Australia

Perhaps it's worth reminding people that this thread is about the history of Australia. FWIW.

ETA. Getting back on topic...

Last November I was in Katoomba and while there, was inspired by the ancient scenery of the Blue Mountains and the Jamison Valley. I reflected on what it must have been like for earlier explorers, in particular William Wentworth, Gregory Blaxland and William Lawson who were the first Europeans to cross the Blue Mountains in 1813, thus opening up the interior of NSW for grazing. It must have been quite overwhelming for those early settlers as they built their roads and their towns, to be surrounded by such eternal geography. I penned a poem, in response to my thoughts, and thought I'd share it, as tribute to those early settlers and explorers:

The blue haze drifts away behind
The wide sky’s endless aching dome,
And shattered ranks of rock define
The path where silent rivers roam.
Time’s weight lies heavy on the scene;
The dusty grind of age is shown
Through blanket folds of softer green
That in ancient clefts have grown.
Man’s touch is soft upon the land;
As fragile as the autumn snow
The newly founded infant houses stand
Gathered clinging to a lonely road
That winds its careful way close by
Blue mountains marching to the sky.

Correct, and aboriginal culture is part of such history.

If it was some sort of reasonable discussion, perhaps. However, you blokes are just feeding a troll. That goes on all over this forum, but it's not in the spirit of this thread.

Moderators, may we have a split thread, please?

I agree. But current Australian ecological measures aren't. :) Nor is the current state of assistance to Aboriginal communities.

(I wasn't trying to imply nothing being discussed was relevant to the OP)

So this is just a "Go Aussie!" wankfest? Aight. I gave up on this thread after getting a warning for playing the man and not the ball, and had half a dozen posts removed, when it's apparently OK for Alfie to call me "self hating socialist bile". Seems that guy gets away with quite a lot on this forum, if the science forum is anything to go by. Whatever. Bogan Aussie Pride is for flogs, I'll leave you guys to it :)

MELBOURNE City Council sent the cleaners into Hosier Lane on Thursday to tidy up the rat-infested garbage, but they caught the wrong rat.

A request by deputy lord mayor Susan Riley to clean up the laneway, world famous for its colourful street art, inadvertently resulted in the painting over of a stencil of a rat by the celebrated British graffiti artist Banksy.

Banksy would be laughing indeed.

Relatively not far but imagine you were just setting out from here current position – there's still more than 1,000 km of serious sailing left to go. I wasn't sure it was a good idea when she started out but she has proved up to the challenge and good on her.

Yes, I didn't follow the thread about her because I thought it would be a train wreck, but she's proved me wrong. Good on her, indeed!

LOL.

And WTF is a flog?

I have no idea.

But it reminds me of a saying my Dad had. During a drought, he said:

"The paddock is so dry you could flog a flea across it."

That had me in stitches. :)

LOL.

That's a word that seems to have become popular since I left around 10 years ago. Its used heavily on the Bigfooty AFL discussion forums to mean “loser” or “fool”. Perhaps its related to the way Aussies describe a team being "flogged" to mean comprehensively defeated.

Not quite. A reference to a masturbator I believe.

OK boys and girls, that's it. Have fun with your thread.

I'm done here.

Congratulations.

Please come back, dear Akhenaten. :(

This thread is amazing, thanks in a massive part to you.

Don't let a whinger spoil it for you. I found his claims pathetic, but the responses were mostly enlightening and educational, and in the spirit of your thread.

Come back, we need you and miss you. :hug5
