There are some clues in the SDK indicating that this might be supported in the OS - perhaps in a future version, though, as there was no mention of it in the announcement.

Much of the backlash, I believe, from those that were following the rumors for the past decade with froth and vigor is due to this, though. Many of us expected a netbook with OS X and a touch interface, not a glorified iPod with limitations and locked down app stores, etc.

Lifehacker.com had a good article weighing in on both good and bad points of the iPad. I can't find it at the moment, though.

This.

The iPad would have been better (and I don't believe it's complete ass as it is) as a scaled down MacBook rather than a scaled up iPod Touch.

No, I don't think so. The problem with OSX, and Windows has the same problem, is that the OS interface is not designed to be touch-centric. Both OSX and Windows grew up with a mouse centric design. Apple correctly designed a touch interface with the iPhone OS. The problem is that they needed to beef up that OS to make it more netbook-like. They should have first completed the iPhone 4 software, made sure it was up to the task, then released this.

Honestly, this is atypical of Apple. I am in no way an Apple fanatic, and own only one apple device, an iPod Nano that was given to me as a gift. But, Apple doesn't ususally rush to market. Even the first gen iPhone, while lacking in some areas, was a step above the other smartphones out there. They made sure the AppStore infrastructure was complete.

To me, the iPad is unfinished, more so than any other Apple product. If there is any product shouting "Wait for the next iteration!" it's the iPad.

How hard would a grafting a touch based interface onto a real OS?
 
What I like:
9.7 inch screen.
(I can finally put away the magnifying glass to watch videos like I have to with the itouch.)

Quick (relativly) boot-up and easy handeling.
(no "lift, twist and fold" that i have to do with my HP tablet PC)

No scalding hands
(like I get with my HP tablet blowing unconfortably hot air onto my hands or the hot backlight tranformer onthe screen edge)

What I don't like:
still no flash

no video/still camera

the inevitable "man purse" that you are going to need to convieniently carry the ipad around with

If apple would put flash and a camera on the ipad I would buy it this second (or April, which ever omes first)

Untill then i might be tempted to put my bucks into the the HP Slate:

flash, a web cam, choice of windows7 or Android. Ehh, not the slick, itouch-on-steroids styling that the ipad has, but we'll see what charms it has to offer.

Then there's Dell's tablet/slate/ipad offering in the not too distant future.

For you. It would have been better for you. This is the thing that is really bugging me about the iPad backlash. Whether it's intentional or simply an oversight, people are coming across as if their personal needs and wants are universal. It's as if they're ignoring (or perhaps refusing to acknowledge) that there are different types of people in the world and not everybody requires the same things.

Please don't take this as an attack against you personally. I recognize that you may very well have meant this as a personal opinion. This is more a statement about the anti-iPad crowd in general.
 
I think this marks an interesting change in electronics. No longer will it be about making things smaller with more features. The future is BIG.

I'm not so much anti-iPad as I am now seeing something that was rumored to be one thing for almost a decade be released as something I just don't need and isn't what I was hoping for. I don't think I am alone in this opinion, either, but it's not of consequence. Jobs will do what Jobs will due and drag the die hard Mac base along with kicking and screaming. The rest will be marketing and what Apple does best (more marketing.)

It's wholly a personal opinion, but then I've been drifting away from Apple for some time now that Rosegarden and Ardour are coming into their own and multimedia production apps in linux are gaining in functionality.

The iPad won't be the thing they need, but something with an open, administer-able operating system will be perfect. It would have no problems passing HIPAA, you build that in to the app. That’s what the current vendors have done on the iPhone app, which are all HIPAA compliant. They would just need to scale up their apps to take better use of the screen. You will be seeing doctors in hospitals using these devices by the end of the year.

Actually, for me is not what I meant at all. I have no need nor desire for the iPad nor any comparable device. I meant, simply, that it would have more fulfilled the created expectations, and received less of the backlash you so hate, had it been done that way.

The fact that the backlash is so large should indicate that a lot of people fit the "not right for you" mold. My point is that Apple could have created a device with a much larger "right for you" crowd than the one they did.

Touch support is not the same as touch centric. OSX (and Windows) are mouse centric. Areas of the window frame, some scrolling areas, etc. are designed to be accessed with a pointing device, which is more accurate than a finger. Selecting an object requires a mouse click. Yes a tap on the screen is intrepretated as a mouse click, but that is not how the OS UI is designed. Multi-select is more difficult, although not impossible.

This is in no way a slight on the two OSes, they just weren't designed that way. This is why Apple developed the iPhone OS. It is designed from the ground up understanding that the primary input device will be a fat finger on a relatively small interface zone. If you have had the opportunity to use the ZuneHD interface, it, too, has been designed to interface with a fat finger on a small input area.

Now, to question of "how hard is it to put that interface on OSX/Windows?" I believe that it is more difficult than you think. Both OSX and Windows have so many deep elements that were never envisioned to host a non-mousse style pointer. Each of these areas would need to be revamped, causing possible regression errors. A specialized version of the OS (ala iPhone OS to OSX) is probably required. The new OS should be more robust than the iPhone OS and have the capability of running standard apps. However, these apps may not be touch centric, so an alternative input device (stylus of some sort) needs to be supported.

Then maybe Apple ought to turn-down the marketing retoric from 11 to reasonable. Sorry, but the reactioons from the anti-iPad crowd are in direct proportion to the amount of ******** that Apple heaps on in the marketing side of things.

If you read the caption below the video it says that the touch screen computer in the video is a Dell laptop running OSX

From the web site:
