Kim Jong Il Orders Military to Get Ready for Combat

Could mean war is imminent, but it could mean nothing.

I'd wager on nothing. They can't win and they know it. A war would devastate them, and survival of the regime is their foremost concern. The run-up has been all wrong as well, attacking the corvette included. You just don't warn your enemy ahead of time if you can help it.

He's probably trying to turn the world against him, so he can properly secure the succession for his chosen heir (that son of his, Kim Yong Nam, was it?). That would make sense and be perfectly in line with how North Korea behaves.

McHrozni

You mean so that he can unite the people around the concept of 'the brave supernatural Dear Leader defending the DPRK against the imperialist agenda'?

If something starts, who do people think will be doing the heavy lifting to quickly execute long-established plans to obliterate the vast arrays of long range artillery that can reach Seoul from where it is?

We shouldn't discount the fact that SK has its own fleet of cruise missiles. And I don't mean those available from US forces in the region, although no doubt some of those will be available too.

And maybe China might chip in too, if things go seriously tits up.

I suspect that Kim would prefer to see his final months involve combat with his hated enemies, ignoring the long-term consequences that he won't be around to see. Just how healthy is he?

He's got a son who he aparently wants to see in power. In any case his hated enemies are dead or are in reeducation camps.

Whatever happened to the legislation to change what is meant by 'defense only'? Does the JDF have a military option in the game?

Japan has ICBMs (the H-IIA) and as much weapons grade plutonium as it could possibly want.

Really? When did he round up the entire US military-industrial complex, and how did they manage to miss me?

Maybe with any luck traffic won't be so bad on the way home tonight.

I don't know what Kim sees as an 'attack' (Perhaps the dropping of leaflets will be seen as one), but this seems to be code for 'leave us well alone, don't try and change us, don't go ahead with the multi-nation talks'.

Fine, but then he should stop begging for internation aid........

geni, I question your assertion that H-IIA is an ICBM. It is certainly a rocket, but it has not been weaponized, nor is it deployed as such.

In other words, I'd say you are stretching the truth with that assertion.

Could they weaponize it? Very likely, they are technically competent.

Have they? You might want to back up your assertion with evidence that they have done so.

An ICBM is a specific kind of rocket, an InterContinental Ballistic Missile ... not simply a rocket that can get up into outerspace. The term ICBM refers specifically to a class of weapon, not simply a large rocket.

If you can show where H-IIA has been weaponized, I'll accept that Japan has ICBM's.

North Korea has now renouced the non agression pact with the South. This is getting scarier.

With humanitarian aid and rebuilding after? Probably. Militarily? I'd be very surprised.

In case I wasn't quite clear, what I meant was that China - at a pinch - might well help in military 'restraint' of NK i.e blow the friggin' brains out of the NK howitzer emplacements. In order to preserve their access to BMW, Gucci, gold plated bath fittings, Burger King and Ren+Stimpy dvd's. Basically, capitalism is much much more rewarding than marching around in that weird bouncy style of the North Koreans. The Chinese learned this, eventually, although they're keeping it to themselves for the moment.

I'm not sure those really qualify as hated enemies. Remeber kim actualy knows how the game is played. From his point of view an enermy that can't really get at him and doesn't really impact the internal north korean political game is unlikely to be viewed as a significant problem.

I'm pretty sure it would be unconstitutional for japan to weaponise H-IIA. Equaly it seems unlikely that japan's level of spending on it's space program is really justifiable in any other context.

IMHO, all it means is that the leadership is worried that when enough North Koreans have had enough of slowly, and sometimes rapidly, starving to death, they could spontaneously overthrow the regime. A tactic straight out of 1984 is being used to get them back into line.

I fully expect a "hot" war within the week now. This thing is going to be very, very bad.

really? within 7 days?

that's quite a prediction. I think you are most likely wrong.

I think, if there is a war, it will be start with US/SK naval exercises that are attacked by NK. that could lead to a US/SK retaliation.

and then a snowball effect from there. but I don't expect a massive war just to start just like that.

.........i hope.
