Colbert! Congress!

Colbert continues to deliver.

Do we know that they wanted him to testify in character, or did he just decide to?

I'm not sure, but it was a brilliant decision! It was comedy enough to get people to tune in, yet he manages, while in character, to get his point across: to argue himself into corners where even his rabid right-wing persona has to admit that granting immigrant workers visas as a way to earn citizenship is a good idea. I have to admit I was doubtful this was the best strategy going in, but having watched his opening address, in character was obviously the way to go (unless we are to assume the audience is just too darn dumb to appreciate irony; but I doubt that most are).

Um, I think I answered all of your questions. It seems as if you want me to say something that I didn't say.

This might go faster if you just tell me what you want me to argue then you can write some really cool stuff and then my eyes will be opened and I will see everything completely differently.

Supposedly Colbert's one day experience gave him some tremendous insight into this issue. Insight encapsulated as follows:
We ask them to come and work. Then we ask them to leave again. These people suffer. They have no rights.

I find this "insight" to be shallow and insipid. I would expect this kind of summary of an issue in an elementary school newspaper or third-grade report. To be given in Congressional testimony is a farce, as others have pointed out. (Although to be fair, it is probably at the level of Sheila Jackson-Lee's thinking.)

Is this how serious Democrats take immigration? Jokes about corn-packing? No wonder John Conyers did not want him there; I think he saw the huge potential this has for backlash.

I enjoy Colbert's schtick, but is anyone else unsettled by the fact that he's allowed to testify in front of Congress, in character? Doesn't that just seem a bit like a tiny step towards the eventual election of President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho?

We've already had an actor get to be President and stay there for eight years just because he stayed "in character". I don't see why congressional testimony is so out of line.

For that matter many of the politicians listening to the testimony are essentially "in character" as part of their career anyway. That's what they do for a living. They're accustomed to dealing with each other on a daily basis. It's probably the folks they run into who aren't putting on an act that they find unusual.

Or maybe just the ones who are honest about it.

Quick! Bring in a clown to distract from the testimony being given to the Civil Rights Commission!

You're under the impression that Colbert considers that one day the reason for his insight.

What actually happened is that he agreed to do that one day of work to bring publicity to an issue he already cared about. One doesn't need to be a migrant farm worker to listen to migrant farm workers and aid them in their cause. The gentleman running the program was guest on his show, and the bit was meant to aid his program.

He is using his celebrity to bring publicity to an issue, and he is also quite smart, so he's learned something about it.

There is nothing unusual about this.

HAHAHA. I had to look it up to see what the testimony was.

A guy whining about THE NEW BLACK PANTHER PARTY.

Holy crap, that was the biggest joke. Just a couple of drunk guys blown into a scary plot by paranoid racist.

This crap is only going to get worse if the republicans get subpoena power. Remember, the last time republicans had that power with a democratic president they spent 2 weeks of testimony on the names on the Clinton's Christmas Card list.

What vapid nonsense.

Out of curiosity, are we absolutely sure congress didn't just want to have some entertaiment and get a free stand up comedy show brought to them?

:wackylaugh: So that tremendous insight was gained from more than one day? It was gained from deep understanding of the issues, and that was the best way he could communicate the issue to others? :wackylaugh: Like I said, I would expect those kinds of comments from an elementary school student.

What is unusual is that people seem to be confused as to whether he is passionate about this issue, supporting the Democratic Party in Congress, or mocking the absurdity of them asking him to testify. I think even Democrats like John Conyers are confused.

I find your wackylaugh smiley insipid, shallow and slummy and I think it has made a mockery of this mockery thread.

ETA:

I ask you, Mr. Wackylaugh: Have you now, or have you ever been a farm worker?

So, MR. Wackylaugh, if that's even your real name, you don't have anything to say, HMMMM? Just as I thought.

To Augustine: The tagger messed with it. He PM'd me. I didn't really mind. I suck at tags.

ETA:

But, it COULD be a conspiracy....

ETA2:

I would check the tags for rebar.

AH HA! Wackydull! You schmuck! You officious, smelly, legalpunk!

Leave it to Mr. Wackylaugh to hide behind representation.

You can run, but you can't hide, sir. Expect a congressional subpoena shortly!
