Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

That's nice. I'd like to see Doc (or anyone else) prove it's possible to change water into wine. What the people want has no impact on what anyone is capable of doing.

It is very simple: In the NT legend which symbolically transmits the myth of human perfectibility, the 'white' 'water' of human 'enlightenment' is transformed in to the 'red' 'wine' of human 'exaltation in perfection' through the Sacred Marriage.

Of course it's possible to change water into wine. It's all a matter of timing.
1) Get a grape seed
2) Plant it
3) Water it
4) Let it grow into grapes (which require more water)
5) Pick them
6) Crush them
7) Strain the juice (which is mostly water)
8) Add yeast
9) When the yeast is done, you have wine.

See, water into wine in nine easy1 steps

1For wide range of values for "easy"

Pfft, I change beer into piss a couple times a week.

The Loaves and Fishes story violates conservation of matter. A human being unaided by some floatation device cannot walk on water. You cannot simply put a severed ear back on someone. You cannot wish water into wine. If any one of these things could be repeated it would profoundly change our understanding of the universe. Absent evidence that any of this is possible there is no purpose in looking for history in the Bible.

And if God exists miracles are possible.

Well, good thing we got that cleared up. You heard it here folks, DOC just said that miracles aren't possible. That's right, after all this time he finally admitted that miracles are not possible.

And if God exists miracles are possible.

Are you now saying God might not exist? Did you really mean to use "if" in your post? That one little word was quite telling, DOC, perhaps this thread is slowly, very slowly, having an effect on you.

That's what I was aiming for, Lothian!

Somebody once propounded to me the theory that at the wedding in Canann it was Jesus's mother who told him to provide more wine, and that it was the duty of the groom to furnish said article.Coupled with the fact that his mom and all the disciples were there,he was convinced that it was in fact the wedding of Jesus and the Magdalene.I can't be bothered to look in the book of fairy stories to find out if his mother did tell him to buy a round,or check if the groom had to dish up the wine at a Jewish wedding back then.

I don't know who originated the idea, but I first read of it, I think, (I'm not going to dig up the book to check because I have come to realize it's hoakum) in "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" which was largely the basis for Dan Brown's Da Vinci code.

Before even reading that book, though, I always thought it was strange that Mary, as a guest, would worry so much about the problem. I still find it strange and--going on the implausibility that the story is more than just a story--have always thought it implied something counter to dogma. The explanation you put forth works as well as any, I think. Except, of course, for the one that says the whole thing is made up.

Well... first you start with a grape seed, some fertile soil the right climate and sunshine, add water... :D

This is truly unbelievable. 411 pages, and still not one iota of evidence, and the way it's going, there won't be in the foreseeable future either.

So is the non-existance of miracles evidence for the non-existance of god?

Of course one could postulate a god bound by the laws of her creation, i.e. incapable of "supernatural" intervention.

Alas, to no avail.
Put that chicken down! you don't know where it's been!

What were we talking about? I can't seem to find the topic anymore.

Cricket reference. I am happy to explain if anyone has 3 weeks free.
Sure, it's not like we're getting any evidence anytime soon. Might as well learn about something.
