Ashtiani, 42, will be buried up to her chest, according to an Amnesty International report citing the Iranian penal code. The stones that will be hurled at her will be large enough to cause pain but not so large as to kill her immediately
.
Ashtiani, who is from the northern city of Tabriz, was convicted of adultery in 2006.
She was forced to confess after being subjected to 99 lashes, human rights lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei said Thursday in a telephone interview from Tehran.

She later retracted that confession and has denied wrongdoing. Her conviction was based not on evidence but on the determination of three out of five judges, Mostafaei said.

So what? Did you know there's Palestinians without cheese doodles?

You know, I read up on this and was disappointed to note that the media didn't mention that the two men she had supposedly had affairs with, MURDERED her husband. I think that kind of changes things a bit from being a poor victim forced to confess.

I still don't think she should be stoned though. But it's annoying when important details are left out to portray the Middle East as some crazed barbaric country.

The US still has the death penalty and I'm against that as well. But how many Americans would look at this like barbarians, and yet support American death penalty.

Let's see your evidence that she 1) committed adultery and 2) conspired to murder her husband.

Otherwise you can't even make the adultery stick, much less the insinuations you accompany it with.

Yeah because executing murderers is the same as stoning an alleged adulterer whose confession was gained through torture.

"We have grave concerns that the punishment does not fit the alleged crime, " Assistant Secretary of State P.J. Crowley said Thursday. "For a modern society such as Iran, we think this raises significant human rights concerns."

Calling Iran's judicial system "disproportionate" in its treatment of women, Crowley said, "From the United States' standpoint, we don't think putting women to death for adultery is an appropriate punishment."

Grave concerns indeed.

Mr. Crowley, won't you ride my white horse
Mr. Crowley, it's symbolic of course

Come on they have executed under aged women for being raped before, is this really supposed to be surprising? This was also after it was ruled that under aged people could not be executed in Iran.

I'm not condoning this atrocity for a second, but are you completely confident that no condemned person in the USA ever had a confession extorted by some questionable means, or was ever condemned on a poor standard of evidence?

And while this stoning ritual is undoubtedly barbaric in the extreme, I think you'll find many non-Americans hold exactly the same opinion of the electric chair.

It sure isn't standard practice to use torture to gain confessions and use those confessions as evidence.

And of course, people don't get executed for adultery in the USA.

And while this stoning ritual is undoubtedly barbaric in the extreme, I think you'll find many non-Americans hold exactly the same opinion of the electric chair.

I tend to agree that the electric chair shouldn't be used. But its use is extremely rare, I think only a few states still have them. And they are only used if the inmate chooses that method over lethal injection. I would imagine that the electric chair would be pleasant compared to stoning though.

That's probably true, but are you aware that sins of the US legal system are it's recognized failings and in no way indicative of the way the system as a whole runs and, most importantly, in no way justify the way Iranian system is? In short, a red herring.

Some opinions are, quite simply, false. There is nothing more to be said about that. Electric chair is a poorly designed system to deliver a quick and merciful death. It fails to some extent on the second count. On the other hand, stoning is a simple system of delivering maximum agony prior to death. Any comparison between the two is simply retarded.

It would be also worth to mention that electric chair is only used in some states in the US and only as a secondary method so you can't make the comparison you were hinting at at all.

at the end of the day, its the same, e-chair or stoned, you are death, and that is wrong.

The fact that they both result in death is the only only similarity. There is nothing wrong with executing a murderer.

Somalia stoned a 13 year old girl to death after she was raped because she brought it on herself by straying too far away from her village. Saudi Arabia may or may not have executed a "witch" because she made a man impotent after he stepped into her shadow. A 16 year old girl was hung in Iran after she was caught with her boyfriends hand up her dress.

Nothing unique or new about some woman being executed in an Islamic country. I personally don't believe Muslims should be allowed to immigrate into democratic societies simply because of stories like these.

Let me set the record straight about me and Muslims. I don't hate them. I have no problem carrying on a conversation with a Muslim. I do it all the time. Pakistanis, Turks, Iranians, Iraquis etc. I exchange pleasantries with them and I enjoy the conversations. I just don't always feel comfortable being in the presence of a person that comes from this sort of background. I'm leery of them.

I agree with you. Murder with aggravating circumstances causes said murderer to deserve the ultimate price which means he or she has to forfeit their lives to society. If the guilt can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt them he or she deserves to be executed.

There are execution methods and there are execution methods. Going under the needle or being shot by a firing squad or being gullotined is humane. Being stoned to death is not especially for the reason in the OP.

So you're saying that if some young girl wants to escape from such a place, you would rather she stayed there so you would be more comfurtable?

If they want to imigrate to another country, that means they want to try a better life for themselves. Seems to be that allowing more and more people to leave should be the best option around.
