Do wheels automatically drop down from a Boeing when they reach a certain altitude or does there need to some landing sequence engaged for that to happen?

Right. And its mass and strength is not affected by its position on the aircraft.

Same with the engines - they were also part of the aircraft but had a greater chance of survival intact due to mass and strength.
