theosophical discussion has been shuffled off to Abandon All Hope. Any furthering of that discussion will be met with infractions, at a minimum. This is, allegedly, a discussion on the HISTORICAL evidence of why we blah blah, not some mystical occult nonsense discussion. If you want to have one of those, go start a new thread in Religion and Philosophy.

Don't make me pull this entire thread over to the side of the forum again!

Which Old Testament verse are you talking about? Skeptics seem to never give the verse when talking about slaves or anything else that seems derogatory (when compared to our modern post industrial society norms) to us.

Exodus 21:7.

Why does it seem that the atheists on this thread know the Bible better than you do?
