Limbaugh gets sick of Beck getting all the attention, so...

In making his statement that "I’m looking around. The earth hadn’t opened up. There’s no Armageddon out there. The birds are still chirping." he implied that if the bill was bad then something bad should have happened instantly even though nothing in the bill had actually been implemented.

Or it could have been a literal statement to address/mock the fears of ignorant people.

You know, people who believe stupid things like God making volcanoes erupt because he doesn't like Obamacare.

The clear implication was that the bill must not be bad since the results of nothing being implemented was nothing bad happening as a result.

But don't let any critical thinking interfere with seeing every word uttered by Obama as the absolute truth.

I took his message as to say that all of these absurdly bad things the GOP and Tea Party was forboding hasn't happen, nor will it happen. There will be no death panels, there will be no rationing, no one is coming to take gramma to the "special" showers.

By show of hands: how many of you believe this is a serious statement?

A group of Christan bikers at the Arlen Ness show I went to today thought it was.

They seemed miffed when I asked why he would take it out on Iceland...

Many of the people who believed before he signed the bill that those things would happen will realize his message is meaningless and that his signature alone will not cause them to happen. People who don't believe those things will happen don't need the message.

So who was he talking to?

Yeah, about that critical thinking stuff...
Anyone know when Obama actually said that? Because a Google search on those words only seems to be giving me people quoting Limbaugh supposedly quoting Obama.

Huh? Can you restate this so that it makes sense?

I'm with DR on this. I don't care for Rush and think he is often ridiculous and hateful and spiteful and all those things he is criticized for, but he also engages in his own brand of humor and fun-poking. Whether you think it succeeds or not, is in good taste or not, or is well aimed or not, it is incorrect to castigate him for what seems obvious to me is another one of his humorous bits.

Could be wrong, but I don't think I'll douse him in boiling oil over it.

I concur with most this. He has his own brand of sarcasm and while his politics are so far from mine as to be invisible over the horizon, I think it actually works a lot of the time. He's a pretty good speaker, too, and the written word doesn't quite convey sarcasm as well as hearing it does.

OTOH, could you douse him in boiling oil, anyway?

Of course he was not serious. Tongue in check and sarcasm are lost on zealots who just want to bash anything and everything he says.

Does it bother you that it's tough to tell which of the leaders in your political spectrum are serious about God using natural disasters to punish politics and which just use it as humorous metaphor about how bad providing health care is?

It's not tough to tell. So it doesn't bother me. It seems to bother you. Maybe because it's tough for you to tell.

Well, apparently they're not lost on all - e.g. if you see the two posts previous to yours.

And as Quixotecoyote points out, when so many on the god-fearing right Poe themselves in every second column or broadcast, it's actually difficult to tell when they're trying for humor or not.

I've listend to Rush enough to believe that he was attempting a funny, here. But I'll be willing to bet that if anyone on the fundy right picks it up and criticizes him for satirizing believers, he'll back-pedal faster than an Indy car to make sure he doesn't cross them up. He can walk the line very easily when he wants to, but he ain't messing with his own power base.

God is a bastid.

He lets a volcano erupt that is messing with europe just to show to the US people that theyr presidents Healthcare sux. doesnt god know about the Yellowstone volcano?

God hate Euros?

What, you think the man has some sort of integrity or credibility? The man called a 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton the "White House dog" and later claimed it was a mistake.

He's a shock-jock who pretends to be a political commentator but without the honesty or cojones to accept the concequenses. Of course he was "serious", as serious as he can be. He'll push as far as he can until he gets a little flack and then he'll melt away like a tub o' butter in the hot sun.

How can you say that about Americas leading republican? Look at how many times he pulled Steele to heel after all.

Important to remember that Limbaugh's TV show was pre-recorded so even if there were a mistake it could have been edited out had Limbaugh wanted to. Alas, the "mistake" made it to air.

Are you sure this wasn't a radio broadcast? I was under the impression that he'd stopped doing a TV show. Haven't been keeping up, so maybe he's back on the air in all of his "a face made for radio" glory.

@uppie: your response tells me a great deal about you.

Why don't you go back and read my question, which that response wasn't a reply to, but looks more like choosing to wander off into a mini-rant.

You've been trolled, again, and are doing just what I think Rush wants you to do: foam at the mouth.

Yes, it was during one of his at least two attempts at moving to TV.

Since you are making judgements without being informed, let me inform you. The schtick went like this:

Limbaugh: Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat. Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is a White House dog?

At which point, he shows a picture of then 13 year-old Chelsea Clinton.

Hell of a guy, that Limbaugh.

@uppie: your response tells me a great deal about you.
Does it? It is amazing you can have such insight to me when you have so little into Limbaugh's rather notorious and public past. That, or you were unaware that one can't show pictures over the radio.

Now that you mention it. Your response tells me a great deal about you, too. Maybe you should consider examine your own assumptions before being so sanctimonious.

Why don't you go back and read my question, which that response wasn't a reply to, but looks more like choosing to wander off into a mini-rant.
Oh, I read your question. You asked if he anyone thought this was a serious statement (and, presumably, not just a joke). The assumption on your part is that the Limbaugh 'show persona' is a reasonable person.

Why don't you go back and actually read my response instead of going off on me? Or are people not allowed to point out things you hadn't considered without being instantly dismissed as 'ranting'?

You've been trolled, again, and are doing just what I think Rush wants you to do: foam at the mouth.
And yet, you were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he was simply joking and, I note, leaping to his defense.
