Unless you can come up with another reason to celebrate the losing side of a war in which one side seceded from the Union to protect owning other people.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/07/AR2010040704411.html

Isn't it painfully obvious that this is a political winner among the Teabaggers? The real question is why? Why would the far right approve of such a policy? Why would going backwards appear to them as progress? Why would doing this somehow propel this douchebag's career and make him some sort of Teabagging hero?

Ah, but cue the apologists. After all, there is nothing too vile, no break in the social compact, that Teabaggers will not excuse, minimize, or defend.

Yeah, it's disgusting.

The good thing is that he's already had to apologize for leaving out any mention of slavery, and amend his statement.

From Joel Achenbach (Written prior to the governor's backpedaling).

Bob McDonnell's decision to commemorate what he might as well have called the War of Northern Aggression is a reminder that we're still fighting the Civil War 150 years later. We're coming up on the sesquicentennial of the firing on Fort Sumter, and we'll be having some version of this conversation, I bet, for much of the next five years. Why, exactly, did the country get ripped apart? It's a complex issue, but the short answer, the obvious answer, and the unavoidable answer -- unless you're the governor of Virginia -- is slavery. You just can't get around it.

The Republican Party was the anti-slavery party in the 1860 election, and Lincoln's election triggered a secessionist wave in the South [the South Carolina secession declaration will erase any doubt about slavery's central role in all this] that eventually swept up Virginia. Slavery and its perpetuation were always at the center of the schism. There was a great deal of effort by northern leaders during the war to maintain that it wasn't fundamentally a conflict over slavery -- because the North needed the allegiance of the border states. But in 1865, Lincoln acknowledged the obvious in his second inaugural address.

Basically, I think that the political result will be a self-inflicted wound for the governor.

It doesn't look good when you have to apologize and backpedal.

"April is the month in which the people of Virginia joined the Confederate States of America in a four year war between the states for independence"

are we like the only country that allows states or districts to officially celebrate, using tax-dollars, previous attempts at rebellion and secession????

when are the **** ing southerners gonna let this **** go?????

New York City used to be Dutch, should we now have "Brave Dutch fought against the evil British Memorial Week" in Manhattan???

boy this governor is a dick.

again, Southerners...please let this **** go already!!!

There is a large segment of the population in the Southern US that will never "let this go". I know of at least three houses within a mile or two of mine that have confederate flags flying over them. Confederate flag stickers and tags are on a lot of vehicles around here, as well as "Keep It Flying", "Heritage Not Hate" etc. stickers. This is also a town with a major university where Kappa Alpha fraternity members dress in cofederate army uniforms and parade around campus.

If the SCV is his "core supporters," chances are he doesn't have much of a political career left anyway.

when I was younger, I thought the Confederate flag was cool. now I see it for what it truly is, a symbol of treason and racism.

I think the Rude Pundit put it best.
thinks that if the Governor of Virginia can declare April "Confederate History Month," up north we can call it, "'We Kicked Your ***, Crackers' Month."
