What is your excuse for killing animals?

I just looked at the Language Award thread... I think three different nihilist manifestos just got nominated by the other nihilists. I suppose uncertainty breeds the desire to affirm and to find affirmation.

What have you got against affirmation?

I do find it interesting observing the behaviour of those who endorse moral nihilism. There's at the very least a prima facie contradiction between thinking that all talk of morality is a complete load of cobblers, and actually telling anyone that you think this. After all, if there is no moral imperative to either be honest or to spread the word of moral nihilism, why not just lie and pretend to be moral until you can get away with something, like embezzling a million dollars or murdering someone?

One possibility is that they enjoy articulating the moral nihilist position so much that they do so even though it cannot be in their own best interests to out themselves as moral nihilists. Another is that they pay lip service to moral nihilism but do not live by their claimed moral philosophy, and so they are honest about their views and otherwise act in moral ways despite their lip service. We need a term for these people - Pseudo-nihilists perhaps?

With that load of bricks coming down I'm glad I'm not a "moral nihilist".

That's a part of the vegan argument I don't get.

Because we FEEL bad for SOME of the animals we slaughter, we should skip meat entirely (which is a non sequitur; we should improve conditions in slaughterhouses, instead). But then, this causes certain deficiencies. The solution ? Pills.

Sure thing. No, I think I'll keep getting my essential nutrients the old fashion way, thank you very much.

And to the OP, really, I have no need for justification.

Looks like KL is making the can/should fallacy, it's the same as the is/ought that he likes so much.

The argument is that the production of meat is morally questionable - not the eating of it.

Could you try to keep consistent on what it is that is morally questionable? Thanks.

Apparently from this statement:

"Mind you, the world would be a better place if everyone had the same values I did. That's tautologically true. If I didn't think so, I wouldn't hold those values."

anything KL disagrees with is immoral.

Wow, what a long thread about nothing.

It is utterly impossible to survive on this planet without killing animals.

You say you are a vegan? How did you manage that without tilling the soil?

Because you till the soil and you kill worms and moles and snakes and anything else your spade or plow cuts through. You eat just natural fruits and nuts? What about the worms that depend on those things to grow and mature? Do you somehow identify the wormy ones and leave them on the tree? What do you do with the maggot when you cut open and apple and find one in there?

Do you breathe? You have absolutely inhaled and killed small insects.

Do you bathe? Or wash your bedding? You have drowned entire dust mite civilizations.

Do you drive a car? What are all those splatters on the windshield?

I hate to tell you how many cute baby bunnies I have killed while running a mowing machine over a field prior to plowing.

You immoral BASTARD! If hope you ate them.

That's what the dogs were for. They'd follow that sickle blade and pounce on whatever moved.

Thread so far:

OP: what is your excuse for killing animals?

Others: why do we need an excuse?

OP et al: Why do you want to rape and murder and pillage?

Others: Wait a minute all I want to do is eat this steak

OP et al: Naturalistic fallacy, inconsistent, and why do you want to rape, pillage and murder?

Others: Look I'm getting tired of being accused of crimes

OP et al: See how the meat-eaters call names are morally nihilistic, engage in ad homs and want to rape, murder and pillage.

Others: (line redacted due to MA)

Moral Animal-stapo?

But that's where I'm stumped. If it didn't have a certain effect on the pet, it wouldn't be considered inflicting pain and suffering, and therefore wouldn't be prohibited for that reason. So it still goes back to what effect it has on the animal.

If the pet is terminally ill but sedated so that it can't feel pain, would skinning it be wrong? Under your scheme, no. Under Michael's scheme, yes.

Nooooo, what are you talking about? THAT would be immoral. The moral thing to do is make a nice little tomb for the animal, say some nice words (make sure you mean it) and then walk away decently.

(If you happen to step over some bugs while doing this walk-away, don't worry. It's acceptable. At least under my Moral Code, but then again my Moral Code has a bigger **** than the other guys')

Cain, Volatile and you are also entitled to nominate each other as many times as you want, if that's what bothers you (In fact, Volatile nominated Cain. But of course, you take issue with the ones that oppose your position having nominated others). Heck, you can even Nominate yourself. Seems like you're the only one taking the whole "Nomination Award" to the heart.

I guess when you have nothing left to say, complain about The Language Awards.

You know I never did see a moral law derived by philosophy but I thought it rude to keep asking.:D

I have no idea why I didn't think of that one first.

Also, rats are often intentionally killed to keep them out of the grain storage. Shall I mention dead crows in cornfields? :D

My will is the only justification for my actions required. I do what I want.

That said, animals don't have the same capacity for suffering that humans do, thus the golden rule does not apply.

Great name for a band.
